2030 Week One Preview - Oregon Ducks @ #1 Oklahoma Sooners
Boone Tillman // Sooner BornPublished: August 30th, 2030

The offseason of celebration will officially come to an end tomorrow night as the Oklahoma Sooners welcome the Oregon Ducks to Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium to kick off the 2030 season and their title defense. The big mystery surrounding the Oklahoma Sooners will be who takes the field come tomorrow night to replace Cole Welliver as the starting quarterback.

We'll see how the projected Ducks starters stack up against our own, sans our quarterback, before we get into the new season of "Schooner Scoop" with Armando Leon as I try and pry out of him who the heck will be under center, how he plans on managing a stable full of running backs, and his expectations for a loaded defense.

Schooner Scoop

BT: "The time has come, Coach Leon, to kick off the National Championship defense with the Oregon Ducks coming to town. Last year, you smacked Oregon 52-14 IN Autzen, what are your expectations for this contest? Are we going to see another beatdown as you prove that ultimately, you were the right man for the job?"

AL: "Even if we don't get a win to kick off the season, I think it's fair to say I proved I was the right hire last year, no? I'm kidding. But really, losses happen. The worst thing we could do as a team is to take one loss and let it define our season. Win or lose, it is a singular game. No matter the result, we're resetting come Monday and moving on to the next opponent."

BT: "Well, I wasn't able to fish a guarantee out of you this time, and I've got a feeling I'm about to "whoosh" again here, but I have people to answer to. Who is going to be taking the first snap under center for the 2030 season?"

AL: "Whoosh again, Boone. You will find out the same time as the rest of Sooner Nation along with the Oregon Ducks: when our quarterback trots onto the field for the first offensive drive."

BT: "Alright, Coach, you've got to give me something. What's the game plan to get the slew of running backs incorporated into the game? Surely, you can give out the secrets on that?"

AL:*laughs* "Alright, Boone, I'll throw you a bone on this one. Butch is the bell cow, no ifs, ands, or buts about it. He proved he can handle the load last year behind Oscar, but we also learned from last year that we can't make him do it all. Brad and Dillon have a variety of different looks alongside Butch, whether it's between the tackles, in the passing game, or simply as decoys. And we have the added bonus of keeping Isaac fresh for the return game thanks to the depth we have."

BT: "Final question. You lost a lot of talent to the draft, but from what I've seen this unit is just as dangerous. What do you expect out of your unit this year?"

AL: "New faces, same expectation, Boone. We've got the coverage skills in the back to execute what we want up front. Aggressive, relentless blitzing. We're going to send guys at you on every down, and again on fourth down if we have to. That is how much confidence we have in our secondary to hold up in coverage. We've got a group of dogs on the back end and any one of them we trust in one-on-one man coverage without help."

•••

Coach Leon may have been evasive about the meaning of this game, but I can't imagine he doesn't want to win this game. The first chance to defend his National Championship, against Dan Lanning? You know he wants this one, regardless of his non-answer.

I'm on the fence about this game, strictly because of the quarterback situation. But then you look across the field, and Oregon is trotting out a backup whose last significant action was in 2028 as a backup for the UCLA Bruins. Even if our new quarterback lays a dud, we've got the defense and the running game to make up for it.

I think we win, but I'm not getting into predicting scores until I know exactly who is lining up under center.

No matter who takes the field though, it's still going to be #BoomerSooner all day.

Sooners Serve Charred Duck To Kick Off 2030 Campaign
Boone Tillman // Sooner BornPublished: August 31st, 2030

All of Sooner Nation was glued to their television sets on Saturday afternoon to see just who in the heck Armando Leon trotted out to lead the Oklahoma Sooners into the 2030 season. To the surprise of some, myself included I'll admit, it was true freshman Markelle Nickey who took the field on the opening drive. What wasn't a surprise however, unless you're an Oregon Ducks fan, was the end result: a 44-14 re-assertion of dominance by the Oklahoma Sooners who relied on gutsy play by Nickey, suffocating defense, and a barrage of running backs to simply overwhelm the visiting Ducks and Dan Lanning.

While Terrance Butcher entered the season as a Heisman favorite, it was his backup, Brad Thorne, who stole the show. On the first play from scrimmage, Thorne ripped off a 49-yard scamper to send the already electric crowd at the "Palace on the Prairie" into a frenzy and capped off the opening drive with a bruising 17-yard run, dragging three Duck defenders into the end zone on his back.

In all, it took four plays—all runs—for the Sooners to take the lead, for good.

Markelle Nickey threw a pair of touchdowns and Brian Rowe put in some timely kicks as the Sooners took a commanding 27-0 lead into the halftime break, thanks in part to the masterclass the Sooners' defense displayed on the field. Four sacks, four tackles for loss, and only two first downs for the Oregon Ducks told the tale of a team that was in over its head to start the game.

The Ducks would recover, marginally, in the second half, but it would ultimately be for naught. Vai Sagapolu led a precise touchdown drive to open the second half, finding De'Andre Hurd—who was the only Duck to consistently make plays against Oklahoma's defense—for a 45-yard touchdown to finally put Oregon on the board.

Sagapolu would toss a second touchdown in the fourth quarter with the game already well out of hand, but his day would fittingly end in disaster with a desperation heave on fourth down, trailing 44-14 late in the final frame, putting a disappointing end on the first start with the Ducks for the former UCLA Bruin.

While Markelle Nickey had his own struggles, tossing interceptions in the second and third quarters, he would rebound with a gutsy 62-yard touchdown to Darren Lyles in the fourth quarter to cap what was ultimately a stellar first start for the former four-star recruit.

After the contest, Leon praised Nickey's moxie, his defense's relentless effort, and the readiness of his stable of running backs.

•••

Question One - James McDavid (OU Daily): "Coach, I don't think anyone expected you to run out a true freshman coming off a National Championship last year. What ultimately went into the decision to go with Nickey instead of AJ Hatchett or the other quarterbacks on the roster with more experience in your offense?"

Armando Leon: "It's simple, James, we feel like he gives us the best chance to win. That's not a knock on AJ, Larry, or any one else in that quarterback room. But with his combination of accuracy, demeanor, and attention to detail, Jerry Mack and I felt like Nickey had earned this opportunity. And you saw some of that today. He opened the game with the pinpoint accuracy we've come to expect from him; starting the contest 10/12. He hit a speed bump midway through with a pair of interceptions—although we can't blame him for the second, it was just a heads up play by Zach Schell—but showed his composure by powering through. You saw that in the fourth, a lot of guys making their first start, in front of 80,000 screaming fans, coming off two interceptions, they don't make that sideline throw. They check it down and play it safe, not Markelle. He saw the look he wanted and put it right in the breadbasket. That's why he's our guy."

Question Two - John Shire (The Daily Emerald): "Coach Leon, your defense was swarming Vai Sagapolu all afternoon, limiting the Ducks' offense to just 266 yards in the game and only 37 in the first half. What was the game plan to attack Vai despite the limited game tape since his UCLA days?"

Armando Leon: "Same plan as always, get after the quarterback and build from there. A lot of critics were skeptical if this defense could live up to last year's unit. I think we answered some of those questions. We have five different guys record a sack, and nabbed seven total in the contest; that doesn't happen by accident. We kept everything in front of us, with the exception of a few big plays, and punished whoever had the ball. That's the gist of our game plan nearly every contest, and we executed to perfection today."

Question Three - Meg Semental (SEC Network): "A lot of the talk going into this game was the depth you had at running back. That was tested in the first game of the season with three different running backs leaving the game with injuries. What can you say about that group of position players that they were all ready to step up and answer the call when needed so early in the season?"

Armando Leon: "To be fair, they were all prepared to be in the game rotationally if everything went to plan, so each one of those guys was prepared to play. But it's one thing to be prepared for your small role, and another to play a chunk of the game without a break. That's this team's mentality though, step up when your number is called. Brad was a coveted player in the portal for a reason, 'cause he is a baller. You saw that today and you're going to keep seeing it all season. Whether Butch and Slye are healthy or not, Brad is going to get his."

•••

Outside of the two interceptions, I was thoroughly impressed with the debut for Nickey. I'll admit, seeing No. 15 trot out onto the field and getting his first action against a talented Ducks defense, I was questioning if Leon was making the right decision. The jury is still out on this season, but at least for tonight, per usual, Leon was right on the money.

It's only game one and while the Oregon Ducks program still has a certain prestige to it, let's not forget this is the same program we roasted 52-14 last year and limped to an 8-5 record. If anything, we're a step behind last year's team, scoring eight fewer points than last year.

I kid, of course. I will say, I'm more than happy to celebrate a win, but excuse me if I'm not booking tickets to Atlanta for the SEC Championship Game just yet. Game one is in the books in dominating fashion, but with the target on our back all season, it only gets harder with each win.

That was not an easy start to the season and you showed up.

Still hate them from the rivalry from last school?

that and with Dan Lanning turning down the job for story purposes, set up a natural rivalry between the two schools and an excuse to continue that rivalry from previous schools (we played them once with Montana State (which was an IRL game) and then obv with Oregon State and the Civil War, then again with Maryland in the playoffs).

no one caught the John Shire / Oregon student paper bread crumb :pgdead:

2030 Week Two Preview - #1 Oklahoma (1-0) @ #21 Oklahoma State (1-0)
Boone Tillman // Sooner BornPublished: September 6th, 2030

With the opening game jitters behind us, and a starting quarterback officially crowned, the Oklahoma Sooners will make the short trip to Stillwater for another Bedlam Series matchup with hated rival Oklahoma State.

The last time both of these teams were ranked, it ended disastrously for the good boys. Ninth-ranked Oklahoma fell 27-24 to 22nd-ranked Oklahoma State in a game that at the time, was thought to be the swan song of the series with Oklahoma leaving for the SEC the following season.

With the renewal of these two hated rivals, we get a chance to avenge that brutal ranked loss this week. Stick around following the matchup graphic for the latest edition of the "Schooner Scoop" as Leon breaks down the matchup and gives us the lowdown on the health of Terrance Butcher, Brad Thorne, and Dillon Slye before Week 2.

Schooner Scoop

BT: "Coach, I know you weren't here back in 2023 when the Oklahoma State Cowboys defended Boone-Pickens Stadium against the 9th-ranked Sooners in the final scheduled Bedlam Series, but even so, you've got to be raring to right that wrong on behalf of the program, right?"

AL: "We're always geared up for a win, Boone. But, we also know the context. We can't walk into Boone-Pickens thinking this is going to be the same story as in Norman, with a 45-3 demolition. This is a new roster, with a few new guys, and they're chomping at the bit to show they're the new kids on the block. We're going into Stillwater expecting a dogfight, hopefully it doesn't disappoint."

BT: "Most of the roster may be new, but LaMichael Jamerson had some significant playing time in last year's matchup after your defense knocked Andrew Alford out of the contest before the half. Jamerson was efficient with the ball in that second half, completing six of his eight passes, but was limited to just 78 yards while your defense racked up a pair of turnovers and five sacks against the big-armed quarterback. Do you expect him to come out and try to atone for that showing, and is the defensive game plan going to stay the same?"

AL: "I always expect a team we beat the year prior to come in looking for their lick-back, that doesn't change a thing. We've taken it on the chin and come up swinging more than once, and if he executes we'll do our damndest to do it again. As for the game plan, we've now got more tape on LaMichael than we did last year, so we're going to have a few more wrinkles to throw his way aside from the vanilla coverages from last year. If he thought last year was a whirlwind, he ain't seen nothing yet."

BT: "Love it, make him earn those yards, Coach. Last question, how is the health of the running back room looking going into this weekend? The top three guys on your depth chart all left the Week 1 contest with a variety of ailments, and while Brad Thorne returned to the field, Butcher and Slye did not. Were they a full-go at practice this week and what exactly will their workload look like?"

AL: "I think if it was a must-win game, both Butch and Dill could have gone back in, if we're being honest. It was Week One and despite the numerous conditioning drills we do over the summer and fall, sometimes that Oklahoma heat just gets ya, Boone. They were all full participants this week in practice, so we expect a full day of work out of the entire group."

It's payback time, seven years in the making. Last year Bedlam returned with a 45-3 stomping by the Sooners, but that Cowboys team wasn't ranked, and it wasn't at home. We've got the chance to really hit those Cowgirls where it hurts. Not only walk into their house and 'snatch their chain' as the kids would say, but also snatch that ranking next to their name.

If the running back room is indeed healthy and we see the same composure out of Markelle Nickey as we did at home in Norman, we win this game running away. If either, or both, of those fail to be true, it'll be close, but no cigar for the OK Corral.

This is a cool place to go to a game at. Went to Bedlam in 2017.

Anyways, should be easy. Onwards and upwards.
