Maryland Exposes Suspect Northwestern In Blowout Fashion
Marcus Washington // TerpsvillePublished: October 28th, 2028

We're a few days before Halloween, but the Northwestern Wildcats played the part of a Scooby-Doo villain perfectly this season. That is, until the Maryland Terrapins played the role of the Mystery Inc and unmasked the Wildcats as mere victors of circumstance. Outside of a suspect Michigan squad—who lost again this weekend—and a USC squad who dismantled them, the Wildcats had yet to play an opponent over .500.

The Terrapins proved on Saturday that the Wildcats who got spanked 42-3 in Los Angeles are in fact the real Wildcats, repeating that score at SECU Stadium as Malik Washington tallied six touchdowns and the defense finally stepped up, led by Garrison Dobbs' 3.5 sacks.

Surprisingly enough, the Wildcats' first drive of the game actually passed midfield behind some timely runs by backup QB Jacob Bell, but the wiggle room he found early quickly evaporated as Dobbs ended the promising drive with his first sack of the game. The Northwestern punt pinned the Terps at their own 1-yard line.

14 plays and 100 yards later and Malik Washington sliced through the Northwestern front seven for the touchdown and the Terrapins rolled from there.

In his post-game presser Coach Leon praised Dobbs for being the difference maker that finally sparked a dominant outing from the defense.

Question One - Aisha Thompson (Terp Magazine): "Coach, it's been well documented that your defense has struggled to generate pressure. That changed today with seven sacks. Do you attribute the surge to your personnel changes defensively, or the fact that Northwestern was down two starting linemen and had a backup QB under center?"

Armando Leon: "It's pertinent to point out the context, Aisha, with Northwestern missing starters, but at the same time I think that's a disservice to our guys. We've been moving Garrison around; and round of applause for him, he's taken each new role with gusto and the type of determination that's contagious. He started beating his man and forcing Jacob to move the pocket, and that's when everything started coming together. As I said, it's worth noting the injuries for Northwestern, but regardless; without him moving the pocket by his presence alone, I don't think we break through like this."

Question Two - Felix Gatoson (The Daily Northwestern): "Your team took a 35-3 lead right at the end of the third quarter. Northwestern pulled their starters at that point, yet you did not. Any reason why?"

Armando Leon: "As noted earlier, we made some personnel changes leading up to this contest. It was more making sure that everyone was comfortable in their roles and getting valuable reps in low-pressure situations, before they're thrown into the fire again. Coach Candle felt a bit slighted when we spoke at midfield, but just as I'm assuring you, I assured him, this was more about making sure my guys knew their roles, than running up the score to 'aura farm' as the kids would say."

Question Three - Ryan Parker (Big Ten Network): "With the win over Michigan losing luster as the Wolverines continue to struggle in Big Ten play, how important was it for your squad to notch another ranked win—your 3rd of the season—to build your resume in Year 1?"

Armando Leon: "I hate the narrative that when a premier program loses a few games, suddenly it isn't as impressive of a win. I heard the same thing last year when Oregon State beat Oregon, it was a landmark moment at first, but when they were 7-5 at season's end, no one batted an eye. Regardless of how they're performing this year, Michigan is loaded with talent. To beat them, in their own house, is a watershed moment for our team, regardless of what the mainstream media thinks."

•••

This was the kind of effort our team needed. Frankly, I don't care if the sacks are a result of the personnel changes, the Northwestern injury situation, or the lunar cycle. We finally broke through in a big way and hopefully, this is the type of performance that inspires the team down the stretch.

You saw the direct result of Leon's pass rush finally getting home in the game. Two interceptions, 183 passing yards total, and barely over 200 total yards of offense for the Wildcats. That's a complete game by the defense and it all starts up front.

I'm hoping Dobbs' performance is based on his role and not the injuries, because he looked like an absolute game wrecker on the inside. If he can keep up the pressure rate in the latter half of the season, it's going to have a dramatic effect on our results.

I don't want to overhype one game, but this could be the point we look back and say was the start of a dominant finish for the Terps.

Flat out lies. The win looks less impressive if the team ends up being rubbish at the end of the season. Nobody is celebrating being a big club when everyone else is beating them too.

We see the lies coach, don’t be trying to trick us.

how it is lies!??! Michigan is a program that routinely ranks in the top 10 for recruiting, Maryland does not. So for us to get a win over them, in their house, is great for our program. h8rs gonna h8

2028 Week Ten Preview: #19 Maryland (6-2) @ Indiana (4-4)
Marcus Washington // TerpsvillePublished: November 3rd, 2028

Ladies and gentlemen, we have arrived! After their third AP-ranked win of the season, the Maryland Terrapins have officially cracked the rankings, coming in at 19th after their win over the previously 17th-ranked Northwestern Wildcats.

Our ascension to the top 25 programs in the nation couldn't have come at a better time, as the Terrapins and first-year head coach Armando Leon head to Bloomington, Indiana to face former head coach Mike Locksley. Locksley left the Terps after last season's 6-6 campaign to replace the retired Curt Cignetti, and after a hot start, going 4-1 and cracking the AP-rankings themselves, have cooled off a bit with three straight losses.

In an added wrinkle, former Hoosier offensive coordinator Mike Shanahan—who was passed up to replace Cignetti—is making his return to Bloomington as the offensive coordinator with vengeance on his mind. In the latest "Inside the Shell," Coach Leon will address what the new ranking means—or doesn't—for the Terrapins and how Shanahan is handling his return to Bloomington.

Inside the Shell

MW: "The Maryland Terrapins are back in the spotlight and it's all thanks to the man right here, Coach Armando Leon. Coach, how is the team handling the new number beside their name?"

AL: "I can't take all the credit for this season, Marcus, there are a lot of moving pieces that have all come together for us to start off 6-2. But that number means nothing if it's gone by the end of the season. The boys know that, the coaching staff knows it; we can't let off the gas yet. There are still games to win and while it's probably a long shot to make the Big Ten conference championship, with us already having two conference losses, if we keep performing we're going to put the CFP committee in a real uncomfortable spot come November."

MW: "You've preached your entire career about not worrying about the circumstances and just treating each game with the same importance. How hard is that going to be for Coach Shanahan as he makes his return to Bloomington after how he left? And additionally, how is it being handled by the players going against the man that recruited a large number of them?"

AL: "Coach Shanahan and I have talked extensively about the game plan going into this contest. He feels slighted and he has every right to be, but he also knows that a win is the most important thing for this club. Obviously being the offensive coordinator, he has a big impact on the result of the game. But, the challenge will be balancing the emotions and not going for a highlight-reel play every down. He knows that, and more importantly the team knows that. We're locked in to get this win for Coach Shanahan, and ourselves, while still playing our game."

MW: "The defense finally came alive last week against Northwestern. I'm not here to debate what was the direct cause of that—game planning or injuries. What does the defense need to do for a repeat performance?"

AL: "Just keep getting after it, Marcus. Garrison did a great job pushing up the middle and everything else flowed from there. We just need one guy to push the pocket and it disrupts everything on the offense. Bryce is a great quarterback with speed out of the backfield, so with that we have to stay disciplined in our gap integrity on top of it. It'll be a good chess match for sure."

•••

I'll be honest, this feels like the perfect trap game for our Terrapins. An emotional game for not only Coach Shanahan, but many of the key members of this club. Add in the emotions of being ranked for the first time this season and going on the road for only the third time this year, and we're ripe for the picking.

Maybe last year's Terps, but not this year. I firmly believe Coach Leon has this team focused on a bigger goal and despite the emotions, I think we see a game closer to the Northwestern win, then the Ohio State loss.

30 Maryland, 17 Indiana.

Grass Isn't Always Greener; Maryland Routs Former Coach In Bloomington
Marcus Washington // TerpsvillePublished: November 4th, 2028

The Maryland Terrapins faced off against their former coach Mike Locksley and the Indiana Hoosiers in a rollercoaster game that ultimately saw them secure a 41-24 victory in Bloomington.

The Terrapins raced out to a 21-0 lead behind a stout defense and over 100 yards by Iverson Howard, but nearly let their emotions get the best of them. The Terrapins were flying high and looking to keep piling on the points after the Hoosiers finally scrapped together a field goal drive to make it 21-3 midway through the 2nd quarter. Then things started to get away from Malik Washington.

The senior QB was intercepted on back-to-back drives, leading to a pair of touchdowns for the Hoosiers who were suddenly only trailing by four points at the half.

Whatever Coach Leon said to his team at the break worked. The Terrapins rounded back into form and put up 17 straight points before an explosive run by Jahlil Hageman—who had 110 yards and two touchdowns in the contest—kept the Hoosiers from being completely shut out in the second half.

After the victory, Coach Leon got candid about the halftime adjustments while acknowledging the emotion that played a factor early.

•••

Question One - Aisha Thompson (Terp Magazine): "Coach, your team was rolling midway through the second quarter, but suddenly a pair of Malik Washington interceptions put the Hoosiers right back in the contest. What was said in the locker room that calmed the team down as they put away their former coach in the second half?"

Armando Leon: "If I tell you everything that was said, Aisha, we're getting shut down pretty quickly. We talked about keeping our emotions in check and not making the game about any one person and wanting revenge. And that was for everybody, not just a single player. We were feeling ourselves after the big lead and thought the game was wrapped up, got sloppy, and nearly screwed around and found out. Once we got our heads where they needed to be, things quickly turned around."

Question Two - Richard Biggsbee (Indiana Daily Student) "Despite the loss, Jahlil Hageman had some huge runs in this game and put the lone second-half points on the board for the Hoosiers. What about his game presented a problem for your defense—which is normally stout against the run—and what adjustments do you need to make going forward?"

Armando Leon: "Fundamentals, Richard. Too often we were going for the big hit and allowed him to match our physicality and keep on trucking. He broke at least six tackles in the contest, so he was running hard and fighting. Props to him. We got ours in the end with that forced fumble, scoop, and score by Isaiah. I don't think he's going to try hurdling anyone in the near future, that's for sure."

Question Three - Ryan Parker (Big Ten Network): "Coach, I couldn't help but notice—there was no post-game handshake between you and Mike Locksley. Is that just emotions running high after facing his former team, or is there bad blood there?"

Armando Leon: "I'd imagine there were a lot of emotions on his side, watching his former players stunt on him like that. Probably put some doubt in your mind, why couldn't I get the same results with this talent? Or I would assume—don't want to put words in his mouth. As far as bad blood, you can ask Mike about that, Ryan. If he says we're good, then we're good. If not? He knows where my office is."

•••

Coach Leon brought the heat to the post-game presser and if anyone questions where the Terrapins are getting their edge from these days, look no further than the man in charge. Coach Leon talks the talk and then backs it up. And if for some reason the results don't match? He's the first one taking ownership on the podium.

I'm not going to name any names, but we'll just say it's a refreshing look for our head coach. And I'll leave it at that.

The Terrapins nearly let their emotions get the best of them before the half, then Coach Leon pulled the troops in, hit 'em with some tough love, and they righted the ship.

The most encouraging part of this win? The defense showed up again. Outside a few big plays on the ground to Jahlil, they forced turnovers (3), tallied sacks (4), and disrupted the passing lanes. As long as the offense can keep from repeating the trend of multiple turnovers, that's a recipe for success any day.

I'd imagine there were a lot of emotions on his side, watching his former players stunt on him like that. Probably put some doubt in your mind, why couldn't I get the same results with this talent? Or I would assume—don't want to put words in his mouth. As far as bad blood, you can ask Mike about that, Ryan. If he says we're good, then we're good. If not? He knows where my office is."

Pussy comment. He talked shit, you got yours and now trying to brush it off. Man up and own it. He’s a twit and you have no respect for the man so he does not deserve a handshake.

He didn't want to make the game about himself after an emotional win for his boys. #teamfirst
