NO CLAWS
USF tops 60 for second straight week in rout of FIU

Saturday September 1, 2029 | 7:00 PM | Pitbull Stadium | Miami, Florida

Miami, Florida - For the second straight week, South Florida’s offense showed no signs of slowing down.

Behind another efficient performance from quarterback Locklan Hewlett and a dominant rushing effort from Connor Suggs, No. 17 USF rolled past FIU 63–16 Saturday night at Pitbull Stadium, eclipsing the 60-point mark for the second consecutive game.

The Bulls finished with 720 total yards and 32 first downs while averaging 7.7 yards per play in a performance that overwhelmed the Panthers in every phase.

FIU struck first with a 46-yard field goal from Manny Blacknall midway through the opening quarter, but the early lead didn’t last long. Connor Suggs powered in from one yard out to put USF ahead, beginning a night where the Bulls’ ground game consistently wore down the Panthers’ defense.

Suggs delivered the game’s biggest early momentum swing in the second quarter, bursting through the line and racing 81 yards down the sideline for a touchdown. The explosive run pushed the Bulls firmly in control and highlighted a massive night for the junior back, who finished with 149 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries.

“Connor was outstanding tonight,” head coach DJ Porter said afterward. “When he gets into space like that, he can change a game in a hurry.”

While the running game punished FIU between the tackles, Hewlett continued his strong start to the season through the air. The Bulls’ quarterback completed 26 of 37 passes for 351 yards and four touchdowns without an interception, repeatedly finding mismatches downfield against the Panthers’ secondary.

Gerald Camarda proved to be Hewlett’s most dangerous target. The receiver hauled in three touchdown passes, including a 44-yard strike in the second quarter and another long score early in the fourth that effectively put the game out of reach.

Lamar Sweet also turned in a big performance, catching 10 passes for 148 yards and a touchdown, including a 48-yard scoring grab early in the third quarter that extended USF’s lead.

By the fourth quarter, the Bulls were firmly in command. George Shembo added a short touchdown run, Steven Snead caught a 14-yard scoring pass from Hewlett, and backup quarterback Joshua Brantley capped the night by tossing a four-yard touchdown to Camarda late in the game.

USF’s defense matched the offense’s intensity, forcing three interceptions and holding the Panthers to just 253 yards of offense. Tracy Bennett and Matt Ansah each picked off passes, while Nick Jones added a third interception as FIU struggled to generate consistent drives.

Linebacker Armon Chambers led the Bulls with eight tackles and a sack, while Ralph Livings added another sack and two tackles for loss as USF’s front disrupted the Panthers’ offense throughout the night.

FIU’s offense managed only one touchdown, a short pass from Ronald Carney to Angel Petty late in the third quarter. Carney threw for 167 yards but was intercepted twice, while backup quarterback Jason Wright added another interception in limited action.

The Panthers’ brightest spot came from kicker Manny Blacknall, who accounted for FIU’s first nine points by converting three field goals.

For South Florida, however, the night was another statement performance.

After putting up 60+ points in back-to-back games to open the season, the Bulls appear to have one of the most explosive offenses in the country as they continue building momentum early in the 2029 campaign.

USF POSTGAME REPORT
USF 63 – FIU 16
Image

Offense
–USF’s offense stayed red hot for the second straight week, rolling past FIU 63–16 in Miami behind a balanced attack that punished the Panthers both on the ground and through the air.
–Quarterback Locklan Hewlett continued his strong start to the season, completing 26 of 37 passes for 351 yards and four touchdowns without an interception. Hewlett repeatedly found mismatches in FIU’s secondary and kept the offense moving with efficient decision making. He now has 855 yards, 12 touchdowns and no interceptions.
–Running back Connor Suggs delivered the night’s most explosive performance, rushing for 149 yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries. His 81-yard touchdown run in the second quarter broke the game open and showcased the big-play ability USF’s rushing attack can bring. Suggs carried the ball just ten times against UCF last week, reportedly battling cramps.
–Gerald Camarda proved to be Hewlett’s most dangerous target, hauling in four receptions for 99 yards and three touchdowns, including scoring plays of 44 and 39 yards.
–Lamar Sweet continued his strong season as well, leading all receivers with 10 catches for 148 yards and a 48-yard touchdown in the third quarter.
–USF finished with 593 yards of offense while averaging 7.7 yards per play, controlling the game with both tempo and physicality.
–“When we can run the ball like that and still throw it effectively, we’re tough to defend,” Head Coach DJ Porter said. “Connor set the tone tonight.

Defense
–USF’s defense delivered another dominant effort, limiting FIU to just 253 yards of offense while forcing three interceptions.
–The Bulls controlled the line of scrimmage throughout the night, holding FIU to just 86 rushing yards and only 4.3 yards per play.
–Linebacker Armon Chambers led the defense with eight tackles and a sack, while Ralph Livings added a sack and two tackles for loss.
–The secondary made its presence felt as well, with interceptions by Tracy Bennett, Matt Ansah, and Nick Jones halting any Panthers momentum.
–FIU’s only touchdown came late in the third quarter when Ronald Carney connected with Angel Petty on a short pass, but the Bulls responded immediately to restore control.

Special Teams
–Kicker Dom Bragg was perfect once again, converting all nine extra points on the night.
–Punter Dorian McSurdy was rarely needed thanks to USF’s offensive dominance, but delivered a strong 51-yard punt when called upon.
–The Bulls’ return units also contributed, combining for 123 kick return yards with Emmanuel York providing a spark with a 44-yard return.

Quotables
Connor gave us the spark early and everything kind of flowed from there.” – DJ Porter
Our line created huge lanes tonight. Once I hit the second level it was just go,” – Connor Suggs
We’re playing fast and trusting the system. That’s when this offense is at its best,” – Locklan Hewlett
Three takeaways is the kind of defense we want to play every week,” – Armon Chambers

News
-Connor Suggs has been named the American Conference Offensive Player of the Week.
–USF has now scored 60+ points in back-to-back games to open the 2029 season.
–Connor Suggs’ 81-yard touchdown run is the longest play from scrimmage for the Bulls this season.
–Gerald Camarda’s three-touchdown performance gives him four receiving scores through the first two games of the year.

Injury Notes
–USF received significant injury news following the game.
-Freshman TE Cam Deablo suffered a broken hip and will likely miss the remainder of the season.
-WR Lamar Sweet, who leads the team in receptions and yards, broke his wrist and is expected to miss two months of action.
-CB Ja'Quan Bean is expected to return next week after a foot fracture.
-CB David Igbinoghene had successful surgery on his torn bicep.

Next Up
–USF will host NC State next week in their home opener.
