UCLA lands two of the top corner targets for the Cardinal as Zac DeCarvalo becomes first member of Stanford class

Grossmont (San Diego, Ca.) interior lineman Zac DeCarvalo has committed to the Stanford Cardinal following his official visit to Palo Alto as he is the inaugural member of Stanford's 2033 recruiting class.

DeCarvalo is a powerful athlete with a good frame at six-foot-four which this coaching staff has valued over the years. He's a well-rounded technician who plays tackle at high school but projects to play inside at the next level although Stanford has played some smaller tackles over the year if their feet is good enough.

A former wrestler, DeCarvalo's wrestling background shows up on his film with his ability to generate torque and maneuver players around at the line of scrimmage, especially in the running game. He can get a bit grabby, especially when dealing with smaller and lighter edge rushers which leads to DeCarvalo playing outside of his frame which is currently his biggest weakness.

While Stanford was able to close the deal with DeCarvalo, that wasn't the case with cornerbacks Roderick Whitaker and Deshawn John who both committed to UCLA. They were two of Stanford's top targets at corner, an area of need this cycle. This increases Stanford's pursuit of cornerback Raekwon Kendricks, a top fifteen corner in the country, who is also considering both SMU and Stanford.

The Victory Lap: Stanford survives the first round, freshmen watch and setting the stage for recruiting

The Stanford Cardinal head into their bye week with a 4-0 record after beating Fresno State 63-14 with three ranked wins in their pocket already over No. 19 Houston, No. 17 Michigan and No. 8 Missouri. October isn't a lot easier with road trips to South Bend and Tuscaloosa while hosting No. 23 Tennessee before ending it with a similar foe to Fresno State in New Mexico.

The offense is trending in a positive direction after a slow start to the year and despite not playing the entire game against Fresno State, Earl Nienhouse is now up to 254 yards per game, improving on his average from last year. The completion percentage and yards per attempt are slightly down but in general, the passing game does appear to be coming back online after the struggles against Michigan.

The running game is still finding its rhythm, particularly the rotation at running back. It looked for a while that it was going to be the Anthony Masifilo Show after his playoff run last year but the team has found more success with Rashawn Crouse softening up defenses first and then allowing Masifilo to close it out with explosive runs. Crouse has also joined in on the explosive days with long touchdown runs in the last two games.

The big question mark will be the defense. They looked great against Houston and Michigan but the Missouri game remains a puzzle although some of that can be attributed to the turnovers from the offense. The secondary has shown that they can create turnovers but they're also susceptible to big plays which brings a level of variance to their performances.

Which freshmen can make an impact down the line?
We've seen a couple of freshmen this season, especially against Fresno State where the Cardinal emptied the bench.

Damien Yeboah has been the team's returner, averaging 21.6 yards per kick return and 9.9 on punts. He saw some extensive action on offense against Fresno State but only brought in one of his three targets with the other being intercepted. We could see more of Yeboah down the line due to his versatility of playing all three receiver positions and should there be a long term injury, he could be the first name off the bench that gets put into rotation.

The freshmen with the most snaps on offense has been offensive tackle Ashton Bayless, whose played in three of the four games already and likely isn't looking at a redshirt. Even with Joe Nunn likely back, Bayless remains that fourth offensive tackle behind the starters and Carl Shakir.

Another freshman to watch is Marco Stick, whose gotten reps at both safety and nickel with 104 snaps on the season. Linebacker Darren Calmelat continues to be a key rotational piece with five tackles on the season and could carve out a larger role as the season progresses, especially as Stanford takes on teams with stronger running games.

Will Stanford land a five-star recruit?
Since landing five-star cornerback Kentrell Marvin three years ago, Stanford has yet to officially sign a five-star out of high school since Malik Marshall was technically a transfer from Notre Dame.

The Cardinal are in the running for three five-stars this cycle in offensive tackle Cooper Matakevich, receiver Rafael Kalil and running back Shon Eze. Kalil and Eze are the most likely as they are west coast guys with Kalil being from Hawaii and currently playing at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. With Marvin being from Hawaii and having the success he's had, that should help with Kalil's recruitment as well as Rodney Cookus' success as a similar prospect.

Stanford's success with running backs is clear although beating Oregon for Las Vegas' Eze will be tough. Eze's highlight tape is extremely fun to watch and when comparing him to Marshall, he's probably a better player at this same stage of their development. He's probably the most talented running back that Stanford has recruited in recent years and could be an instant impact player as he has the contact balance of a Rashawn Crouse with the elusiveness and top end speed of Masifilo.

Stanford isn't completely out of it with Matakevich as they have shown an ability to land top talent along the offensive line, just usually in the portal. They've also shown a willingness to play offensive linemen early and Matakevich would be one of those guys that could play right away.

Other interesting recruits include the Kendricks with cornerback Raekwon Kendricks and running back Colby Kendricks (no relation). Cornerback is a major need this cycle and Raekwon, outside of having a cool ass name, would be a major get for the Cardinal and while he might not be an immediate starter, the physical tools he possesses projects him to be a future star when he puts it together. Colby is an extremely productive running back at the high school level and while these are some concerns with his top end speed and how his game will translate, pairing him with Eze would give the Cardinal quite the running back haul and set them up nicely for the post-Crouse/Masifilo/Marshall/Winbush era.
