Armando Leon Gunning For Familiar Faces As Transfer Portal Officially Opens
Boone Tillman // Sooner BornPublished: January 23rd, 2030

For Armando Leon and the Oklahoma Sooners, it appears their transfer portal strategy this year falls firmly under the category of "if something works, do more of it."

Coach Leon leaned on his former connections in his first offseason with the Oklahoma Sooners with the signings of both Greg Foxworth and Antoine Eze from the Oregon State Beavers, both players who were recruited by Leon during his two years in Corvallis. Foxworth and Eze were starters for the National Champion Oklahoma Sooners this past season and it appears Leon is banking on similar success in the 2030 transfer portal.

With the transfer portal officially opening today, the Sooners already have six official visits scheduled for former players under Leon; three each from Maryland and Oregon State with five of the six landing on the defensive unit.

When asked about the belief that Oklahoma is the front runner for all six of the players, regardless of their reasons for leaving their respective schools, Leon was dismissive of any foul play.

"It seems like a no-brainer decision to me. These are guys that I recruited for a reason and helped coach up. The familiarity is the biggest asset. They know the system, the playbook, and what I expect. I'm really baffled at the overwhelming negative response that players who already agreed to play for me once are excited to do it again for the reigning National Champions. I'm not the first coach to bring former players with me, but unlike those previous instances, I'm not bringing an entire starting unit with me. Each time I've left a program, I've never advocated for anyone to follow me. If they chose to do so of their own volition?"

Leon raised both his shoulders in a half-hearted shrug, "Sue me I guess," he added.

Listen folks. Everyone is quick to cry foul in today's day and age, I get that. But like Leon said, he isn't Curt Cignetti taking the entirety of the James Madison roster with him, or Kalen DeBoer poaching the Washington Huskies when he left for Alabama. Some of these young men are two years removed from playing for Leon and if their respective programs lacked the resources to keep them, good for them for betting on themselves and finding somewhere that does.

And, let's not pretend these aren't positions of need for the Sooners. We lost our All-American MLB in Kyle Brink, bringing in a guy like Gordon Paul, who was a four-star recruit and played under Leon as a true freshman sounds like a no-brainer. He got buried on the depth chart in Maryland with the scheme switch, but he still has talent and most importantly, Leon trusts him.

LaMarcus Blount, Mario Magnifico, and Jamie Isaacs all play corner, or are projected to in the case of Isaacs who has underwhelmed as a full-time safety, where we lost three players from last year's squad. Like Leon said, this is a non-issue. Coaches bring in former players every year, just becase we're the reigning National Champions, suddenly people want to cry foul?

PUH-LEASE!

The bigger story, in my opinion, is the curious lack of information regarding the Sooners and transfer portal quarterbacks. I have heard exactly ZERO chatter on that front, period.

Cole Welliver is gone, folks, in case you didn't realize he was graduating. AJ Hatchett, Larry Thrasher, and Javier Hyde are the only quarterbacks on the roster. Hatchett was a four-star recruit last year, so the jury is out, but both Thrasher and Hyde have career clip-board holder written in permanent ink all over them.

We're bringing in two quarterbacks in our recruiting class, and by all accounts the coaching staff is bullish on their belief in Markelle Nickey, but if you want me to sit back and smile while we trot out a true freshman or redshirt freshman as we look to defend our National Championship, you clearly aren't a long-time listener.

BRIAN PENNEL IS RIGHT THERE. He is in the portal. When asked what he is looking for during his final collegiate season, he had one answer: to win.

And what did the Oklahoma Sooners just do last season?

OH YEAH, WIN.

It looks like a match made in hog-heaven. So why am I hearing zero traction on that front?

I can only hope that it's being kept exclusively under wraps, or that with all the attention on recruiting former players, the Sooners' pursuit of Pennel has gone under the radar.

Because I refuse to believe Coach Leon's decision for the starting quarterback next season is going to come from the throw of a dart. 'Cause right now, that is exactly what he's doing by not going after ANYONE.

Prove me wrong, Coach. Please?

Oklahoma Pulls In Ninth-Ranked Recruiting Class After Eight Transfer Portal Additions
Boone Tillman // Sooner BornPublished: February 4th, 2030

The dust has finally settled on the always chaotic final two weeks of the recruiting season, where not only the remaining high school recruits are trying to find their new home, but thousands of other student-athletes looking for their next opportunity, or in some cases their next payday.

With eight additions in the portal, four of which are former Leon players, the Oklahoma Sooners finished with a respectable 25 total recruits, good for ninth in the overall rankings and fifth in the SEC.

"We're pleased with this class, no doubt about it," confirmed Leon after the signing period officially closed this morning. "We filled some major depth needs and found a few guys in the portal we feel can step in and contribute right away, which is always the goal. Utilize the portal to shore up your weak spots and use the prep recruits to deepen the pool of talent."

When pressed to name the "star" of the class, Leon didn't bite, instead stating, "All these guys were brought in because we think they have bright futures in the Crimson and Cream. To name a 'favorite' would be like asking a mother of six kids to pick her favorite, not fair."

If Leon doesn't want to play favorites, then we certainly will here at Boomer Sooner, ladies and gentleman.

From everything I've seen on tape, Lorenzo Rozeboom is the real deal. I know we got Gordon Paul in the portal, more on that later, but I really think Rozeboom can carve out a niche role even as a freshman due to his football IQ and athletic abilities. Same goes for Paul Hixon, dude is a legitimate stud at corner. The type of dude you line up on one side of the field and don't just think, but believe, that he is going to shut-it-down. Throw 'em in jail and throw away the key type of coverage.

Markelle Nickey deserves a mention here as well, and not just because of the startling quarterback depth we find ourselves in, again more on that later. He's got an above-average arm, although it definitely falls below an 'elite level', but the accuracy is the sticking point. When he is on, scouts say the ball never hits the ground. That's the type of accuracy that puts you into the upper echelon of conversations, and quickly.

Enough with the prep recruits, however, 'cause everyone knows it's the transfer portal that gets the most clicks in today's day and age.

First off, remember last year when certain media outlets were beating the drum on how Leon can't keep his own players, or coach up the ones he gets?

I'd love to get some of those guys under the microscope now to talk about how that notion has curdled like milk left outside during a Midwest summer. SIX, count 'em SIX, former Leon recruits or players opted to rejoin their former coach in Norman, with another in Mario Magnifico opting to stay closer to family, but acknowledging if not for his mother's health problems, he'd likely be in Norman as well.

I'm beyond pumped to see some of Leon's former players back in the fold. They already know the coach, know the playbook, and clearly Leon thinks they're a fit here in Oklahoma. This isn't taking a guy who performed at another school and hoping he is what you thought he was, Leon knows these cats. Plug and play, all day baby.

Gordon Paul is the type of linebacker Leon loves, fast with the instincts to back it up, and the fact he played in Leon's system—which many have called 'complicated chaos' at different points in his career—shows that he has the IQ to back up the physical abilities. We may have lost Kyle Brink inside, but by all accounts Paul is ready to fill that void with a quickness.

Paul is far from the only impact defender heading to Norman this season. Corners Dom Sierra, LaMarcus Blount, and Jamie Isaacs—who is expected to move to corner after starting as a safety in Corvallis—are the perfect additions after you watch three veteran corners walk out the door with only Richard Trainer and a handful of unknowns waiting in the wings.

Despite having Terrance Butcher ready to build on a surprising campaign, nearly tallying 1,000 rushing yards despite playing behind Heisman winner Oscar Robledo, and the lightning-quick Isaac Adcock waiting in the wings, Leon dipped into the portal for an explosive back once again with the signing of former Tulane back Brad Thorne, who is described as another Robledo clone with a little less physicality.

"He's a prototypical scat back. Think Christian McCaffrey without the inside running ability. Line Thorne up out of the backfield, in RPO screens, pitches, you name it—he's going to make some plays," lauded one rival athletic director, "Ask him to go between the tackles and he might not make it to December, however."

While Leon added Thorne along with former Iowa State center Dillon Silver and Minnesota receiver Floyd Canaday, the bigger news was what the Sooners would not add via the portal: a quarterback.

"We've got two prep recruits coming in we're extremely high on in Markelle Nickey and Charles Byler, plus a four-star recruit from last year in AJ Hatchett, that people seem to forget about," defended Leon when asked about the lack of a QB signing.

"We know what we're doing, trust me. Worst case scenario, we lean on a stable of running backs and throw the game plan back to the 50s," added Leon with a chuckle.

From what I've gathered talking to my sources, there is going to be a wide-open competition this spring for the starting job. Hatchett, from what I've been made to believe, is the front-runner, but don't count out Larry Thrasher or Markelle Nickey. They all bring a different skill set to the table that offensive coordinator Jerry Mack said is going to get some "long, hard looks" this summer.

I'll be honest, without a proven quarterback joining the fray this offseason feels a lot like smoke and mirrors. Don't get me wrong, I love the portal additions and think Leon snagged more than a few guys with huge upside from the prep ranks.

But, when you're the National Champions and your quarterback is walking out the door without an heir apparent, you have to get someone...right?

Well, wrong in this case. Now, we will await the spring game and hope that by then, the coaching staff has pinpointed the man to lead us into our title defense.

all of the guys from the portal are 82+ after training and we had some solid depth behind who was leaving. Outside of the quarterback situation - which was by design - everything else should be solid
