#15 Hawaii Opens Season with Statement Win Over #21 UNLV, 37–17
Honolulu, HI -- Behind a dominant performance from quarterback
Dermaricus Davis, Hawai‘i opened its season with a convincing 37–17 victory over #21 UNLV, the third straight win for UH in the Island Showdown.
Davis was electric throughout the night, earning Player of the Game honors after throwing for 363 yards and two touchdowns while completing 71.4% of his passes. He also added a rushing touchdown, orchestrating an offense that consistently stretched the Rebels’ defense.
UNLV threatened to strike first after moving the ball efficiently on its opening possession, but the Hawai‘i defense delivered the game’s first pivotal moment. A red-zone interception by corner
Dajon Hinton halted the drive and shifted momentum toward the home sideline.
The Warriors capitalized shortly after.
Davis led a steady drive that ended with a 10-yard touchdown pass to
Nate Roberts, giving Hawai‘i an early 7–0 lead and igniting the Honolulu crowd.
UNLV answered in the second quarter with a 42-yard field goal from
Rickie Rosenfels, but Hawai‘i quickly responded.
Davis extended the lead himself with a 13-yard touchdown run, showing off his mobility before the Rebels countered with a 1-yard rushing score by
Kamran Williams to trim the margin.
But just before halftime, Davis struck again through the air. He found
Kezion Dia-Johnson on a 13-yard touchdown pass with just 14 seconds remaining, sending Hawai‘i into the locker room with a 21–10 advantage and full momentum.
The Warriors wasted no time creating distance after the break.
Kicker
Sean McFarland drilled a 52-yard field goal, and shortly afterward
Dylan Lee punched in a 4-yard touchdown run to push the lead to 31–10 midway through the third quarter.
UNLV tried to mount a comeback in the fourth quarter when Williams scored his second rushing touchdown, but Hawaii’s special teams sealed the outcome. McFarland added two more field goals — from 35 and 36 yards — to put the finishing touches on the 20-point victory.
