2029 Week Six Preview - #2 Missouri (4-1) @ Oklahoma (4-1)

It's been nearly a month since the Oklahoma Sooners opened the 2029 season with a 45-3 demolition of the Oklahoma State Cowboys, and their return couldn't come at a better time. The Sooners are returning to Gaylord-Memorial Stadium with their tails between their legs after a 52-51 loss in The Swamp after a controversial call by Armando Leon to go for two after storming back from down 45-24 at the start of the 4th quarter.
After the stat graphic breaking down how we stack up against the second-ranked team in the country, the Missouri Tigers, we'll get to the next "Schooner Scoop" where we talk to Coach Leon about the heavily-scrutinized decision, the health of Cole Welliver, and the variety of ways Coach Jerry Mack is deploying Heisman favorite Oscar Robledo.

BT: "Alright, Coach. I warned you when we started this whole Q&A I wasn't going to pull any punches. What in the blue blazes were you THINKING going for the two-point conversion with almost two minutes remaining? Before you answer—I get going for the win, really I do. But I just can't justify it in that situation!"
AL: "I get the skepticism, Boone, really I do. But, I play to win, period. We had momentum after the huge play Oscar made and I tried capitalizing on it. It backfired. I don't regret the decision and I'd probably do it again. That's just the way I am. At the same time, the scrutiny that comes with that is why I make Crumbl Cookie money. If it works, we're singing a different tune. I know that, the players know that, the staff knows that. Hell, even AD Roger Denny knows that. It didn't, so now I've got to live with that. We aren't going to change how we prepare just because of one decision that didn't go our way. That's coaching reactively, and winners don't do that."
BT: "Fair enough, Coach. But until you swing some big wins our way, I'm going to hold it against you. Just being honest. Moving on, however. The one thing every Sooner fan is asking once we get past the two-point call is: just how bad is Cole's knee and are we going to be seeing more of Jett in the near future?"
AL: "He's been on light duty all week rehabbing it and the docs tell me he'll be good to go. He isn't the most mobile guy to begin with, but we're worried about him being able to plant and really drive the ball. He says he'll be good, the staff says he'll be good, so until I'm told otherwise; he's good, Boone. If Jett has to take some snaps, I think we saw last week he's more than ready to deliver."
BT: "Last one, Coach. Oscar was electric last week, no bones about it. But he only carried the ball seven times as Butch took the majority of the carries while Oscar played scat back. Is that going to be the formula going forward for Oscar?"
AL: "Game by game, Boone. With Florida's speed we wanted to take advantage of the extra physicality Butch brings to the table, while keeping Oscar fresh. Before anyone takes that out of context, it's not that Oscar couldn't handle being physical in the trenches. He can. We just wanted to save his wheels for when we needed it the most, and it almost won us the game. Does that mean he isn't going to be a bellcow going forward? Definitely not. He's going to get the ball as many ways as we can to impact the game in our favor."

Leon can slice it whichever way he wants, I still don't like the decision. Didn't like it in real time, didn't like it in the postgame, don't like it now. Hell, I may never like it. But you can commend him on one thing, he sticks to his guns. That may not always be the best trait for a coach, but at least he's consistent. Given his track record, that's something.
I think the defense rebounds. I've watched a lot of tape of Leon coaching and the times he's been shelled like last week in Gainesville are few and far between. But, even on the rare occasions where he gets 'got', it never happens twice in a row. The Tigers have a pair of starting linemen out and I think that is going to play right into Leon's game plan. I expect Zollers to get rocked tomorrow, folks.
The wild card is Cole Welliver. If the knee is good and he can keep the Tigers honest, expect another field day from our Heisman favorite. If he's hurt, I really hope the staff considers swinging it to Jett. 'Cause if Cole is a statue back there, it isn't helping us, him, or Robledo.
Missouri comes into the game ranked #2 in the country, but I don't give a damn. Boomer Sooner.

2nd-Ranked Tigers Get Tamed As Oklahoma Bounces Back At Home

The Oklahoma Sooners may have returned to Gaylord-Memorial Stadium with their tails tucked firmly between their legs after losing 52-51 in Gainesville last week, but they didn't let the sting of defeat keep them down for long. Oklahoma jumped all over the second-ranked Missouri Tigers in an eventual 49-17 dethroning of the Tigers behind a swarming defense and another do-it-all performance by Oscar Robledo.
Head Coach Armando Leon faced plenty of criticism over the last week about the controversial two-point conversion attempt, but showed he was unbothered by the chatter making another gutsy call early in the win, going for it on 4th-and-1 from their own 32 on the first possession of the game.
This time, Oscar Robledo slashed up the middle for an 8-yard run and at the end of the 8-play drive, Terrance Butcher bullied his way in from nine yards out. A quick Mizzou three-and-out was followed by a quick 58-yard touchdown to tight end Trynae Washington, who simply ran past the linebacker in coverage, and was followed by another rough Mizzou drive leading to Oscar Robledo's 14-yard touchdown grab, the first of four on the afternoon for the Heisman favorite.
Missouri struck back on more than one occasion, including a 75-yard touchdown by DaMarion Fowler in the final minute of the 1st quarter, but despite a few big plays they were never within striking distance of the Sooners. Their closest opportunity came on the opening drive of the second half, trailing 35-14, but back-to-back incompletions by Matt Zollers led to the nine-play drive ending in a 53-yard field goal and the Tigers would never threaten again.
After the game, Leon answered questions about the gutsy 4th-down attempt, his defense's rebound, and the continued dominance of Oscar Robledo.

Question One - James McDavid (OU Daily): "Coach, despite widespread criticism about the two-point attempt last week you stated multiple times you would do it again given the circumstances. You then followed that up with an extremely risky 4th-down attempt on the opening drive of the game, a play that could have swung the momentum to the second-ranked Tigers early. Was that just another case of you coaching to your style, or was that a defiant call to show the critics you didn't care about their opinions?"
Armando Leon: "I don't have to make a bold call to tell the critics I don't care about their opinions, I tell them to their face. I understand the media has a job to do, just as I do, and theirs is to generate headlines. I'll make it blatantly clear; how the media reacts to my coaching decisions has never and will never impact how I coach on the field. It was a big game, coming off a deflating loss, and with one yard to go I just felt like it was a moment we had to seize. We all wanted that redemption a bit, I think, so when the call came in you could see the offense perk up a bit and get ready to really move some bodies."
Question Two - Chase Laughlin (The Maneater): "Grayson Wilson and the Gators offense tore your defense to pieces last week, a game plan you stood behind despite the 52 points. Did you really stick to your guns and not change the game plan, or was that merely gamemanship to throw the Tigers offense off balance?"
Armando Leon: "You always tweak little things on a week-to-week basis, but the guise of our defense generally stays the same. I said it last week and I'll say it again, the plays the Gators were able to have success with we shut down 9 times out of 10. You saw that tonight, those same plays the Tigers weren't executing with the same precision. Add in the impact Karlos Vigil had on the field, moving bodies, disrupting passing lanes, and hitting Zollers constantly, and it flips the script. Vigil had both of our sacks tonight and on the second interception Zollers threw, it was off-balance because he was in the process of being sacked."
Question Three - Meg Semental (SEC Network): "You said last week that the plan for Robledo would be to get him as many touches with opportunities to swing momentum as possible, especially after only carrying the ball seven times against Florida. The numbers speak for themselves; 21 rushing attempts, 10 receptions, 235 total yards, and four touchdowns. Is that kind of workload sustainable over the final half of the season, or is that workload going to need to taper down to keep him healthy for a hopeful playoff run?"
Armando Leon: "I think if we can afford him some rest later in the season, it would behoove us to take advantage of it. We've got the benefit of a late rest week in Week 10, so with any luck we'll be able to get there without running his tread bare and get him refreshed for the final stretch. He's the most dynamic player in college football right now, you can quote me on that, so we're going to keep getting him the ball in as many ways as possible."

This was a game the boys had to win and you could tell from the moment they took the field that they understood the assignment. After the brutal loss in Gainesville last week, that's the type of rebound you love to see.
The most important part was that the Sooners absorbed the momentum swing in the second quarter, with a few Cole Welliver interceptions sprinkled in, and were able to power through it to finish the game off. Championship caliber teams don't just put the opposition down early, they remain calm when the tide begins to turn, then bear down and chokes the life out of their opponent.
Missouri may have entered the contest ranked second in the country, but no one believed they would stay there, making what should be a landmark win feel like just another ranked victory.
The real test comes next week in the Red River Rivalry.

2029 Week Seven Preview - #18 Texas (3-3) @ Oklahoma (5-1)

While the Red River Rivalry, formerly known as the Red River Shootout, was first played in 1900, a game the Longhorns won 28-2, it didn't become an annual tradition until 1929, making this the 100th consecutive year the two hated rivals have squared off. The Texas Longhorns may be coming off their second National Championship in three years after last season's win, but are currently on the ropes with a 3-3 record after last week's 38-28 loss in Columbia, South Carolina, putting Oklahoma in the perfect position to not only elevate their own case, but also put the final nail in the Longhorns' coffin for the 2029 season.
Oklahoma rebounded from the embarrassing 52-51 hiccup against the Florida Gators with a dominant showing against the second-ranked Missouri Tigers, and look ready to keep the train rolling right through the Cotton Bowl. After our quick comparison between the two rival programs we'll get to "Schooner Scoop" to get Coach Leon's take on the game that'll make or break his first season and the rematch against former Washington Husky quarterback Brian Purnell.

BT: "This is it, Coach Leon. The Red River Rivalry against the hated Longhorns. I'm sure you don't need a reminder, but I'll do it anyway. Short of winning a National Championship nothing is going to save you from the vitriol of Sooners fans if you drop this game. That being said, how excited are you to get out there and show the Sooners fans how tough you are by taking down the defending National Champions?"
AL: "Hold on a sec there, Boone. Did you just guarantee a win and put that on my jacket?"
BT: "It's put up or shut up time, Coach. From what I've seen so far, you ain't one to shut up. You aren't gonna make me a liar now, are ya?"
AL: "That's what we're doing today? Alright, I'm game. You heard it here first, the Oklahoma Sooners are going to keep the wagon rolling right on over the Longhorns as we move to 6-1 and hopefully knock those burnt orange wannabes right out of the top 25 ranking. This is where I flash the horns down, right?"
BT: *flashes horns down with Leon* "We'll have to put that on the social media teaser about the latest episode. Back to business, however. You're very familiar with first-year Texas starter Brian Purnell after the former Washington Husky quarterback downed your Terrapins behind 312 passing yards and a touchdown in the come-from-behind 24-20 Washington victory in College Park. What did you learn from that meeting that will help you back up the guarantee you just made?"
AL: "Yeah, Brian got us last year with a phenomenal 4th quarter, so that's the biggest takeaway: don't think he's down until the count reaches 10. He's got a big arm, the mobility you love to see out of the position, and the smarts to punish slip-ups in coverage. We'll have to play sound in coverage and keep containment so he doesn't run rampant on us, but if we can do that I love our chances. Their own defense has been suspect, to put it mildly, so as long as we can limit the big plays and make them earn every yard, I've got full confidence in Cole and the offense to put enough points on the board to leave Dallas with a W."

Texas is reeling, the Sooners are surging, and we've got the advantage with a superior defense. Defending National Champions or not, they're going down this weekend in Dallas. Coach Leon knows the stakes and I don't see him letting his team come into the Cotton Bowl not prepared to throw up the "Horns Down" when the clock hits zero.
Purnell is the wild card. He's slashed Leon's defense into pieces in a critical 4th quarter with the Huskies and will undoubtedly look to do it again. Purnell vs Leon the rematch will be the deciding factor in the 100th consecutive showdown against our arch-rivals.
I'm betting it all on Leon.
