'The Robledo Show' Dominates Wildcats In Another Lopsided Sooner Victory
Boone Tillman // Sooner BornPublished: September 15th, 2029

The Oklahoma Sooners war path continued in Lexington as they tamed the Wildcats with a 49-6 victory that got out of hand quickly. By the time the Kentucky Wildcats offense converted their first first down, they were trailing 28-0. That's how quickly the game got out of hand.

Kentucky's first three drives all ended in a quick three-and-out, setting up the Sooners' own first trio of drives inside the 50-yard line to start. The Sooners' first play from scrimmage was a 51-yard lightning jolt from Oscar Robledo and they never looked back as Robledo rumbled for 177 rushing yards, hauled in another 92 receiving, and tallied his second straight four-touchdown game.

After the game Coach Leon praised his team for their commitment to excellence and pushed back against claims that the Sooners were intentionally running up the score.

•••

Question One - Andre Alexander (Kentucky Kernel): "Coach, Oscar Robledo had yet another standout performance today. What more can you say about Robledo's performance so far this season that hasn't already been said? He's quickly becoming the talk of the country with back-to-back four-touchdown games and tallying nearly 300 yards of total offense alone in Lexington."

Armando Leon: "We said this summer that Oscar was going to be a big part of our offense and you see why: he's the whole package. You look at his two explosive touchdowns and they show you exactly why he's a premier athlete in today's game. First touch of the game and he hits the hole like he was shot out of a rocket, leaves two safeties touching grass, and actually decelerates on his way to the end zone just to taunt the defense. Then he opens the 3rd quarter with a wheel route, leveraging the linebacker perfectly to leave him out of position, hauls in an over-the-shoulder catch that some premier receivers would struggle with, and keeps his balance to accelerate 78 yards for the touchdown. If he's not #1 on the Heisman contending list next week, it's a crime against football."

Question Two - James McDavid: "Coach, despite jumping up on the Wildcats pretty quickly, leading 28-0 by the end of the 1st quarter, you kept your starters in deep into the 3rd. What do you say to some pundits who have claimed you're intentionally running up the score to prove a point after the heavy criticism you faced this summer?"

Armando Leon: "At the end of the day, let's not pretend like the guys on the field aren't getting paid. If I pull my starters at the half, that's directly hindering a future payday they could earn with limited stats. So I give every player on the team the option, once we're up they can sit or they can play. Ain't nobody sat yet, and I can't say I blame them. That being said, we only threw the ball on 3rd down in the 4th quarter. If I was really running up the score, we had the opportunity."

Question Three - Angus Summerall (SEC Network): "Coach, your team has obliterated the start of your SEC slate, but faces a stiffer competition next week with the Florida Gators. Any worry that there will be extra motivation on their part to make a statement now that many are calling the Sooners the 'hottest team in the SEC?'"

Armando Leon: "None at all. In fact, I hope they bring their A-game. Iron sharpens iron. We certainly won't be pulling any punches on our end."

•••

Okay, I'll admit I may have been a little off-base with the pre-game prediction. Y'all can stop retweeting me now, okay? It may be time to start giving this team some real credit, they may simply be good enough to take any potential 'trap game' and power right through it.

Next week in Gainesville is going to tell us everything we need to know about these Sooners. If they drain the swamp, my doubter hat is officially in the trash. Until then, I reserve the right to be cautiously skeptical.

Oklahoma Gets First Official Commit Of 2029 With Local Recruit
Boone Tillman // Sooner BornPublished: September 23rd, 2029

The Oklahoma Sooners have their first official verbal commitment of the 2029 recruiting cycle after four-star center Kris Wilbur, of Muskogee, Oklahoma, announced via IG his intent to enroll at the University of Oklahoma this fall.

Wilbur posted a picture of himself flashing the 'horns-down' sign with the caption "#SOONERBOUND" before an official release from the university was made public.

Wilbur is the 156th prospect nationally and the fifth-highest rated center in the 2029 class, but most importantly: Wilbur is the second-highest rated player from the state of Oklahoma.

"I think it's important to keep local talent local," said Leon via the same press release, "Grabbing the second-overall prospect in the state will hopefully start to make the rest of the recruits realize the benefit of staying close to home."

According to reports, Wilbur grades out as a player with tremendous physical tools that will need to work on his technique at the next level.

"Wilbur has great size at 6'4" and 293 pounds and that raw strength is evident immediately when you watch his tape. Where he needs refinement is with the technical side of things. When his first push doesn't overwhelm his defender, he struggles to find other effective means of blocking."

It wasn't all daisies for the Sooners after their 49-6 shelling over Kentucky, however, as the most recent news out of Mansfield, Texas has the Oklahoma Sooners trailing in the race for the consensus #1 overall prospect, quarterback Klay Abraham. Sources close to the touted recruit have the Alabama Crimson Tide currently leading the pack with Texas A&M and TCU trailing behind, respectively. While Oklahoma isn't completely out of the running, currently ranked fourth, the feeling is that barring a colossal change of perspective, Abraham won't be donning Crimson and Cream at his announcement press conference.

Other notable prospects have started narrowing their lists down to a handful of teams with Lorenzo Rozenboom (2nd), Ja'Darius Tonges (12th), Paul Hixon (13th), and Dion Pape (24th) all having the Sooners' atop their increasingly short lists.

2029 Week Five Preview - Oklahoma (4-0) @ #14 Florida (4-0)
Boone Tillman // Sooner BornPublished: September 28th, 2029

The Oklahoma Sooners are preparing for their biggest SEC test of the Leon era as they conclude a four-game streak of road games in Gainesville against the 14th-ranked and undefeated Florida Gators.

Many around the nation were wondering if the Gators were a paper tiger after struggling to put away Ball State in a 42-30 victory that required some 4th quarter magic by the Gators, but those doubters have gone quiet after Florida downed Ole Miss 52-27 last week.

After the stat graphic we'll get to the "Schooner Scoop" where Leon addresses his first trip to "The Swamp", Robledo's Heisman chances, and the curious case of Oklahoma's Top 25 ranking, or lack thereof.

Schooner Scoop

BT: "The upcoming trip to Ben-Hill Griffin Stadium will be your first time entering "The Swamp," Coach Leon. What are your expectations for a stadium that ranks fifth nationally in the 'toughest places to play' and how exactly is the team preparing for the often frenzied crowd?"

AL: "I've been to the Big House, Autzen Stadium, and the Rose Bowl, Boone. I'm not scared of no place called the damn Swamp. The biggest challenge is combating the crowd noise, but with this being our fourth straight road game we've got the silent count mastered. I don't predict any problems dealing with the crowd and I fully expect them to be as quiet as Autzen was once the clock strikes zero."

BT: "You pushed after the Kentucky game for the Heisman recognition for Oscar Robledo and it finally came, with reports coming out that he's now the odds-on favorite to win the Heisman ahead of Ohio State QB Jason Wright and Mississippi State QB KaMario Taylor. Does that add any pressure to Coach Mack to keep featuring Oscar to continue to fuel that hype?"

AL: "Not at all, Boone. The goal is to win by any means necessary. We plan for Oscar to get a lion's share of the touches, but if something forces us to abandon that plan we have no qualms about it, and neither does Oscar. Individual awards are great, but we've got our sights set on a bigger prize and the team as a whole is focused on that singular goal."

BT: "Despite the strong 4-0 start and a win over the 15th-ranked Oregon Ducks, in Autzen as you mentioned earlier, the Sooners have yet to crack the AP top 25 rankings. Does that put an extra chip on the team's shoulder going into another ranked match?"

AL: "It's something we're cognizant about, but not something that drives us specifically. We plan each game to take the field and assert our dominance, regardless of what the national media thinks. If they don't think we've earned a ranking yet, we're just going to keep going out there and destroying the teams they do vote in, until they've got no choice but to acknowledge us."

•••

The narrative of the trap game is over, Coach Leon and the crew have pounded that into submission. But, going into Gainesville against a ranked Florida Gators team featuring an offense ranked in the top five nationally, with a defense ranked equally as high, is anything but a trap game: it's a straight-up heavyweight title bout.

The Sooners this year haven't given me a reason to doubt them yet; no slip-ups or obvious chinks in the armor. Until they do, it's #BoomerSooner baby.

35 Oklahoma, 24 Florida.

Sooners' Comeback Ends On Failed Two-Point Conversion In 52-51 Gators Win
Boone Tillman // Sooner BornPublished: September 29th, 2028

The Oklahoma Sooners overcame a 45-24 deficit with a blistering 27-point 4thquarter, but the only thing that will be remembered from this game by the end of the season is the controversial decision by Armando Leon to go for the go-ahead two-point conversion with just under two minutes left, eschewing the game-tying field goal. The call immediately backfired as Oscar Robledo was swarmed in the backfield on the direct snap. The Gators would then convert a first down on the following drive to officially salt away the narrow 52-51 victory.

You couldn't have drawn up a worse start for the Sooners if you had tried, and it's unfortunate that Leon's blunder is going to be the defining story of this contest; because these Sooners never gave up.

On just the third play of the game, and Cole Welliver's first pass, the Florida Gators came up with 18-yard pick-six by MLB Rashaun Voss. A missed field goal on the ensuing Sooners' drive led to a Mo Nwagbuo touchdown run and suddenly the Florida Gators were up 14-0 and The Swamp had reached a fever pitch. Then, Oscar Robledo turned a swing pass into a 62-yard touchdown, a quick stop by the defense turned into a second touchdown, and despite the rough start the Sooners were tied midway through the second.

Then, Mo Nwagbuo erupted for a 77-yard run less than a minute later, Welliver's second interception turned into a 17-yard reception by Branden Hoch, and a final drive before the half was capped with a Ty Rupe 8-yard touchdown. A last-second field goal did little to lift the spirits of the Sooners, who went into the half trailing 35-17 despite tying the game just five minutes earlier.

The second half quickly became a game where the Sooners clawed back, only for the Gators offense to quickly pull away again. But, despite long touchdowns to Branden Hoch and Cary Coons, the Sooners found a spark from an unlikely source.

Backup quarterback Jett Niu. When Cole Welliver went down clutching his knee again at the tail end of the third quarter, many Sooners' faithful felt it was the final death knell for Oklahoma in The Swamp.

Instead, Niu orchestrated a comeback for the ages, throwing for 196 yards and two touchdowns in the 4th quarter alone to will the Sooners back from the brink. When Oscar Robledo hurdled a Gators defender on the way to a 40-yard touchdown, it felt like the Sooners' victory was inevitable.

Then it all came crashing down. In the postgame press conference, Coach Leon placed the blame for the call, and the lackluster defensive game plan, solely on his shoulders while applauding the 'never say die' attitude of his team.

•••

Question One - James McDavid (OU Daily): "Coach, your defense came into this contest ranked 3rd in the country, yet looked completely overmatched against Florida. They threw for 321 yards, rushed for another 197, and seemed to have no problem generating big plays to keep our own offense at bay. What happened to cause such a sudden collapse and more importantly, how are you going to fix it?"

Armando Leon: "First and foremost, if you're looking for somewhere to place blame about the defensive game plan, it goes right here. The plan going into this week was to play trail coverage and jump routes looking to swing the momentum, banking on my guys simply being more disciplined and athletic. The Gators made some great plays, Branden Hoch had a pair of contested catches that I think Ralph wins 9 times out of 10. Today just happened to be the one. On top of it, we decided to play the pass off the RPO and they were able to leverage that into some big runs with us backpedaling to cover routes. Everyone is going to point to the two-point conversion call, but if we aren't giving up chunk plays late in the game, the two-point call would have been irrelevant. We should have switched the scheme up sooner, with it obviously not being our day in coverage, and again; that's on me. I'll learn from this and be better in the future, I can promise you that."

Question Two - Larry Halbert (The Independent Florida Alligator): "Speaking of the two-point conversion, what went into that decision. Was it a lack of trust in your defense to be able to get another stop, or just a gut feeling?"

Armando Leon: "I never doubt my defense, period. Let's discredit that notion right now. It was a gut feeling. We had no business being in a position to win, Oscar had just made what could be the play of the year and it felt like we just had the momentum. Obviously, Florida banked on us giving it to our best player and swarmed the backfield. It's one of those situations where if I call a play that doesn't include Robledo and it doesn't work, I'm bashed for not giving it to my best player. Call one for him and it doesn't work, it's that I should have been more creative. We had faith in Oscar to make a play, the Gators countered with a better defensive call, and that was that. Again, it was just one of those days where the margin of error was small and we simply didn't convert the plays we needed."

Question Three - Angus Sumerall (SEC Network): "Speaking of a slim margin for error, it's hard to argue that Cole Welliver's second interception didn't give the Gators the needed momentum to build a commanding lead going into the break. With the success that Jett Niu had in the miraculous 4th-quarter comeback, do you think there will be any conversation about who starts next week?"

Armando Leon: "Shout-out Jett, he just exemplified what we preach each week, be ready when your number is called. I don't think anyone, including him, expected for him to be under the lights in Gainesville with the game on the line, but he executed like he knew it was coming and was completely prepared for it. Our offense didn't change an iota with him commanding the huddle and that shows our confidence in him. That being said, if Cole is healthy, he's our guy. Period. Jett knows that, Cole knows that, the staff knows that."

Listen, I'm all for going for the win. But in that situation, after the comeback we just orchestrated, how in the hell can you NOT go for the tie?! It was there, PAT and we're at worst facing overtime. 'Cause here's the kicker:

THERE WAS STILL 1:43 REMAINING.

Even if you take the 1-point lead, they still have three timeouts and almost two minutes of clock to get into field goal range! It's a lose-lose situation. I just don't get it.

I never thought we would go undefeated, that isn't where my shock is coming from. I didn't expect for our defensive 'genius' to get 52 points dropped on his head, then to follow it up by completely distrusting his defense to get one more stop.

This wasn't just a loss for the Oklahoma Sooners. This game showed that behind all the posturing, all the bravado, all the big talk, that when push comes to shove Leon got outcoached by Shane Beamer.

Shane. Beamer.

Let that sink in, Sooner Nation.

Next week is a new game, a new chance. But Coach Leon is going to have to win big to erase the stink of this defeat. And if we're keeping it a buck, Leon can't lose a second game in a row with Missouri coming to town next week, or the season is already circling the drain.
