Stanford pulls away in the fourth quarter against Houston for blowout win in opener
So much of the lead up to Stanford's opener against Houston was about Alex Rowe's return to Palo Alto, where he led the Cardinal to an ACC Championship and a playoff appearance before being replaced by Earl Nienhuis, leading to his transfer to the Cougars.

But it was Paul Garrison who got his revenge on Saturday night, bouncing back from allowing a touchdown that gave Houston a brief two-point lead to breaking up a pass on fourth down in the fourth quarter in the midst of Stanford's 28-0 run to pull away from Houston and win 45-19.

"We've got a lot of respect for [Rowe]," Stanford coach Bubba Mack said after the game, "He's a talented quarterback, tremendous leader so I'm sure he's going to have a great season like he always does."

The defense dominated the first half, sacking Rowe four times and allowing just a field goal at the half. Houston would eventually find their groove, aided by Rowe's scrambling ability, particularly on third down, converting on third and seven with a 26-yard run that set up his rushing touchdown in the third quarter for the first touchdown of the game. He would then find Juwan Post for a 58-yard touchdown to make it 19-17 late in the third quarter with Post beating Garrison, which would prove to be their last points of the game.

The lead would be short lived with true freshman Damien Yeboah returning the ensuing kickoff 49 yards and then a 16-yard run by Anthony Masifilo on third and two got the Cardinal within striking distance where it was Nienhuis' turn to use his legs, scrambling for a fourteen yard touchdown.

Following Garrison's pass breakup on fourth down, Stanford went on an eleven play scoring drive where Nienhuis completed all four of his pass attempts to get Stanford into the redzone where the running game would do the rest, converting a fourth and two and then pushing it in from three yards out by Trevon Winbush to begin the rout.

Stanford coach Bubba Mack did his best to throw water on Alex Rowe's return to Palo Alto after his less than smooth exit which featured Stanford trying to replace him, him eventually leaving and paving the way for Earl Nienhuis to be Stanford's next quarterback, leading them to a national championship. Mack was complimentary of Rowe before and after the game, calling him a great player and a great leader, dismissing any notion of bad blood.

The game in a lot of ways was a microcosm of Rowe as a player, his strengths, his weaknesses and ultimately why Stanford needed to upgrade in order to compete for national titles.

He showed toughness and grit, getting sacked six times and bounced back from early struggles to deliver some big time throws and get Houston back into the game but when it came time to make the plays that mattered, at the highest level moments, his lack of elite physical traits showed up.

Anthony Masifilo handles the lion share of the carries
It's only one game and it was a bit of a strange one with Stanford never having full control of the game until the fourth quarter where it pulled away. However, it's still interesting that Stanford's top rusher was indeed Masifilo, the listed starter, and he played the most snaps at running back with twenty-seven.

Trevon Winbush, who scored three touchdowns, had 24 while Rashawn Crouse, last year's lead back, was fourth with fifteen snaps. He did get six carries on those fifteen snaps so when Crouse was on the field, he got the ball quite a bit but it'll be an interesting situation to monitor as the season develops.

Percy Cadet's junior season is off to a great start
The third-year pass rusher out of Mountain View couldn't have asked for a better start to the season with three tackles for loss, two sacked and a forced fumble for the former four-star recruit.

Cadet is draft eligible and while he's always been a solid player for the Cardinal, registering eleven sacks over the last two seasons with 21 tackles for loss, he needs to showcase to NFL teams that he can be that disruptive pass rusher if he's going to get a top-100 grade once it's all said and done.

He'll get another chance to put up some good film for NFL scouts next week when they take on Michigan who has two solid offensive tackles in K'Von Agnew, the transfer from Buffalo, and Max Frost, a third-year starter.
