OSPREY FALL SHORT IN DEROZAN'S DEBUT

The "R2" Era kicked off at the Palm Tree Shootout as UNF took on #17 ranked Arkansas.. North Florida would play well in the opening half and actually led (21-19) at one point but the Razorbacks would finish the 1st half on a 23-4 run to take a (44-25) lead into the break.

After leading the team with 8 points in the 1st half, UNF Freshman Dominic Root would catch fire in the 2nd half connecting on 4/9 from deep to finish the game with 26 points leading all scorers, but North Florida would lose the turnover battle (12/4).. Arkansas's depth was just to much for North Florida and Coach Derozan as the Hogs finish with 5 players in double digits led by SR SF Raheim Ogunride (81)-19 pts and SR PG Derek Dawson (81) 17 points and 8 assists. FINAL SCORE ARKANSAS-92 NORTH FLORIDA-72

A TALE OF 2 HALVES

UNF would face Providence (lost to Temple 75-72) in Round 2 of the tournament.. Like Arkansas, Providence didn't come in ranked in the Top-25 but were still a heavy favorite to in the game.

UNF would play a solid 1st half and actually lead (42-35) going into the break behind a team effort as SR PG Kelyn Doss lead the way with 9 points on 2/3 3pt shooting.

However the 2nd half was the opposite as the Flyers caught fire outscoring the Osprey (45-28) as the Trio of PG J Wilder (17 pts) SG R. Jagla (18 pts) and Center P Deane (17 pts)

"Well Providence isn't ranked, to be honest their roster top to bottom is more talented The entire starting 5 are Juniors (all rated above 80) too. If they don't win the Big East this year I would expect them to challenge for the crown next year for sure"

Well it was a off day for D. Root ( 2pt).. Doss would lead the way with 17 pts well Center Rayshawn Sidiebe finished the game with a double double of 12 pts and 11 rebs. The Duo of Z. Gravees (12 pts) and D. Carter (10 pts) at the PF spot also helped

R2 GETS HIS FIRST WIN!!

When your the son of a legendary coach who has over 800 career wins and multiple National Titles with multiple schools, the pressure to succeed right away can be somewhat overwhelming. After a 0-2 start Coach Ryne Derozan II "R2" can rest a little easier now that the monkey is off his back.

It was a battle from tip off to the final buzzer as UNF took on Marist in the losers bracket of the Palm Tree Classic. Marist opened up the 1st Round with a (85-45) loss to Miami FL before following it up with a (88-76) loss to Houston in Round 2 but came out trying their best to not start 0-3 on the season as they took on North Florida.

The Red Fox's played a solid 1st half and only trailed the Osprey by 1 point going into the break (40-39) with the bulk of the starting 5 playing most of the 1st half despite getting just 3 points from SR Mustafa Simms (79). UNF had a balanced attack with 3 different players scoring 8 points or more including JR SF Ronny Garza who led the team with 12 points.

Garza continued to play well in the 2nd half as well hitting 3/3 from deep to finish the game 5/9 from beyond the arc for a team high and game high 21 points. but it was his final shot that earned him the game ball.. Tied (77-77) with less then 14 seconds to play, Coach Derozan decided that Garza would take the final shot..

"He was 4/8 at the time so I figured well 50/50 He either hits the shot and we win or if he miss's we go to Overtime and with 3 of their top 4 scorers battling foul trouble I felt pretty good about our chances in OT"

Garza's shot was straight money tough as UNF and Coach Derozan pickup win #1 ..FINAL SCORE UNF-80 MARIST-77

R. Sidible added 11 pts and 6 reb well Z. Graves had 15 pts and 9 reb joining Garza in double digits for UNF.. SR PG K. Doss also had a solid game with 9 pts and a team high 8 assists.

UPSET CITY!!!!

Coach Derozan the the UNF Osprey pulled off a huge upset win over (3-0) Florida on Monday night for what currently holds as the biggest win of both R2 career and honestly the schools in just their 3 season in Division 1 basketball.

UNF led (50-46) at the half behind a complete team effort in which the Osprey made 5/10 from beyond the arc but was even more impressive i the 2nd half as they hold the Gators to just 29 points well continuing to shoot a hot hand from deep (4/8) finishing the game 9/18 (50%) well holding Florida to just 7/22 (33%) FINAL SCORE UNF-92 FLORIDA-75

For a 4th straight game UNF had a different play finish the game as the highest scorer on the team yet still had 5 players score in double digits.

PF Z. Graves-20 pts 9 rebounds led all scorers. PG K. Doss added 13 pts on 1/4 3PT, SG D Root had 12 pts on 4/6 3PT, SF R. Garza had 11 pts and 6 Rebounds well shooting 2/4 3PT.

FR PF Dramane Carter led the bench with 10 points well Walkon SG Edmund Bowen added 8 points going 3/3 FG and 2/2 3PT.

UNF MAKES IT 3 IN A ROW!!!!

When UNF and UCF met Tuesday night the matchup was 2 teams going in different directions.. UNF after starting the year 0-2 had won 2 straight including one of the biggest wins in school history beating Florida on the road. UCF started their year off with a home loss to Nevada (85-81) and then played in the Deodorant Classic opening up the tournament with a (88-69) loss to Top-25 ranked Villanova then lost (73-60) to George Mason and then lost their 4th straight falling to Penn State (74-67).

Despite their 0-4 start the Golden Knights played a solid 1st half with a buzzer beating bucket lead at the half (43-42) , shooting a impressive 4/11 from beyond the arc and making 18/20 from the Free throw line.

However in the 2nd half UCF would struggle, scoring just 29 points shooting 2/10 from deep and making 10/19 from the line.

UNF continued to be solid from beyond the Arc as they Osprey finish the game 8/19 as Dominic Root continues to to showcase himself as one of the better 3pt shooters in the nation (3/4). Root finished with 16 points well fellow backcourt teammate Kelyn Doss finished with a team high 17 pts (2/4 3pt) well dishing out a team high 8 assists just missing out on a double double.

Well Root continues to be the rising Freshman star, fellow Freshman Dramane Carter had another solid game off the bench with 9 pts and a team high 8 rebounds.

UNF now (3-2) on the season will finally head home to play their very first home game of the season as they host (3-2) Coastal Carolina.and (2-4) Savannah State

DEFENSE MIA!!!

UNF kicked off their season opener hosting Coastal Carolina in front of a pretty small crowd (about 1000 fans) but those in attendance were witness to a barn burner that featured both team scoring over the century mark and both teams shooting over 70% on the day from the Field and both teams were over 60% from Deep.

Coastal Carolina ended the 1st half with the lead (61-53) after a 11-3 run to close out the half until SO Joe Thomas hit the buzzer beating 3pt shot for UNF.

SO PG Alex Padilla (19 pts) was a perfect 7/7 FG and 5/5 3PT for Coastal well backcourt teammate SR SG Stepen Gogerty added 15 pts.

For UNF it was Freshman Dominic Root leading the way yet again as he finishes the half with 14 points making 4/7 from deep.

UNF opened up the 2nd half on a 21-6 run to take a 7 point lead with 8 minutes to play in the game and never looked back. Thomas who hit the buzzer beater to end the half started the 2nd half with a trio of 3's and would score a season high 22 points going a perfect 6/6 from deep but when you score over 100 points it's pretty easy for several guy's to have career days. Final Score North Florida-126 Coastal Carolina-108

Gogerty led the way for the CC with 30 points hitting 5/8 from 3pt, well Padilla scored just 5 points in the 2nd half to finish with 24 pts hitting 6/8 from deep.. Padilla made it a double double on the day finishing with 10 assists.

NORTH FLORIDA MAKES IT 6 STRAIGHT!!!

UNF and Coach Ryne Derozan moved to 6-2 on the season with a pair of homes wins to close out their 3 game home stand. The Osprey are now 6-0 since starting the season with back to back loss's but will face a difficult challenge next week as they head out of town for a 3 game road trip that includes matchup's with Miami and Florida State as well as FAU.


VS SAVANNAH STATE (FINAL UNF-72 SAVANNAH ST-56)

North Florida led (33-23)) at the break and kept things going in the 2nd half despite their worst 3pt shooting effort on the season. SR PG Kelyn Doss was the hero tonight scoring a team high 18 points on 3/3 3PT well the rest of the team combined to go 1/7 from beyond the arc.

Senior Center Rayshawn Sidibe had his 2nd double double of the season as the scored 16 points and grabbed 16 rebounds well Freshman Dramaine Carter was solid off the bench with 7 points 12 rebounds 2 steals and 2 blocks.

VS FLORIDA A&M (FINAL UNF-86 FA&M-78

UNF dominated the 1st half (53-39) well A&M made a late run in the 2nd half but came up short. North Florida was 6/12 from deep tonight.. Despite scoring 86 points only 2 players scored in double digits as all 10 players on the Osprey scored points and played double digit minutes, as starters Dominic Root (7 pts) and Ronny Garza (1 pt) struggled with early foul trouble.

Rayshawn Sidibe followed up his double double performance with another as he scored a season high 24 points to go with his 11 rebounds. Doss just missed joining him as he scores 9 points and dishes out a team high 8 assists.
