Pittsburgh, PA. -The Pittsburgh Steelers defense had apparently seen enough of the losing streak too.

Pittsburgh throttled the New York Giants 33-0 Sunday at Acrisure Stadium, ending a four game skid with a dominant performance that was equal parts defensive masterclass and quiet coming out party for first time starter Alonza Barnett III. The Giants had won six of their last seven heading into the afternoon, but never stood a chance against Pittsburgh's suffocating effort..

Barnett III was not asked to be a hero in his NFL debut, and to his credit he never tried to be. The former James Madison standout completed 24 of 37 passes for 275 yards and three touchdowns—a volume that Scheelhaase would later acknowledge was higher than the game plan intended—while doing the one thing his predecessors consistently failed to do this season. He protected the football.

"Just trying to stack good plays until we ended with points," Barnett said simply when asked about his approach. "You usually can't turn every play into touchdowns. Just trying to make the play that kept our team in the best position to keep driving."

The most telling moments of Barnett's afternoon came not from his touchdown passes but from his decision making late in the first half. Back to back interceptions of Cade Klubnik gave Pittsburgh three consecutive possessions in Giants territory—prime opportunities to blow the game open. Rather than force the issue chasing touchdowns, Barnett took the safe play each time, accepted the field goals, and walked away with points instead of turnovers.

Offensive coordinator Zac Taylor nodded approvingly afterward.

"One turnover in that spot and suddenly they've got life," Taylor said. "We spent all week talking about not forcing mistakes, so hats off to him for staying within the game plan and not forcing the issue in his first career start."

Scheelhaase echoed the sentiment while acknowledging the afternoon didn't go entirely according to script.

"That's what we needed—someone to calm the team down and keep the chains moving," he said. "Obviously the game plan isn't for him to sling it 37 times. But the Giants loaded the box against Quinshon and made us adjust. Now that teams have seen he can uncork it when called upon, it should only open up the line of scrimmage going forward."

The win moves Pittsburgh to 6-8—a record that, remarkably, still leaves the Steelers one game behind both Cleveland and Cincinnati, who each sit at 7-7 atop the AFC North. The division race is not over.

Pittsburgh hits the road next week carrying their first win in a calendar month to Washington, where they'll face the Commanders.
