#12 Baylor Pulls Away Late to Defeat #15 UNLV 35-20, Claim 2027 Big 12 Title

Dallas, TX --
No. 12 Baylor leaned on explosive plays from quarterback Jacobe Robinson and a dominant fourth quarter to defeat No. 15 UNLV 35-20 in the 2027 Big 12 Championship Game on Saturday night, capturing the program’s first conference crown of the expanded era.

The Bears (12-1) scored 14 points in the final period and added a defensive touchdown in the closing minutes to turn a tense championship battle into a comfortable victory. UNLV (10-3) hung around into the fourth quarter but couldn’t keep pace with Baylor’s firepower down the stretch.

UNLV opened the scoring with a 19-yard Rickie Rosenfels field goal midway through the first quarter, but Baylor responded almost immediately.

With 1:52 remaining in the opening period, Robinson found Jadon Porter streaking downfield for an 81-yard touchdown strike — a momentum-swinging play that gave the Bears a 7-3 lead and set the tone for the night.

Robinson was just getting started.

The Rebels answered early in the second quarter when Treston McMillan powered in from 21 yards out to reclaim a 10-7 lead. Baylor countered with a 43-yard touchdown connection between Robinson and Jarius Moore to swing the advantage back to the Bears.

UNLV wasn’t done. In a creative wrinkle, McMillan connected with Brian Ismail on a 9-yard touchdown pass with 38 seconds left before halftime, sending the Rebels into the break with a 17-14 lead and real belief they could pull the upset.

Robinson capped a methodical drive with an 8-yard touchdown pass to Joseph Dodds at the 4:50 mark, putting the Bears back on top 21-17. From there, Baylor’s defense tightened, forcing UNLV into tougher down-and-distance situations and keeping the Rebels out of the end zone the rest of the way.

Rosenfels trimmed the deficit to 21-20 with a 34-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter, but that would be as close as UNLV would get.

With 1:28 remaining, Dodds punched in a 16-yard touchdown run to extend Baylor’s lead to 28-20. Then came the knockout blow.

After McMillan's third fumble of the day, deep in its own territory, Rashad Rugamba scooped up a fumble and returned it 37 yards for a touchdown with just over a minute left, igniting the Baylor sideline and putting the championship out of reach.

yeah that was a tough one, having a chance to tie it at the end to only fumble and see it returned for a TD. Brutal. At least we got an invite to the best bowl in college football!

Rainbow Warriors Erupt In Second Quarter, Roll Past Red Raiders In CFP Opener

Honolulu, HI -- Seventh-seeded Hawai‘i waited all season for its playoff moment. When it arrived Saturday night, the Rainbow Warriors delivered a surge that #10 Texas Tech simply could not withstand.

Behind four touchdowns from sophomore quarterback Dermaricus Davis and a dominant second quarter, Hawai‘i pulled away for a 41-24 victory over the Red Raiders in the first round of the 2027 College Football Playoff.

The win sends the Rainbow Warriors (13-1) on to the quarterfinals and sends Texas Tech (11-2) back to Lubbock after a promising season ended with a one-sided final act in the islands.

The opening quarter unfolded like a heavyweight fight.

Hawai‘i struck first on Darrelle Dimke’s 2-yard touchdown run midway through the period. Texas Tech answered with a 22-yard touchdown pass from Cliff Honeywell to Quinten Joyner, then grabbed a 14-7 lead when Joyner broke loose for a 17-yard scoring run with nine seconds left in the quarter.

In between, Davis found Jackson Harris on a 15-yard strike to knot the game at 14-14 after one.

The fireworks continued early in the second quarter when Texas Tech defensive back Peyton Morgan jumped a route and returned an interception 62 yards for a touchdown, briefly silencing the home crowd and putting the Red Raiders up 21-14.

That was the last time Texas Tech would celebrate.

Davis responded with poise, guiding a touchdown drive capped by a 17-yard pass to Harris. Moments later, he kept it himself for a 16-yard touchdown run to give the Warriors the lead for good.

With the Red Raiders’ defense reeling, and a short field after a Roderick Pleasant interception, Davis struck again, zipping a 17-yard touchdown to Antoine Stokes with 2:27 left in the half. Sean McFarland added a 21-yard field goal as time expired, punctuating a stunning 24-point second quarter that turned a 21-14 deficit into a 38-21 halftime cushion.

After the halftime explosion, Hawai‘i’s defense took over.

Texas Tech managed just a 47-yard field goal from DeVaunte Skaggs in the fourth quarter for its only points of the second half. The Red Raiders were shut out in the third quarter and struggled to generate sustained drives as Hawai‘i consistently won on early downs and forced long-yardage situations.

McFarland’s 31-yard field goal midway through the fourth quarter provided the final margin.

The Rainbow Warriors will now turn their attention to the quarterfinals, where they will take on the Big Ten Champs, two-seeded Oregon (12-1).
