MISPLACED ANGER
USF dominates ECU in followup to ND heartbreaker

Saturday September 22, 2029 | 7:00 PM | Raymond James Stadium | Tampa, Florida

Tampa, Florida - It didn’t take long for South Florida to make a statement against ECU and once they did, there was no slowing the avalanche.

From the opening possession, the Bulls dictated everything, taking a 7-0 lead with a Locklan Hewlett to Dalton Sahara touchdown pass on their first possession of the game. On East Carolina’s very first offensive series, Keon Brents jumped a route and came away with an interception, immediately flipping the field and igniting the home crowd. That takeaway set up a quick score, and moments later USF had surged to a 14–0 lead, establishing a tone ECU never recovered from. Brents wasn’t finished either, turning in a dominant all-around performance with 3.0 sacks, three tackles for loss, and the game’s defining early turnover.

That early momentum only snowballed.

South Florida’s offense, led by Hewlett, methodically dismantled the Pirates. Hewlett completed 38 of 47 passes for 347 yards and three touchdowns, spreading the ball to a deep group of weapons, including Lyle Dragos (10 catches, 135 yards) and Sahara, who hauled in two short touchdown receptions.

But it was the final minute of the first half that completely broke the game open.

After controlling much of the second quarter, USF delivered a crushing late-half surge. With 58 seconds remaining, George Shembo powered into the end zone to extend the lead to 28–0. On ECU’s very next play from scrimmage, Armon Chambers stepped in front of a pass for an interception, setting up another short field. The Bulls wasted no time capitalizing, striking again moments later to score twice in under a minute and carry a commanding 35–0 lead into halftime.

Any hope of a second-half response from East Carolina was erased almost instantly.

The Bulls’ defense forced a quick three-and-out to open the third quarter, and on the very next play, Connor Suggs delivered the knockout blow. Taking a handoff and bursting through the line, Suggs exploded down the sideline for a 78-yard touchdown run, stretching the lead to 42–0 and draining whatever fight remained from the Pirates. Suggs finished with a monster day, 197 yards and three touchdowns on just 16 carries, averaging over 12 yards per attempt.

East Carolina finally showed signs of life late in the third quarter, driving into scoring range. But even that opportunity was cut short by the relentless USF front. Jamerson Harris came screaming off the edge, dropping ECU quarterback Jeremy Hecklinski for a drive-killing sack back near the 30-yard line. The Pirates were forced to settle for a Rico Bitonio field goal, making it 49–3 instead of a potential touchdown.

The fourth quarter brought one of ECU’s few highlights, albeit briefly.

With USF again threatening, Hewlett’s pass intended for Sahara was tipped into the air and intercepted by safety Alani Day, who turned it into a spectacular 101-yard pick-six, one of the longest returns you’ll see. It was a rare spark for the Pirates, but it did little to change the outcome.

“We thought there might’ve been a little contact early on that pick-six play. It looked like Sahara got hit before the ball got there,” Coach Porter said. “But at the same time, we talk all the time about controlling what we can control. We didn’t want to slow the game down or lose momentum chasing a challenge. Our guys responded the right way with that next play mentality we talk about and we just kept pushing forward.”

South Florida answered shortly after, with Hewlett finding Sahara once more for a two-yard touchdown to cap the scoring and seal a dominant 56–10 victory.

The numbers told the full story of the mismatch. USF racked up 561 yards of offense, averaged 7.7 yards per play, and converted an astounding 84% of its third downs.

Meanwhile, the Bulls’ defense suffocated ECU, holding them to just 134 total yards and forcing two interceptions while piling up pressure throughout.

For East Carolina, it was a long afternoon defined by missed opportunities and relentless pressure. Hecklinski managed just 75 passing yards with two interceptions, while the run game never got going, finishing with negative yardage.

But this game belonged to South Florida, and more specifically, to Keon Brents and a defense that set the tone from the very first snap.

USF’s dominant performance felt like a statement rooted in response and resilience. After a frustrating loss to Notre Dame a week ago, the Bulls came out with urgency, edge, and a clear intent to reset the tone of their season. From the opening defensive stand to the relentless offensive execution, this was a team playing with something to prove, and they delivered in emphatic fashion. If there were any lingering doubts after last week, they were erased under the lights in Tampa with a performance that showcased both their explosiveness and their ability to finish.

USF POSTGAME REPORT
#16 USF 56 – East Carolina 10
Image

Offense
–USF responded in dominant fashion following last week’s loss, overwhelming East Carolina 56–10 behind a relentless and explosive offensive performance.
–Quarterback Locklan Hewlett was outstanding, completing 38 of 47 passes for 347 yards and three touchdowns while efficiently commanding the offense throughout the night.
–The Bulls set the tone early, capitalizing on a short field after a Keon Brents interception to grab a quick lead, then continued to build momentum with balanced play calling and tempo.
–Connor Suggs delivered another statement performance, rushing for 197 yards and three touchdowns on just 16 carries. His 78-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second half effectively broke the game open and drained any remaining energy from the Pirates. Suggs earned the Offensive Player of the Week nod for the American Conference for his efforts.
–USF’s passing attack was equally effective, with Lyle Dragos hauling in 10 catches for 135 yards and a touchdown, while Gerald Camarda and Joshua Barr consistently moved the chains.
–Dalton Sahara added two short touchdown receptions, including one early and another late to cap the scoring.
–The Bulls finished with 561 yards of offense, averaging 7.7 yards per play and converting 11 of 13 third downs in a near-flawless execution.
–The only blemish came on a tipped pass interception returned 101 yards for a touchdown by ECU’s Alani Day, but USF quickly responded and maintained full control.
–“We challenged our guys to respond this week, and they answered in every phase,” Head Coach DJ Porter said. “That’s the standard we expect.
Defense
–USF’s defense set the tone from the opening possession and never let up, holding East Carolina to just 134 yards of total offense.
–Keon Brents delivered one of the most impactful performances of the season, recording 4 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, 3.0 sacks, and an interception on ECU’s first possession that helped spark an early 14–0 lead. Brents was rewarded by being named the American Conference Defensive Player of the Week.
–The Bulls continued to create havoc, forcing another turnover late in the first half when Armon Chambers intercepted a pass to set up a short field. USF converted quickly, scoring twice in the final minute to take a commanding 35–0 halftime lead.
–Jamerson Harris provided a key moment in the third quarter, sacking ECU quarterback Jeremy Hecklinski in Bulls territory to force a long field goal instead of a potential touchdown.
–The defensive front consistently disrupted ECU’s rhythm, limiting the Pirates to just 3.1 yards per play and forcing multiple negative plays throughout the game.
–Devin Nowell, Nick Jones, and Jathan Hatch helped anchor a disciplined secondary that allowed little separation and capitalized on opportunities.
Special Teams
–Kicker Dom Bragg remained perfect, converting all eight extra points in the game.
–Punter Dorian McSurdy was rarely needed but contributed a solid effort when called upon, booting the ball deep into ECU territory on his lone punt and securing touchbacks on even of his nine kick offs.
–Elton York and Richard Boireau provided steady field position in the return game, combining for 68 kick return yards.
Quotables
We wanted to come out and set the tone early, especially after last week,” – DJ Porter
That’s the kind of defense we know we can be. Keon was everywhere tonight,” – Armon Chambers
Once I saw the lane open, I knew I had to finish it,” – Connor Suggs
We were locked in. Everybody did their job,” – Locklan Hewlett
News
–USF improves to 4–1 on the season and opens conference play with a dominant victory.
–Connor Suggs continues to strengthen his Heisman case, now leading the country with 649 rushing yards and nine touchdowns on the season.
–The Bulls outgained East Carolina 561–134 and held the Pirates to just seven first downs.
–USF recorded multiple sacks and two interceptions, continuing a strong defensive trend early in the season.
–The win serves as a strong bounce-back performance after last week’s narrow loss to #6 Notre Dame.
Recruiting
-Sidney Purvis (RG – Miami, FL → Miami)
Purvis ultimately stayed home, committing to Miami where proximity and early momentum in his recruitment proved too much to overcome. Despite making his top group, USF was never able to close the gap once the Hurricanes took control late in the process.
-Max Labinjo (CB – Hollywood, FL → Georgia)
Labinjo’s recruitment slipped away early as Georgia surged ahead and eventually locked out other programs, including USF. The Bulls showed initial interest, but never gained enough traction to seriously contend with the Bulldogs’ pull.
Injury Notes
–No major injuries were reported for USF following the game.
–WR Lamar Sweet continues to rehab his broken wrist and remains sidelined.
–TE Cam Deablo continues recovery from a hip injury.
Next Up
–USF will look to carry this momentum forward as they travel to face undefeated UAB in Alabama.
