Penn State knock Stanford out of playoff contention as Maggio stars for the Nittany Lions
Stanford's title defense ended with a whimper on Saturday afternoon as the injury depleted Cardinal fell 57-43 to Penn State in a standout performance from Jermaine Maggio.

It was a competitive start with Penn State taking the early lead who intercepted Earl Nienhuis and stripped him off the football, leading to five points with a safety on the strip sack that was recovered by lineman in the endzone and then on third down, Maggio completed the first of several deep passes to his receivers, this one going to Dan Mangum for 64 yards, setting up a touchdown shortly after to take the 13-0 lead.

Nienhuis would exchange explosive touchdowns with Maggio with one of his passes going for 47 yards and then Maggio hooked up with Rickey Everett for a 55-yard touchdown. The sides would continue to swap touchdowns, including the end of the half where Logan Everett replaced Nienhuis who injured his leg and wouldn't return.

The second half is where Penn State pulled away after entering with an eight point lead, going 75-yards on the first play from scrimmage on a completion to Ricky Everett and on the first play from scrimmage for Stanford, Everett would be stripped of the football, leading to a touchdown run by Maggio on fourth down for a fourteen point swing in the first four minutes of the second half.

Stanford never managed to make it close as they failed to string together consecutive stops with top defensive back Kentrell Marvin sidelined with an injury, leading to true freshman Marco Stick and senior cornerback Paul Garrison being picked on by the Nittany Lion. Offensively, the Cardinal finished the game without two of their starting offensive lineman who left with injuries.

With their third loss of the season and already ranked outside the top ten, the loss effectively ends Stanford's chance at defending their national championship and likely punches Penn State's ticket into the playoffs.
