Top-10 Tested: Hawaiʻi Prevails in Overtime Battle With Stanford

Honolulu, HI -- No. 9 Hawaiʻi found itself on the ropes Saturday night, trading haymakers with Stanford in a game that stretched deep into overtime before the Rainbow Warriors delivered the final blow in a 34-28 thriller.

In a contest that featured three lead changes in the fourth quarter and a dramatic overtime finish, Hawaiʻi (10-1) leaned on quarterback Dermaricus Davis to outlast a resilient Stanford (5-6) squad at Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex.

A 6-yard scramble by Davis put the game's first points on the board in the first quarter. Stanford kicker Brian Hicks drilled field goals from 30 and 40 yards, then quarterback Cole Dunn connected with Vandrevuis Jacobs for a 75-yard touchdown strike. A successful two-point conversion pushed the Cardinal lead to 14-7 and quieted the home crowd.

But the Rainbow Warriors responded in the fourth quarter behind Davis, who threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Damon Brazill, tying the game at 14 with 11:57 remaining.

Stanford reclaimed the lead midway through the quarter on a 37-yard touchdown pass from Dunn to Marcus Brown. With time slipping away, Hawaiʻi turned to its ground game. Glen Wayne powered in from 2 yards out with 40 seconds left, knotting the score at 21 and forcing overtime.

In the extra period, both offenses continued to execute under pressure. Davis found Jackson Harris for a 7-yard touchdown to give Hawaiʻi the first punch. Stanford answered right back with a 25-yard touchdown pass from Dunn to Brown, keeping the score tied at 28.

Then came the decisive moment.

Facing pressure in the second overtime possession, Stanford had to settle for a field goal, but their 33-yard attempt would miss wide left.

With a chance to seal the win, Davis lofted a beautiful 25-yard dot to Terry Wake, walking into the end zone untouched, igniting the Hawaiʻi sideline and sending the home crowd into celebration as the Rainbow Warriors sealed the 34-28 win.

Davis accounted for three touchdown passes and a rushing score, delivering in the biggest moments as Hawaiʻi preserved its top-10 standing and strengthened its postseason résumé.

For Stanford, Dunn threw for multiple scores, including two connections with Brown, but the Cardinal were unable to get a stop in overtime.

In a game defined by resilience and late-game execution, Hawaiʻi once again proved why it belongs among the nation’s elite — surviving a scare and finishing when it mattered most.
