Super Bowl Rematch Goes To OT, Eagles Prevail On Hurts Touchdown

Image
Jalen Hurts rushing ability was the X-Factor for the Eagles as the two-time Super Bowl champion had 365 all purpose yards and 4 touchdowns including this 5-yard rushing touchdown that would be the difference in overtime.

Philadelphia, PA. - The Philadelphia Eagles received their Super Bowl rings in a pregame ceremony Thursday night at Lincoln Financial Field, then went out and did what champions do — found a way to win when it mattered most.

But make no mistake. The Pittsburgh Steelers made them earn every bit of it.

Philadelphia survived a 31-24 overtime victory over Pittsburgh in a game that told two very different stories. The first was the Eagles' resilience and Jalen Hurts' continued mastery of late-game situations. The second — and the one that will dominate the conversation heading into Week 2 — was just how competitive the Steelers were without their franchise quarterback.

Will Howard opened the night with a performance that briefly silenced the skeptics. The fourth-year pro was sharp and decisive on Pittsburgh's opening drive, completing 6 of 7 passes for 55 yards and capping the series with a one-yard touchdown strike to Ryan Williams to put the Steelers on the board first. It was exactly the kind of efficient, confident start Scheelhaase and his staff were hoping for.

As the game wore on, however, Philadelphia's defense began to solve the puzzle. Howard grew inconsistent, Pittsburgh's running game struggled to find any rhythm against the Eagles' ferocious front seven, and the Steelers offense increasingly found itself grinding for every yard. Yet somehow, despite those limitations, Pittsburgh never trailed by more than a touchdown. The defense — Brian Flores' defense — kept the Steelers in a game their offense had no business being in behind a menacing pass rush that tallied six sacks and multiple turnovers in the contest.

Entering the fourth quarter with a 24-21 lead, Pittsburgh appeared on the verge of one of the more stunning upsets of the young season. Then the Eagles' time of possession advantage began to take its toll. Philadelphia controlled the ball for 72 percent of the game, keeping Flores' unit on the field for extended stretches, and by the fourth quarter the Steelers defense was visibly running on fumes.

Hurts, cool and methodical as ever, took full advantage. The veteran quarterback orchestrated a masterful 13-play drive, mixing quick completions with timely scrambles and methodically working Philadelphia into field goal range before a third-down sack temporarily stalled the possession. It didn't matter. Jake Elliott — who has made a habit of breaking Pittsburgh's heart — drilled the game-tying field goal with 1:12 remaining, and a last-second heave from Howard to Ryan Williams fell just beyond his outstretched fingertips as time expired.

Overtime.

The Eagles won the coin toss and needed very little time to finish things off. Hurts converted a critical third-and-five from midfield with a 23-yard scramble that shifted the momentum decisively, then put the game away the same way he has put so many games away throughout his career — by spreading the Steelers into a four-wide formation and simply willing his way into the end zone.

Pittsburgh drove to midfield on their possession behind a remarkable fourth-and-eight conversion from Howard to DK Metcalf that briefly reignited hope, but Howard threw four consecutive incompletions to end the game and send the Eagles celebration into full swing.

For Scheelhaase, there was measured encouragement buried inside the disappointment.

"We're not in this business for moral victories," the first-year head coach said quietly in the postgame. "But to take the defending Super Bowl champions to overtime is an encouraging start, considering our circumstances."

The Steelers fall to 0-1 and travel to Denver next week to face the Broncos at Mile High.

Denver, CO. - A year ago the Pittsburgh Steelers didn't lose their second game of the season until Week 17. On Sunday in Denver, they dropped their second before September was half over.

The Denver Broncos survived a furious Pittsburgh comeback attempt to hand the Steelers a 33-27 defeat at Mile High, sending the reigning AFC Champions to an 0-2 start and intensifying the questions surrounding a franchise navigating uncharted territory without its franchise quarterback.

Denver wasted no time establishing control. Bo Nix was surgical in the first half, picking apart Pittsburgh's secondary with efficiency and rhythm on his way to 243 passing yards before halftime. The Broncos built a commanding 24-14 lead, with Pittsburgh's only genuine highlight of the first two quarters coming courtesy of the defense — linebacker Payton Wilson scooping up a fumble and returning it for a touchdown to keep the Steelers within striking distance.

The second half opened with more of the same. RJ Harvey hauled in Nix's second touchdown pass of the day to push the Denver lead to 30-14, and for a brief moment it appeared the afternoon might slip entirely out of Pittsburgh's hands. The Broncos' failed two-point conversion, however, provided a sliver of life — and Will Howard made them pay for it.

The second-year starter responded with one of his better drives of the young season, capping a methodical march down the field with a 17-yard strike to Pat Freiermuth before converting a two-point attempt to pull Pittsburgh within eight. Suddenly Mile High was quiet, and the Steelers defense delivered back-to-back three-and-outs to give the offense every opportunity to complete the comeback.

Then Howard threw the interception.

Targeting DK Metcalf on a crossing route, Howard never saw Riley Moss lurking underneath. The pick effectively ended Pittsburgh's momentum and gave Denver the breathing room they needed. Cam Little converted a 41-yard field goal to push the margin back to eleven, and although the Steelers continued to scratch and claw — Howard drove Pittsburgh into field goal range twice in the final minutes, Scheelhaase converting the first and going for it on fourth down on the second, coming up just short — the math simply never worked out.

A Bo Nix interception gave Pittsburgh one final possession with a chance to tie, but the Broncos defense held firm, draining Pittsburgh's remaining timeouts on the ensuing punt return before Patrick Surtain II batted away a fourth-down heave to Metcalf to seal the victory.

In the locker room afterward, it was T.J. Watt who spoke with the most candor.

"It's tough, because the offense fought until the end," Watt said. "But we need to do more as a defense to keep it closer. We can't give up 33 points and expect to win many games, regardless of who is under center."

Pittsburgh returns home next week to face the Cleveland Browns as Nathan Scheelhaase searches for his first win as an NFL head coach.

Can't give the Broncos free opportunities like that, especially with your defense seemingly asleep at the wheel like they are
