2028 Week Five Preview: #21 Washington Huskies (3-1) @ Maryland Terrapins (3-0)
Marcus Washington // TerpsvillePublished: September 22nd, 2028

The Maryland Terrapins come off their bye week and jump right back into the fire as they prepare to host the 21st-ranked Washington Huskies, without star running back Zymear Smith. The Huskies are reeling after dropping their first game of the season against the UCLA Bruins at Husky Stadium last week and will be looking to rebound, or risk falling completely out of the AP Rankings.

It's the age-old question for the Terrapins: coming off a dramatic victory over the then 5th-ranked Michigan Wolverines, would you have preferred to keep the train rolling, or do you embrace the rest after such a high-stakes clash? It's a question Coach Armando Leon will answer, among others, in our latest "Inside the Shell" segment following the preview graphic.

Inside the Shell

MW: "We're going to get right into it, Coach. Some would argue a bye week after such a galvanizing upset of the Michigan Wolverines is counterproductive, killing the momentum the team could have potentially gained with the win. Others argue that after the physical game, coming off a short week, it was a necessary evil to keep the team healthy. What side are you taking in the age-old debate?"

AL: "I think both can be true, Marcus. We needed the rest; we had a multitude of injuries during the Michigan game outside of Zymear. But at the same time, we were rolling and you hate to lose that momentum. Lucky for us, we've got another big game and if we can keep focus, execute, and take care of business then we'll have the momentum right back."

MW: "On the subject of Zymear, how is the offense going to adjust with him out for the remainder of the season? Is Malik going to carry more of a burden to produce offensively, or are you going to depend on Iverson Howard and Paul Colon to step in and fill the void?"

AL: "Next man up, Marcus. Our goal is to always establish the run and use that to open up everything else. Iverson is more than ready to step up and fill those shoes, Paul too, and so long as they can keep a steady presence in the backfield, we'll be more than fine offensively. Losing a dynamic athlete like Zymear hurts, but the depth we have and the creativity in our scheme should allow us to weather the storm."

MW: "Last question, defensively the unit is still struggling to get sacks, but is still impacting the game in a variety of ways and has yet to give up more than 20 points. Is there an emphasis to turn those 10 QB hits against Michigan into more sacks, or is the team overall content with the results?"

AL: "We've been getting at least 10 QB hits a game, despite only tallying six sacks this season, but defensively we're still playing at a high level. You'd like to see more sack numbers, but the amount of pressure we're generating is still affecting the offensive game plan and forcing errant throws, which we're turning into points. As long as that result continues, we're fine with however it comes."

•••

This matchup is going to show us how disciplined the Terrapins are this season. They're coming off a bye week, without their second-best player offensively, and are hosting a Huskies team that is out to prove they aren't frauds. I think at some point for the defense to keep up the quality of play they've achieved thus far, they're going to have to start generating some sacks.

Teams are still trying to throw it deep on the Terrapins, but I think as the season wears on you'll start to see the adjustments to quicker, short passes to try and negate the big-play ability of the secondary. Jedd Fisch's Washington teams are typically disciplined offensively, with a strategic mix of deep and intermediate passing, and you have to wonder if they'll be the team that cracks the code on Leon's defense.

I think if the team struggles to replace Zymear Smith, especially with the Huskies knowing Howard is going to be the bell-cow back, and continues to struggle turning pressure into sacks then this could be the first loss in the Leon era. It'll hinge on the trenches, on both sides, but with an extra week to prepare I think the Terps do enough to pull it out.

Maryland 24, Washington 20.

Huskies Clutch 4th-Quarter De-Shells Terrapins
Marcus Washington // TerpsvillePublished: September 23rd, 2028

The Maryland Terrapins opened the 2028 season 3-0 by being the more physical team no matter who lined up across from them. That ended when the Washington Huskies came to town and simply overpowered the Terrapins in the 4th quarter, storming back from a 20-10 deficit to snatch a 24-20 victory at SECU Stadium and hand Armando Leon his first loss as a head coach.

The Terps were up 14-10 at the two-minute warning for the 1st half, but facing 4th-and-2 from the 19, Jedd Fisch opted to go for the conversion and try for a go-ahead touchdown before the break. Instead, Tim Hufanga was stuffed for a two-yard loss and the Terps' offense rallied for a last-second field goal to take a 17-10 lead into the break, with possession coming out of the half.

The Terps would then take the opening second-half drive down the field for another field goal, draining over half of the 3rd-quarter clock with it, but eventually had to settle for another field goal, eschewing a 4th-and-goal from the 11 opportunity.

After three-and-outs from both squads, the Huskies would finally answer back. Armed with great field position, taking over at their own 45-yard line, the Huskies moved down the field in just five plays before Brian Pennel found Paul Mesko for the 18-yard touchdown.

Still, the Terps had a 20-17 lead and just needed to salt away the clock to preserve their second straight AP-ranked win. Instead, the Terps' drive stalled after a lone first down after a rare drop by Emanuel Ross. The Maryland defense would step up, limiting the Huskies to a singular first down before forcing the punt.

With 3:23 remaining in the 4th, the feeling inside SECU Stadium was that Malik Washington would secure a few first downs and the Terps would escape with the narrow win.

Instead, another drop on 3rd down, this one by Za'Ron Collins, led to another punt. The misfortune was exacerbated with Carter Jula's punt only traveling 35 yards, gifting the Huskies the ball at the Terrapins' 45 with 2:32 remaining.

Pennel and the Huskies wasted little time. Paul Mesko hauled in a screen pass and rumbled 31 yards before Hufanga churned out 11 yards, followed by a 3-yard touchdown run. To add insult to injury, the Huskies' offensive line absolutely flattened the Terps, plowing a veritable highway into the end zone for Hufanga.

Washington didn't quit, however, and led a spirited drive down the field, converting on 3rd down twice in short succession, but when the Terps reached the Washington 30-yard line, they were running out of time. With just 15 seconds left, Washington attempted a pair of shots into the end zone that both came up incomplete, with the final bouncing off two Huskies before being batted down to clinch the narrow 24-20 victory for Washington.

After the game, Coach Leon credited the Huskies for taking away their running game and elevating their play in the 4th quarter.

•••

Question One - Aisha Thompson (Terps Magaize): "Coach, in the pivotal 4th quarter it seemed like your offense went into a shell, excuse the pun. In fact, your offense only recorded one first down after the opening drive of the second half until they were trailing with two minutes to go. Did the Huskies simply step up their play in the final frame, or did the Terrapins play scared?"

Armando Leon: "First off, credit to Washington. They're the first team to play us and outphysical us for four quarters. They beat us at our own game and while frustrating, it just shows that we aren't where we need to be yet. I'll take full credit for the 4th-quarter lack of execution on the offense. I told Coach Shanahan to kill the clock and try to limit the amount of time the Huskies would have after we took the 20-10 lead. In hindsight, maybe we should have stayed aggressive. Once you take your foot off the gas, it's hard to reapply it and despite a heroic effort on the final drive, we came up just short. It's a learning moment, for me especially, and one we will grow from."

Question Two - Kurt Gunner (The Husky Herald): "Coach Leon, your defense was able to generate some pressure on Brian Pennel, recording three sacks, but unlike in games past, that pressure didn't result in turnovers. In fact, in the pivotal 4th quarter Pennel was a perfect 8/8 for 108 yards and a touchdown. What adjustments did the Huskies make in the final frame that left your defense just a step behind?"

Armando Leon: "They were getting the ball out quickly and weren't keying on one receiver, Kurt. When you play an aggressive defense like we do, the quickest way to neutralize it is to get the ball out quickly. We didn't get home fast enough and they had a lot of built-in option routes, in addition to some creative RPOs, that allowed them to be proactive pre-snap to what we were doing. It's situations like those where you need someone on the defensive line to simply step up and win a one-on-one matchup, and we weren't able to do that today."

Question Three - Ryan Parker (Big Ten Network): "Final question, Coach. Malik Washington made some spectacular plays with his legs throughout this game, but on that final drive the Huskies recorded their only two sacks of the contest. Is that Malik trying to do too much, the offensive line wearing down, or simply the Huskies' defense stepping up in the clutch?"

Armando Leon: "I don't think you can point to any one of those without crediting the others. Malik was trying to make plays and sometimes when you know the clock is running down, you get eager to make something happen quickly. That isn't a fault and not something we're going to harp on; we want him to be creative. The offensive line was gassed, the Huskies are no joke up front, and that definitely played a role in Malik looking to escape the pocket sooner than he was earlier in the contest. But again, hats off to the Huskies. They came into hostile territory and made their mark. The sacks played a key role in us running out of time in the end, and if we had those 10, 12 seconds left? We could have a different result. So, to get back to your question, Ryan. Yes, on all accounts."

•••

As I said in the opener, the Maryland Terrapins simply got outmuscled as this game wore on. Part of it could be the coaching decision to get conservative and try to kill clock, but that feels like a backhanded compliment to a Huskies team that never gave up. When push came to shove, they pushed and we folded.

And you can't point to any one unit. Sure, the offense didn't kill much clock after the field goal and forced the defense into some rough spots, but they also allowed the Huskies to score on two of their final three drives—although it is worth acknowledging that both those touchdown drives came on short fields.

At the end of the day, when the schedule was released prior to this season, this was a game that every "expert" had penciled as a loss. You know what other game was penciled as a loss? Michigan.

You're never happy to lose a game and you won't see me, and I'm sure Coach Leon feels the same, talking about moral victories. But the kids may just be alright in the long run.

Sometimes you need to lose to realize what you have to gain. Now that we know the sting of defeat, we can go Fearlessly Forward.

ngl I was heated in that 4th quarter, but it was my fault. Tried to play ball control and got conservative, then make magic on 3rd down and they punked us.

Maryland Loses More Than the Game Against Washington
Marcus Washington // TerpsvillePublished: September 25th, 2028

The Maryland Terrapins didn't just lose a football game on Saturday to the Washington Huskies. It's deeper than that. The Terrapins had four prospects on hand for the clash against the 21st-ranked Washington Huskies, among them four-star QB and 20th-overall quarterback Garrett Duck. The day after watching the Huskies give up 14 4th-quarter points in the loss, Duck announced he was verbally committing to the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Duck did not directly cite the loss, or anything about his visit to College Park, as a reason for his decision, but the timing has left the Maryland coaching staff with a sour taste in the aftermath.

It's easy to have a knee-jerk react to Duck's timing of his announcement, but I don't think it's fair to put the loss to Washington as the sole reason. Chad Clement, Marcus Bridges, and Ben Rios were all on hand for the loss as well and to this point, none have committed elsewhere. On the contrary, the Terrapins are still in the thick of all three recruiting races as they narrow their final lists to three.

The Terrapins' have yet to secure a verbal commitment this season and despite two of their early big-board targets—Duck and cornerback Johnie Sowells—already committing elsewhere the Terrapins aren't overly concerned at this point.

"It's still relatively early; we've got positive traction with a lot of guys and while both Garrett and Johnnie would have been valuable contributors, we aren't pressed about their decisions. We'll keep scouting guys that want to be here," said Coach Leon when asked about recruiting in his first season at Maryland.
