Despite 4th Quarter Scare, Terps Keep Shuffling Along
Marcus Washington // TerpsvillePublished: November 18th, 2028

The Minnesota Golden Gophers were supposed to be steamrolled by the Maryland Terrapins on their quest for the program's first ever College Football Playoff berth and after a 24-0 1st half, it seemed like the truck would keep on trucking right through St. Paul. But credit to the Gophers, they kept fighting.

It started small, forcing a long field goal to open the 3rd quarter that Donald Byler missed. Then a fourth-down stop on the next drive as Malik Washington was drilled just in time to alter the pass to Emanuel Ross. But it was a red zone interception on the third drive of the second half for the Terrapins that finally sparked the Gophers.

They marched down the field following the interception and Jackson Kollock found tight end Julian Johnson for an 8-yard score. After another three-and-out by the Terps offense, Kollock again led a scoring drive capped by Johnson—who trucked safety La'khi Roland on his way to the score.

Suddenly, it was 24-14 and Huntington Bank Stadium was rocking.

Freshman Paul Colon silenced it with a 24-yard rushing touchdown, then Malik Washington put it out of its misery with a 44-yard dart to Emanuel Ross as the Terrapins rallied for the 38-14 victory.

In his post-game press conference, Coach Leon was less than thrilled about the lack of second-half execution, but praised the Gophers team and fans for never giving up.

•••

Question One - Erick Leifson (The Minnesota Daily): "Despite the lopsided score at the half, the Gophers seemed to give you more than you bargained for out of the break. What adjustments did Coach PJ Fleck make to counter what had been working for you, and what adjustments did you need to make to keep it from snowballing?"

Armando Leon: "We came out of the second half flat and the Gophers came out physical. It seemed they decided at the half that if we were going to get points, we'd have to endure being mauled up and down the field. And credit to them; they took care of business. It felt like we were just out there going through the motions, while the Gophers were plotting an upheaval. Once they got some momentum, the stadium started rocking, these passionate fans were back in it, and we were in some trouble. We decided as a team to take the air out of the ball for a minute, our receivers were just getting hammered anytime the ball was near them, and rely on the big boys up front to plow the highway. They did, Paul took advantage, and once we struck back it broke their spirit. But if we hadn't rallied after they made it 24-14? Whole different story."

Question Two - Aisha Thompson (Terp Magazine): "Emanuel Ross and Malik Washington have been on fire lately, combining for seven touchdowns over the last four games. Is there any concern that the offense is becoming too focused on Ross, who had more than half of Malik's passing yards today?"

Armando Leon: "I think that's a fair point you could make, if it wasn't working. It's not like we've been relying on Emanuel to get explosive plays and we're struggling outside of that; I think it's the contrary. We have generally been very balanced offensively with who catches balls. JT Taggart, Za'Ron Collins, Bryce Randolph, and our running backs all get involved regularly. I think that has actually opened up more room for Emanuel to get into space and make some magic happen. I have full confidence in Malik as a quarterback and Coach Shanahan as a play-caller that if a team doubles Emanuel to take him out of the game, we'll make the necessary adjustments."

Question Three - Ryan Parker (Big Ten Network): "Your defense gave up over 200 passing yards alone in the second half, and over 300 on the day. Despite that, you still were able to total six sacks, multiple TFLs, and an interception. Is that an acceptable balance for you with how this scheme is orchestrated?"

Armando Leon: "You don't want to give up 300 passing yards, but to give you a blunt answer, we don't mind it in the grand scheme of things. We play aggressive, we get sacks, we force turnovers. You can't win every battle and on occasion, the offense is going to make a play. Before their first touchdown, Isaiah Toner made a gorgeous leaping grab over Brayden. That's a ball I think Brayden wins most of the time, he won on a jump ball later for an interception to prove my point; so those are plays you have to live with. I'd much rather be aggressive and make moves to actively impact the game, than to sit passive and hope they make a mistake. Proactive, not reactive."

Coach Leon defended the high-usage rate—to use a basketball term loosely—of Emanuel Ross, but when he and Malik weren't clicking in the third quarter is when the wheels started to fall off. I'm not saying it's a concern right now, but I don't know if I 100% share in Coach Leon's assessment that the team is prepared to pivot should things get hairy.

However, that is a problem for a different day. For now, we're 9-2, marching towards uncharted territory, and moving Fearlessly Forward.

2028 Week Twelve Preview: Michigan State (7-4) @ #9 Maryland (9-2)
Marcus Washington // TerpsvillePublished: November 24th, 2028

As if the potentially final home game of Malik Washington's career wasn't exciting enough, the stakes have dramatically increased with the Terrapins' sudden surge up the rankings. Now sitting at 9th, the Terrapins cannot afford a loss this late in the season, with a Big Ten Championship berth a distant dream after all three teams ahead of Maryland won last week, as a loss would surely drop them below the threshold of securing an at-large bid.

The problem? The Michigan State Spartans are more than capable of shattering the Terrapins' dreams. The Spartans come into a hostile SECU Stadium on Senior Night riding a three-game win streak with backup QB Connor Slack finding his groove after being thrust into the starting role following John Allgeier's broken leg earlier in the season.

After we see how both Big Ten foes match up, we'll take it to "Inside the Shell" with Coach Leon to see how he plans to slow down the versatile Slack, the increasingly slim Big Ten Championship odds, and their current projected CFP matchup.

Inside the Shell

MW: "As if Senior Night for a number of Terps, including Malik Washington and his quest for the Big Ten touchdown record, wasn't excitement enough, Maryland is now in a win-and-they're-in situation with the College Football Playoff. Does that impact how you guys have game planned for Senior Night, especially considering Malik's quest for the record book?"

AL: "In the grand scheme of things, not really, Marcus. The goal is to win the game; rain, sleet, or snow. We want to get Malik that record, but not if we lose ourselves in the process. Regardless of if we win or lose tomorrow, we've got one more game to play to get him that record. I do expect him to put on one of his best performances of the seaso; he's motivated to show these Maryland fans how thankful he is for their support over the last four years. But we aren't going to be throwing it four times from the one-yard line just to get a touchdown pass. Maybe just three."

MW: "For the Terrapins to make the Big Ten Championship game it would take losses by both Ohio State to Michigan and Penn State to UCLA. "The Game" between Ohio State and Michigan kicks off at 12PM and you'll be taking the field around 4PM, meaning you'll very likely know the results of that contest and thus, where you stand. Would you prefer to know where you sit, or rather be left in the dark until the dust settled?"

AL: "From a distraction standpoint, you'd rather not know, execute your game, then let the chips fall where they may. But a downside of the technological age we live in is that will never happen. So we take it for what it is. Making the Big Ten Championship game would be a nice token on this season, but we're in the Playoff with a win, regardless. That's what we're focused on."

MW: "Let's play devil's advocate for a minute. If everything stays chalk from this point forward, you would be heading to Hard Rock Stadium to face the Miami Hurricanes in the 1st-round—a team that was undefeated until last week. How prepared do you think your squad is to lock horns with some of the other goliaths of the sport in the Playoffs?"

AL: "I mean, I would argue we already have, no? The Big Ten is a premier conference, the 1B to the SEC's 1A in my eyes. Is Miami a premier program? Obviously, but are they better than Ohio State? Oregon? Penn State? I don't think so. We hung with every team we've played this year, I'm confident we will contend with whoever we line up against."

•••

Of all the games since our loss to Ohio State, this feels the most like a trap game. A lot of emotion on our side, from Senior Night to the playoff stakes, and the Spartans aren't a pushover. They're talented, they're feeling themselves, and it looks like they've finally adjusted to Connor Slack under center. He's more athletic than John Allgeier and they're finally using that to their advantage.

Three weeks ago, I'd say this was a runaway victory to finish the season. Now, I'm a bit tempered in my opinion. I still think we win, but I don't think this is a game the boys can waltz in and think they're going to have their way. If we know one thing, it's that teams love playing spoiler. And I'm sure Michigan State would love nothing more than to knock us out of the Playoffs.

28 Maryland, 17 Michigan State. I think it's close until the fourth quarter, and Malik Washington proves to be the difference.

Malik Washington Makes Senior Night Statement With Demolition Of Spartans
Marcus Washington // TerpsvillePublished: November 24th, 2028

The Michigan State Spartans came into SECU Stadium looking to shatter the hopes and dreams of Terrapin fans everywhere with a statement victory. Malik Washington had other plans. Despite a pair of 1st-quarter interceptions, the senior playing his last game at SECU Stadium delivered a masterclass performance in a downpour, slinging five touchdowns and tallying over 400 total yards in the 47-3 Maryland victory.

The Terrapins started the day off with a brisk six-play drive that ended with a JT Taggart touchdown, but the next two unraveled in the red zone. On both drives Washington's crisp passing led the Terps into scoring distance, but then off-balance throws were snagged on back-to-back possessions by the Spartans. The first interception turned into points, as the slant route was picked off on the one-yard line by Dontae Keys, but quickly turned into a safety by the defense. The second, however, kept the game from being a shutout. John Gouevia jumped a screen pass intended for Emanuel Ross and bolted 55 yards until he was dragged down from behind.

The Spartans were unable to gain a first down, but thanks to the return were in range for a 45-yard field goal by Jesse Rodriguez.

The Terps quickly found their groove again after the pair of turnovers, turning in 21 points in the second quarter as they built a 30-3 halftime lead.

The onslaught continued in the second half as Coach Leon left his starters in deep into the fourth quarter, something he explained in his post-game press conference as getting Malik one last touchdown in front of the fans, rather than running up the score.

•••

Question One - Aisha Thompson (Terp Magazine): "Coach Leon, what do you say to critics questioning why you're leaving Malik Washington and the starters in the game with a 34-point lead in the fourth quarter? And to follow up, did Coach Helton have any choice words when you met to shake hands post-game?"

Armando Leon: "Not at all, Aisha. I let Coach Helton know pregame, if it was a blowout I was going to leave Malik in for a final touchdown drive regardless. I think he earned the right to leave the field with the crowd cheering for one final Washington touchdown. Helton understood; it wasn't about disrespect. Once Malik got his final touchdown pass in the 4th, I pulled him to a standing ovation and we ran the ball from there on out."

Question Two - Jimmy Conrad (The State News): "Michigan State had been rolling coming into this season finale. What do you think played a bigger factor in their struggles; your defense, or the weather?"

Armando Leon: "They definitely made a concerted effort to establish the ground game, which is out of character for their offense. So I think the weather played a factor there, but at the end of the day we tallied six sacks, and nine tackles for loss. You'd think they'd try and switch up at some point, but aside from 3rd-and-long it never really happened."

Question Three - Ryan Parker (Big Ten Network): "Following Ohio State's loss to Michigan, the window was suddenly creaking open on a potential Maryland Big Ten Conference Championship burst. But the Penn State Nittany Lions 4th-quarter comeback over the UCLA Bruins slammed it shut like a gale-force wind. You knew the results of the Penn State game before the half; did you share it with your team? And if so, what were those conversations like?"

Armando Leon: "We talked about it as a team so it wasn't a shock when we saw it on the Jumbotron later, Ryan. It was a bit disappointing, no doubt, even though we knew it was an outside shot. You see Ohio State go down and you think 'it's all lining up.' But according to my staff there is still a shot. Penn State doesn't hold a tiebreaker over us, so it could come down to point differentials or head-to-head records. I haven't dug into any of that, but I'm hearing we're not completely eliminated yet. But back to the question. The conversations were just about focusing on what lies ahead. We had a 27-point lead and if we keep that lead, we're in the Playoff. Then we move from there."

•••

Early on, it looked like Malik Washington's eagerness to put on a show for the home crowd bit him. But the senior did what experienced players do, compartmentalize and move on to the next play. Once he shook off those early interceptions, our man was rolling.

Now, we sit back and wait. Because despite Coach Leon's optimism on tiebreakers, I don't think we edge the Nittany Lions for the berth. The two schools Penn State lost to this year—Nebraska and Oregon—we did not play. And they beat the Ohio State Buckeyes 26-20 earlier this year, giving them a leg up on one of our defeats. I haven't dug into the annals of the rules yet either, but from my brief research it looks like the Nittany Lions will get a rematch with the Ducks.

So now, with Senior Night behind us, we await the announcement from the College Football Playoff committee. We're most assuredly in, the question is now: where are we going?
