ESPN Breaking News - Pittsburgh Steelers QB Anthony Richardson Arrested on Multiple Felony Charges Following Fatal Shooting in Indianapolis
By Adam Schefter, Dan Graziano, and ESPN Staff

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department held a press conference Sunday afternoon confirming the early morning arrest of Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Anthony Richardson, 25, on multiple felony and misdemeanor charges stemming from a fatal shooting that occurred late Saturday night in the Broad Ripple neighborhood of Indianapolis.

IMPD Chief Marcus Webb addressed reporters at approximately 2:15 PM local time.

"At approximately 1:47 AM on Sunday, July 14th, officers responded to a reported shooting in the 800 block of Westfield Boulevard near The Patron Saint restaurant and bar. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male, later identified as 27-year-old Christiano Gonzalez of Indianapolis, suffering from two gunshot wounds to the torso. Mr. Gonzalez was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel. Security footage from the establishment and surrounding area allowed our officers to identify a suspect vehicle — a 2026 Dodge Challenger Hellcat — and issue an APB. Officers made contact with the suspect at a private residence on the northwest side of Indianapolis at approximately 4:07 AM. The suspect, identified as Anthony Richardson, was cooperative with officers, submitted voluntarily to a field sobriety evaluation, and was subsequently placed under arrest."

Chief Webb confirmed Richardson's blood alcohol content registered at .110 at the time of testing, above Indiana's legal limit of .08. Webb took no further questions, deferring entirely to the Marion County Prosecutor's Office for details on the formal charges.

---

Marion County Prosecutor Sandra Elkins addressed reporters immediately following Webb's remarks, outlining the charges her office has formally filed against Richardson as of Sunday afternoon.

"After reviewing the evidence collected by IMPD, including security footage, witness statements, and the results of the sobriety evaluation, our office has filed the following charges against Mr. Richardson: Voluntary Manslaughter, a Level 2 Felony under Indiana Code 35-42-1-3; Carrying a Firearm While Intoxicated, a Class A Misdemeanor under Indiana Code 35-47-4-6; Carrying a Firearm in a Licensed Establishment, a Class A Misdemeanor under Indiana Code 35-47-4-8; and Obstruction of Justice, a Level 6 Felony, related to Mr. Richardson's departure from the scene prior to the arrival of law enforcement."

Elkins was direct and deliberate when addressing the central facts of the case.

"Christiano Gonzalez was unarmed. He was unarmed when he was shot, and he was unarmed when he died. That is not in dispute. Whatever circumstances preceded this shooting, the law is unambiguous — the use of deadly force in the state of Indiana requires a reasonable belief of imminent deadly force from the other party. Mr. Gonzalez presented no such threat at the time Mr. Richardson discharged his weapon. A man is dead. Our office will pursue these charges accordingly."

When pressed by reporters on potential mitigating circumstances, Elkins declined to elaborate further. "The facts will be presented in a court of law. That is where this case will be decided."

---

Within the hour, Richardson's attorney Marcus T. Holloway of Indianapolis held his own brief press conference outside the Marion County Courthouse, pushing back firmly on the prosecution's framing and providing the first detailed account of the events that led to the shooting.

"What happened last night was a tragedy — but it was not a crime. Not in any meaningful sense of the word as it applies to Anthony Richardson's state of mind and his intentions in that moment."

Holloway laid out the sequence of events in full.

"Anthony and his fiancée, Jada Richardson, were in Indianapolis visiting family before the start of training camp. They had dinner and drinks at The Patron Saint, a place Anthony has frequented for years when he's back home. At some point during the evening, Jada stepped outside. She was approached by a man — later identified as Christiano Gonzalez — who robbed her at implied gunpoint, demanding her purse and jewelry and making a verbal threat implying he was armed. Jada, understandably terrified, handed over her belongings. When Anthony came outside and she told him she'd just been robbed at gunpoint, he did what any man in his position would do — he reacted. He pursued Mr. Gonzalez to recover what had been taken from the woman he loves."

Holloway paused before continuing.

"When Mr. Gonzalez turned around, Anthony made a split-second decision based on what his fiancée had told him — that this man had a weapon. He had no reason to doubt her. He had every reason to believe his life and hers were in danger. The fact that Mr. Gonzalez turned out to be unarmed is a tragedy that Anthony will carry with him for the rest of his life. But it does not make him a murderer. It makes him a man who was given bad information in a terrifying moment and made a decision he believed was necessary to protect his family."

Holloway addressed Richardson's departure from the scene directly.

"Anthony recovered Jada's belongings and in the immediate shock of what had just occurred, made the poor decision to leave rather than wait for police. He deeply regrets that decision. He was at his mother's home within the hour, and when IMPD arrived at 4 AM, he opened the door, answered their questions, and submitted to every request they made of him without hesitation. That is not the behavior of a man with something to hide. That is the behavior of a man who made a mistake in a moment of panic and then owned it."

On the question of Richardson's blood alcohol level, Holloway did not deflect.

"Anthony had drinks at dinner. He's acknowledged that. He was not driving when the incident occurred — he was on foot, reacting to a robbery in progress. The intoxication charges will be addressed in court, and we are confident in how that evidence will be presented."

Holloway closed with a direct appeal to the public.

"Anthony Richardson has spent his entire career giving back to this community and others. He has been one of the most visible advocates in the NFL for responsible gun ownership and community safety. He is a father. He is a fiancé. He is a son. Last night he made decisions under duress that he cannot take back, and he will have to live with that. But the characterization of Anthony Richardson as a criminal is one we will fight with every resource available to us."

---

Richardson was booked at the Marion County Jail at approximately 4:52 AM and posted bond Sunday morning. Jada Richardson has been cooperating fully with investigators and has not been charged. Richardson's two-year-old son was not present at the time of the incident.

As of Sunday afternoon, the NFL has not yet issued a formal statement, though sources with knowledge of league operations told ESPN that Commissioner Roger Goodell has been briefed and that placement on the Commissioner's Exempt List is expected to be announced as early as Sunday evening. The designation would bar Richardson from all team activities while legal proceedings are ongoing.

The Pittsburgh Steelers, scheduled to open training camp on July 23rd, are also expected to release a statement by end of business Sunday. Sources within the organization described the atmosphere as "stunned," with one team official telling ESPN the franchise was "completely blindsided." Richardson, who signed a five-year, $360 million extension during the 2027 season, was entering what was widely considered the prime window of one of the most dynamic careers in the NFL.

The NFL Players Association has been notified and is expected to assign counsel to Richardson's case.

I made the decision middle of last year that something was going to happen this season to shake things up. I had different things thought up depending on how far we went in the playoffs. If we went to the SB, it was nuclear. I had something even crazier planed if we won it all :curtain:

Tomlin retiring was always going to happen, it felt like the perfect time. Would have rather had him go out with the SB, but can't win em all.

I love using Richardson, but for the sake of the games being compelling and not guarantees, felt like a change was necessary. I tried to make sure I didn't hedge my bets with my offseason moves even tho I knew what was coming - intentionally done after the Draft/FA so there was no immediate resolution - so I stuck to what I would do without the knowledge of life coming at Senor Richardson fast

NFL Places Richardson on Commissioner's Exempt List; Steelers Release Statement Following Arrest
By Adam Schefter, Dan Graziano, and ESPN Staff

The NFL and the Pittsburgh Steelers both released formal statements Sunday evening regarding the arrest of quarterback Anthony Richardson earlier in the day, capping a stunning 24-hour period that has thrown one of the league's most prominent franchises into uncertainty just nine days before the start of training camp.

As expected, the league announced Richardson has been placed on the Commissioner's Exempt List effective immediately, barring him from all team activities pending the outcome of the legal proceedings against him.

The full NFL statement, released under Commissioner Roger Goodell's name at 7:14 PM ET, reads as follows:

---

*"The NFL is aware of the charges filed today against Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Anthony Richardson by the Marion County Prosecutor's Office in Indianapolis, Indiana. We have been in contact with law enforcement and are in the process of gathering all available information regarding this matter.*

*Effective immediately, Anthony Richardson has been placed on the Commissioner's Exempt List. This designation is not a finding of guilt, nor is it punitive in nature. It is a procedural step that allows the legal process to proceed without disruption to the integrity of league operations.*

*The NFL takes matters of this nature with the utmost seriousness. Our Personal Conduct Policy exists to uphold the standards we hold ourselves to as a league, as employers, and as a public institution. A man has lost his life. We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Christiano Gonzalez.*

*We will reserve further judgment until the legal process has run its course. At that time, and in accordance with our Personal Conduct Policy, the Commissioner's office will conduct its own review and determine what further action, if any, is warranted. We will have no further comment on this matter until that process is complete."*

---

The Pittsburgh Steelers released their own statement approximately forty minutes later at 7:53 PM ET. The statement, attributed to the organization collectively rather than a single executive, was notably more personal in tone than the league's measured language — reflecting what sources inside the building described to ESPN as genuine shock and grief within the organization.

The full Steelers statement reads:

---

*"There are no words adequate for a day like today.*

*The Pittsburgh Steelers are aware of the charges filed against Anthony Richardson and the tragic circumstances that led to them. We have been in contact with Anthony, his family, and his legal representatives, and we will continue to support him as a human being as he navigates what is undoubtedly the most difficult period of his life.*

*Anthony Richardson has meant everything to this organization and to this city. What he has given to our team, our fans, and this community over the past two years represents the very best of what this game can produce. That does not change today. Our care for Anthony as a person does not change today.*

*At the same time, we are an organization built on standards — standards of conduct, of accountability, and of responsibility to the communities we serve. We take the charges filed today with the full seriousness they deserve. A family in Indianapolis is grieving tonight, and we do not lose sight of that.*

*We will fully cooperate with the NFL's review process and will make no further personnel decisions until the legal process has reached its conclusion. We ask that our fans extend patience and grace to everyone affected by this tragedy as the facts continue to emerge.*

*Our thoughts are with the family of Christiano Gonzalez."*

---

The statements from both the league and the franchise were carefully worded, and notably neither addressed the details laid out earlier Sunday by Richardson's attorney Marcus Holloway — including the alleged robbery of Richardson's fiancée Jada Collins that preceded the shooting. Sources close to the Steelers told ESPN the organization is "very aware" of the full context of the incident but felt it was inappropriate to weigh in on the specifics while the legal process is in its earliest stages.

With Richardson now on the Exempt List, the Steelers face an immediate and pressing question at quarterback heading into training camp. The team currently has Will Howard and Alonza Barnett III on the roster behind Richardson. General Manager Omar Khan is expected to address the media Monday morning, with the quarterback situation expected to be the primary topic.

Richardson himself has not spoken publicly since the arrest. His attorney Holloway told ESPN Sunday evening that Richardson is "with his family, processing an incredibly painful set of circumstances" and that a further statement from Richardson personally would come "when the time is right."

Steelers GM Omar Khan Addresses Richardson Fallout

Pittsburgh, PA. - Pittsburgh Steelers General Manager Omar Khan addressed reporters Monday morning at the team's facility in Pittsburgh, speaking publicly for the first time since the arrest of franchise quarterback Anthony Richardson sent shockwaves through the NFL on Sunday. Khan was measured and deliberate throughout, carefully navigating the personal and professional dimensions of a situation the organization is still very much processing.

"Yesterday was a difficult day for this organization and for a lot of people," Khan began. "Anthony is someone we care deeply about as a person, and that isn't going to change. But I also want to be clear — my responsibility every single day is to make sure the Pittsburgh Steelers are putting themselves in the best possible position to win football games. Both of those things can be true at the same time, and both of those things are true right now."

Khan declined to speak in detail about Richardson's legal situation, referring reporters to Sunday's organizational statement, but he did not shy away from the football reality the Steelers now face heading into training camp, which is scheduled to open July 23rd.

"With Anthony on the Commissioner's Exempt List, we currently have two quarterbacks on our roster. That's not where we want to be going into camp. We're going to take steps to address that. Whether that's through free agency, through trade conversations, or through the natural movement that happens as teams get into the preseason and make roster decisions — we're going to be active and we're going to be thorough."

When pressed on a timeline, Khan was noncommittal but acknowledged the urgency.

"We're not going to rush into something just to rush into it. But we also understand that training camp opens in eight days. We're aware of the clock."

Khan's comments immediately shift attention to a Steelers quarterback room that, as currently constructed, is threadbare by NFL standards. With Richardson removed from the equation, the depth chart as it stands projects Will Howard — a fourth-year pro out of Ohio State originally selected in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft — as the de facto starter heading into camp.

Howard has appeared in just nine games across three professional seasons, almost entirely in mop-up duty. His most notable moment came in Week 18 of the 2027 season, when he stepped in for a resting Richardson and completed 12 of 20 passes for 172 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception in a low-stakes regular season finale. It was a competent performance, especially considering the Bills were fighting for playoff positioning, but far from a performance that instilled confidence in him as a starting caliber NFL quarterback.

Behind Howard sits Alonza Barnett III, a second-year developmental quarterback who has yet to appear in a regular season game. AB3 projects as a practice squad caliber player at this stage of his career, not a legitimate NFL starter.

It is, by any measure, a dire situation for a franchise that spent the last two seasons watching Richardson carve up defenses on the way to back-to-back MVP awards and a Super Bowl championship.

Sources with knowledge of Pittsburgh's internal discussions told ESPN the organization has already begun making calls, with several names emerging as realistic targets across both the free agent market and potential trade conversations.

On the free agent side, the names generating the most traction include Gardner Minshew II, the well-traveled veteran who provides a known commodity and locker room steadiness that an unsettled roster might benefit from heading into a turbulent season. Jameis Winston, now 34, remains a polarizing but undeniably experienced option whose boom-or-bust profile fells at odds with what Pittsburgh typically values, though his familiarity with running an NFL offense at a high level keeps him in the conversation. Sam Howell, 27, represents a younger option with more upside after a rocky tenure in Washington, while Kenny Pickett — the former Steelers first-round pick who departed in the 2024 offseason — presents a storyline-laden reunion possibility that sources say the organization has not ruled out, though the optics would require careful management. Dillon Gabriel, four years into his professional career after being drafted in 2025, rounds out the free agent names in circulation, though his NFL resume to this point remains largely that of a backup.

On the trade front, ESPN has learned Pittsburgh has made preliminary inquiries on two names. Maddux Madsen, the San Francisco 49ers' second-year quarterback, has yet to take a regular season snap but is regarded within league circles as one of the more intriguing young developmental arms in the league. The 49ers, however, are unlikely to move him cheaply given the organizational investment they've made. Kevin Jennings, now three years into his career with the Detroit Lions, is another name Pittsburgh has explored, though Detroit's willingness to part with him remains unclear.

The most likely path forward, according to sources, is a two-pronged approach — signing a veteran free agent to stabilize the position heading into camp and provide genuine starter experience, then monitoring the landscape as teams work through the preseason and approach roster cut-downs in late August. That process historically shakes loose starting-caliber quarterbacks as depth charts clarify, and the Steelers are expected to be aggressive in that market if the right name becomes available.

"We know what we need," Khan said before departing Monday's press conference. "We're going to go get it."

might as well run with Barnett/Howard then because whoever you trade for/sign will be similarly rated as Richardson when you first got him anyway
