Stanford senior defensive tackle Shaquille Pullard has played in forty-six games for the Cardinal in relative anonymity with 12.5 career sacks and had he gotten his thirteenth, he might have been a legend. Instead, Notre Dame quarterback David Hammer escaped through his grasp and threw the touchdown that would ultimately be one of the final nails in the coffins of Stanford's 43-37 loss to the Irish.

It's Bubba Mack's first loss to Notre Dame and its a gut wrenching one as Stanford came back from the early deficit, overcame two defensive touchdowns and was still in position to win the game twice; once in regulation when the offense initially came out for the two-point conversion to go for the win but ultimately chose to kick the extra point and again in overtime where sacking Hammer on fourth down would have won them the game.

After the game, Mack said that the fact that the team had already converted two two-point conversions already and were down to their third two-point conversion play led to the decision to go into overtime.

"I felt like our defense was playing pretty well and liked our chances to get a stop," Mack added.

And they almost did which is why the focus, rightly so, needs to be on the offense for the 16-0 hole and spotting Notre Dame fourteen of their thirty points in regulation.

The slow starts have been a thing since the beginning of the season, scoring ten points against Houston in the first half when they eventually finished with forty five. Ten points against Michigan in a two-point win and zero points in the first quarter against even Fresno State.

Stanford won't get to lick their wounds
The Cardinal travel into Tuscaloosa next week, likely on primetime, in a game that was set to be a clash against two undefeated teams.

While their resume is shaky, talent wise, Alabama is the best team Stanford has faced this season and certainly the best defense. The Tide are also heading into a bye after next weekend so their entire focus will be on beating Stanford, getting a well deserved break after six straight games to begin the year and then finish off the last final five games of the season.

Alabama has the top ranked scoring defense in the SEC, top three total defense and rushing defense. The only thing they are average at is passing defense which is skewed by their large leads in most games which they offset with a top five pass rush in the SEC and the second most interceptions.

A bouquet of roses for the defense
Lost in the loss is the outstanding performance by the defense against Notre Dame.

The only gave up sixteen points in regulation and had ten teams sacks led by Percy Cadet who continues to have the type of junior season that will get him drafted. Pullard, who unfortunately will be remembered for that missed tackle, also had a great game with 1.5 sacks and two tackles for loss.

The Irish averaged nearly two yards per carry on the ground and as a whole, they were held to 5.2 yards per play and converted just three of their fifteen third downs. In any other game, that performance usually gets you a win but the turnovers were just too much for this defense to overcome and they frankly ran out of gas in overtime.

Cardinal beat out former ACC foe SMU for Prosper's Walter Joy

One of the top targets on Stanford's recruiting board is making the trip out west as Texas' Walter Joy has committed to the Cardinal, picking Stanford over in-state SMU.

Joy, who is ranked at the 29th ranked right tackle in the class and a top 45 player in the state of Texas, is listed at six-foot-five and currently weighs under 300 pounds but has a frame that could get into the low 310s.

A third-year starter for 6A powerhouse Prosper High School, Joy is a technically sound offensive lineman that can play either tackle spots or even potentially guard if needed with his play strength. He can get beaten with speed at times which is why a move to guard could potentially be in his future but he projects to be a right tackle, ideally, in Stanford's offense based on how they've deployed similar prospects in the past. He does a good job of getting to the second level and plays with a lot of physicality which flashes in his tape as he has some nastiness to him when it comes to finishing blocks.

The Cardinal would love to pair him with five-star Cooper Matakevich which would give them a really good haul along the offensive line.

Stanford adds another California defensive prospect to their class in safety Bernie Stead

Three-star safety Bernie Stead has committed to the Stanford Cardinal, becoming the sixth member of Stanford's recruiting class.

Stanford's class is currently ranked top seven with one four-star signing in Walter Joy and five three stars, all from the state of California which has been a key focus for Stanford this season during this recruiting cycle. Stead is from the San Diego area, playing at Helix Charter.

A box safety type similar to Tony Floyd, the biggest question mark surrounding Stead is will he able to cover at the Power 4 level as a move to linebacker, unlike Floyd, is out of the question for him due to his slight frame at six-foot-one and 181 pounds. He instead projects as a special teams level player who can potentially grow into a rotational role for the Cardinal.
