BOMBS OVER ORLANDO
USF puts up 62 behind Hewlett's historic performance

Saturday August 25, 2029 | 3:30 PM | Acrisure Bounce House | Orlando, Florida

Orlando, Florida - If there were any questions about what this version of South Florida could be in 2029, Locklan Hewlett answered all of them, emphatically, in just one afternoon.

Hewlett delivered a record-setting performance, throwing for 504 yards and eight touchdowns as USF overwhelmed UCF 62–17 in a season-opening statement in the War on I-4. From the moment the Bulls found their rhythm late in the first quarter, the game quickly turned into a showcase of one of the most explosive passing attacks in the country.

Hewlett's yardage and touchdown numbers each set not only school records but American Conference records as well.

After falling behind 7–0 early on a John Minter touchdown run, USF responded with precision and pace. Hewlett connected with Lamar Sweet on a 41-yard strike to tie the game, then hit him again just before the end of the quarter to give the Bulls a lead they would never relinquish.

From there, the onslaught began.

Hewlett spread the ball effortlessly across a deep receiving corps, carving up UCF’s defense at every level. Touchdowns to Lyle Dragos and Gerald Camarda in the second quarter stretched the lead, and by halftime, USF had firmly seized control despite a late UCF field goal.

The third quarter removed any remaining doubt.

Hewlett opened the half with a 60-yard touchdown to Sweet, his third of the day, before adding scoring passes to Steven Snead and Josh Barr. By the time the fourth quarter arrived, the Bulls had turned a rivalry game into a rout, adding another touchdown through Dalton Sahara and two field goals from Dom Bragg to cap a 62-point performance.

Hewlett’s final line, 35-of-56 for 504 yards, eight touchdowns, and no interceptions, underscored just how dominant the performance was. He averaged 9.0 yards per attempt and commanded the offense with complete control, consistently identifying mismatches and delivering accurate throws downfield.

His connection with Sweet proved especially lethal. The senior receiver hauled in nine catches for 202 yards and three touchdowns, repeatedly beating coverage and turning short gains into explosive plays. Camarda added 109 yards, while Snead, Dragos, and Sahara each found the end zone as part of a balanced aerial attack that produced 550 passing yards.

While the passing game stole the spotlight, the ground attack showed flashes early before becoming less of a focal point. Connor Suggs opened the game effectively, averaging 6.7 yards per carry on 10 attempts, but appeared limited after a few early touches and was used sparingly as the game progressed. With the Bulls quickly gaining control the coaching staff elected to rest Suggs, using the rest of the RB depth chart the rest of the way.

Defensively, USF complemented the offensive explosion with timely stops and steady pressure. Armon Chambers led the way with nine tackles and a sack, while the unit held UCF to just 4.9 yards per play and forced a key interception by Matt Ansah. The Knights struggled to sustain drives, converting just 2-of-14 on third down.

UCF found modest success on the ground behind Minter, who scored twice, but the passing game never found traction. UCF QB Will Wilson, who appeared on the preseason Heisman watch list, threw for 206 yards but failed to produce a touchdown, and the Knights were unable to keep pace once the game tilted in USF’s favor.

By the final whistle, the numbers painted a picture of complete dominance. USF outgained UCF 677 to 391 in total offense and piled up 31 first downs, controlling both tempo and explosiveness throughout the afternoon.

More importantly, the performance sent a message.

In a rivalry game on the road, against a familiar opponent, South Florida didn’t just win, it overwhelmed. And behind Locklan Hewlett’s historic outing, the Bulls may have revealed the ceiling of an offense capable of reshaping expectations for the entire season.

USF POSTGAME REPORT
USF 62 – UCF 17
Image

Offense
–USF opened the 2029 season in dominant fashion, overwhelming UCF 62–17 in Orlando behind one of the most explosive passing performances in program history.
–Quarterback Locklan Hewlett was sensational, carving up the Knights’ defense for 504 yards and eight touchdowns while completing 35 of 56 passes without an interception. Hewlett showed complete command of the offense, attacking all levels of the field and spreading the ball to multiple playmakers.
–Lamar Sweet led the charge with nine receptions for 202 yards and three touchdowns, including scoring grabs of 41, 3, and 60 yards as he repeatedly burned UCF’s secondary.
–Gerald Camarda (109 yards, TD) and Steven Snead (71 yards, TD) added to the aerial assault, while five different receivers found the end zone in a balanced and relentless attack.
–USF piled up 677 yards of total offense and averaged 7.4 yards per play, consistently winning on early downs and sustaining drives with timely execution.
–The ground game showed flashes, but Connor Suggs appeared limited after a few early carries, finishing with 67 yards on 10 attempts as USF leaned heavily on Hewlett’s arm the rest of the way.
–“Locklan was in complete control today,” Head Coach DJ Porter said. “When he’s seeing it like that, we’re tough to stop.

Defense
–USF’s defense delivered a strong complementary performance, holding UCF to 17 points and just 4.9 yards per play while forcing the Knights into inefficient drives throughout the game.
–The Bulls limited UCF to just 2-of-14 on third downs (14%), consistently winning on key downs and preventing any sustained momentum.
–Linebacker Armon Chambers led the unit with nine tackles and a sack, while Ralph Livings and Jamerson Harris added pressure up front.
–Matt Ansah recorded an interception, helping USF win the turnover battle and maintain control after building an early lead.
–Although UCF found some success on the ground with John Minter (two touchdowns), the Bulls tightened up in the red zone and shut out the Knights in the fourth quarter.

Special Teams
–Kicker Dom Bragg was flawless, converting all eight extra points and knocking through two field goals, including a long of 43 yards.
–Punter Dorian McSurdy averaged 55.0 yards on two punts, flipping field position when called upon.
–USF’s return game provided a spark as well, with 58 punt return yards and 61 kick return yards contributing to strong field position throughout the game.

Quotables
That’s about as well as you can throw it. He trusted his reads and let it rip.” – DJ Porter
We were just taking what they gave us. Once we got into rhythm, everything slowed down.” – Locklan Hewlett
We knew if we got stops on third down, we’d take control of the game.” – Armon Chambers
Everybody ate today. That’s what makes us dangerous.” – Lamar Sweet

News
–The NCAA reportedly reviewed one of Lamar Sweet's celebrations during which a UCF fan was struck with the ball after the play. It was determined that the ball slipped out of Sweet's hand on a spike attempt and no harm was meant. The NCAA was especially concerned due to negotiations between UCF and Sweet turning sour earlier this year when it was revealed that someone on the UCF coaching staff made derogatory remarks about Sweet and the NIL number he and his representatives were seeking. Sweet and USF did not comment on the situation.
–Locklan Hewlett’s eight-touchdown performance sets an early tone in the American Conference Player of the Week race.
–The Bulls’ offense totaled 796 yards, signaling one of the most explosive units in the country to start the season.

Injury Notes
-While USF dominated UCF they received tough news after the game. Cornerback David Igbinoghene, listed as CB1 on the team's depth chart, suffered a Torn Pectoral and will miss the remainder of the season. He is expected to request a medical redshirt.
-Freshman CB Ja'Quan Bean, who played more than expected due to Igbinoghene's injury, also left the game early with a foot fracture. He is expected to miss a few weeks.
–Connor Suggs appeared limited after early carries, though he remained active and finished the game. No other injuries were reported.

Next Up
–USF heads to Miami to face FIU next Saturday.

That wasn’t the game plan but when Suggs disappeared we kept slinging. Also doing a lot more no huddle and getting more snaps. We do plan to #rtdb especially with the talent we have in the backfield
