Week 5 Preview: vs Auburn (1-1, 0-0)

Synopsis
SMU returns home after a trip out to North Carolina looking to continue their undefeated streak against future SEC foe, Auburn. The Tigers have already gone through both of their Bye Weeks and are starting their gauntlet of a schedule with 10 straight weeks of games. Clearly the scheduler had it out for the Tigers, starting their run against the defending champions and the number one team in the nation.

The Tigers opened their season with a narrow loss in Week 1 against the then-ranked Pittsburgh Panthers, losing 30-27 before rebounding in a strong victory against North Texas at home. The team hopes their defense shows up after allowing 29 points on average in their first two games, with their best opportunity coming against an SMU offense looking to figure out how to get their explosiveness going.

Notably, this is former SMU standout defensive tackle Trent Landry's first game back at SMU after spending his first two seasons with the Mustangs. Landry hopped into the transfer portal after not agreeing with the regime being built by head coach Nico Augustine, citing former defensive coordinator Kerry Abraham as "the only reason he was there in the first place". Augustine has been quiet about any controversy, citing that Landry has "every right to ask out, and that the team won't be signalling him out whatsoever."

SMU enters as the heavy favorite, with their offense and smothering defense seen to be too much for the Tigers who are still trying to get their gears going on offense.

Lonzo tames Tigers, 4 touchdown fourth quarter nearly shocks #1 SMU

‣ It was only a matter of time that five-star wide receiver Kenyon Natson ripped off a long run for his first career touchdown.

Score

FINAL 1 2 3 4 T
#1 SMU 7 14 14 7 42
Auburn 3 6 0 21 30

Game Summary

For three quarters, number one SMU looked untouchable. For the fourth, Auburn made it uncomfortable. After the final whistle, things got a little personal.

The Mustangs build a commanding lead behind Alonzo Cheeseman's four touchdown passes and held on for a 42-30 win over Auburn in a game that was as much about star power as it was about late tension. SMU now moves to 5-0 and continue to be undefeated.

Cheeseman delivered another Heisman-caliber performance, throwing four touchdowns and 281 passing yardsd through three quarters of play, three of the touchdowns going to Mackey Award winning tight end Dwayne Kasay, who tormented Auburn's linebackers and safeties up the seam all night.

Kasay's ability to find soft spots in coverage turned red-zone trips into automatic points and helped SMU race ahead early.

The backups, led by freshman quarterback Lee Mayweather, mixed in explosive plays elsewhere, including a 46-yard touchdown to true freshman wide receiver Kenyon Natson, the first score of his collegiate career 0- a flash of the big-play ability that made him one of the most coveted recruits in the country.

SMU's defense controlled the game through three quarters, generating pressure and forcing Auburn into long-yardage situations. But once the starters were pulled in the fourth, Auburn's offense erupted. Quarterback Randy Hape piled up 468 passing yards, repeatedly connect with Tory Paymah, who finished with 10 catches for 239 receiving yards and two scores, including a stunning 96-yard catch-and-run that cut into the margin and energized the Tigers' sideline.

The most talked-about moment came after the clock hit zero. SMU head coach Nico Augustine attempted to shake hands with former Mustangs defensive tackle Trent Landry, now at Auburn after transferring in the offseason. Landry brushed past Augustine and appeared to lash out verbally, creating a brief but heated scene that required staff intervention.

The exchange adds another layer to an already emotional storyline surrounding Landry's departure and Auburn's pursuit of SMU's championship core.

Didn't think the drop-off from my starters to my backup was that drastic, but here we are :drose:
