Saturday, October 12, 2029 | Lane Stadium (Blacksburg, Virginia)

Week 7 Preview: at Virginia Tech (2-3, 1-0)

Synopsis
SMU's high octane offense finally reared its fearful head last week against Pittsburgh, with superstar quarterback Alonzo Cheeseman collecting 6 total touchdowns - three of which went to two-time Mackey Trophy winner, tight end Dwayne Kasay. The #1 team in the nation looks to continue their unblemished start to the season against the Virginia Tech Hokies.

The team has averaged 477.5yards gained per game, trailing only #9 Clemson and #2 Miami while averaging far and away the most rushing yards per game through the season behind their multi-back pronged attack. Virginia Tech's offense, on the other hand, is muddled somewhere in the lower end of the conference, while they have struggled with their turnover rate. Quarterback Orlando Verrier has struggled out of the gate with 6 interceptions thrown so far. The team's running game also needs some work.

Where the Hokies truly struggle is taking advantage of key opportunities, falling dead-last in the ACC with a 36% red zone percentage, where as SMU is converting at a 61% clip. They will need to shore up any mistakes and take advantage of all opportunities to stand a chance against the Mustangs.

Game Summary

Number 1 SMU entered Lane Stadium expecting a fight. Instead, they left with yet another statement. The Mustangs dismantled Virginia Tech 56-17 in Week 7, powered by a superstar performance from quarterback Alonzo Cheeseman and another opportunistic defensive showing that left the Hokies chasing the game from the second quarter onward.

The reigning Heisman winner was spectacular, carving up Virginia Tech's secondary for 444 passing yards and seven touchdowns, tying one of the most prolific single-game outputs in SMU history. He now takes hold of the career record for the ACC in passing touchdowns.

Cheeseman spread the ball across the offense, attacking mismatches and keeping the Hokies' defense off balance all afternoon. He hooked up with tight end Dwayne Kasay and wide receiver Eric DeLuca two times a piece, while targeting star wide receiver Marquis Avant early and often. The redshirt senior would finish the game with 10 catches for 122 yards and a touchdown himself.

The Mustangs forced three turnovers, including an interception by star cornerback Jamerson Cotton, who continues to anchor a secondary that has steadily improved as the season progresses.

With the win, SMU improves to 7-0 but the pressure remains close behind as they enter their bye week. Number 2 Miami continues to lurk in the national rankings and the ACC race, keeping the heat on SMU as the Mustangs chase both another conference title and a return to the College Football Playoffs.
