Hopefully you get a bit more from the running game and another big win
its been boom and bust so far. We'll grind out a few runs of 2-3 yards, then someone will churn out a 10 yarder. More consistency and we'll be golden

Oklahoma Takes Nebraska Behind The Woodshed In Rivalry Blowout
Boone Tillman // Sooner BornPublished: September 14th, 2030

When the Nebraska Cornhuskers opened the game with a methodical and patient 11-play, 77-yard drive, I was concerned. Then, our own offense promptly went three-and-out and I was more than a little worried. In the span of 20 minutes, however, those fears were dispelled as the Sooners took a 28-14 lead into the break and put the clamps on Dexter Iverson and the Cornhuskers, turning the halftime lead into a 56-21 blowout that left Memorial Stadium in Lincoln sounding more like a wake than a rivalry game.

After Dexter Iverson opened the game a sterling 8/8, it looked like the Sooners' defense would be in for another up-and-down outing. Then, Richard Trainer snagged an errant pass by Iverson, and just like that the switch flipped. After starting 8/8, Iverson would finish 8/20 in the contest with two interceptions in what would become a disastrous game for the home team.

Oklahoma scored three touchdowns in a row following Iverson's interception on the second Nebraska possession, but with their hope fading by the minute, the Cornhuskers defense made a last-ditch effort to salvage the day. Defensive tackle Jeremy Garner found Markelle Nickey in the shadow of his end zone, hammering the freshman quarterback and jarring the ball loose, which Garner would record himself to set up Ruben Raimann's one-yard plunge to briefly pull the Cornhuskers within striking distance.

Then, Nickey found Iosefa Topa on a dig route at midfield and Topa did the rest, weaving through the corn maze of Nebraska defenders for the 82-yard touchdown run that would spark a 35-0 run by Oklahoma. While Markelle Nickey will get the bulk of the praise for the offensive explosion thanks to his six touchdowns, Dillon Slye quietly had a marquee impact as well with 145 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns.

Of the 104 yards of offense the Cornhuskers tallied in the second half, 84 of them came on a heave from backup Shawn Wortham that finally put Nebraska on the board in the second half.

Question One - James McDavid (OU Daily): "Coach Leon, what changed between the first drive by Dexter Iverson and the rest of the game, where he struggled to an 8/20 line with two interceptions? Was that nerves wearing off, a defensive adjustment, or both?"

Armando Leon: "If you watch that first drive, James, he was threading the needle on 75% of those throws. You can't live dangerously like that forever and come out unscathed. Once he finally made a mistake, it shattered his confidence and we teed off on him from there."

Question Two - Chuck Willard (The Daily Nebraskan): "What can you say about Markelle Nickey that hasn't already been said? It looked like Nebraska was ready to claw back into this game when they strip-sacked Nickey to set up the touchdown that made it 21-14, then in the blink of an eye he's finding Topa for a touchdown and it was wraps from there."

Armando Leon: "I'm running out of words to describe him, Chuck, that's for sure. Unflappable, ice cold, cool as a cucumber; take your pick. He meets the criteria. Hostile environment, rivalry game, and to that point our running game had ground to a halt. Lesser men, not just quarterbacks, fold in that situation. Nickey rises to the top."

Question Three - Meg Semental (SEC Network): "You mentioned the running game, which struggled early until the Cornhusker defense seemed to back off the line after Nickey torched them early. Dillon Slye is the third Sooner back in as many games to score multiple touchdowns, what does that kind of performance say about your depth where you're getting three touchdowns and 140 all-purpose yards from your third-string?"

Armando Leon: "We've got a regiment of dogs in the running back room, that's for sure. Brad broke out in game one, Butch reminded the country who he was in game two, and now Slye is running wild in game three. It makes us impossible to game plan for. Want to take away Butch up the middle? Brad can do that, and bounce it outside in addition to his work in the passing game. Brad goes down? Guess what; Slye can do that too. Want to load the line and stop our trio, and even quartet if you count Isaac, then you're going to watch Nickey drop dimes all day. I don't think it's hyperbole to say that we're the most dangerous team in the country, bar none."

After watching Oklahoma State's scrappy effort last week, hanging around until the final frame, then seeing Iverson carve up our secondary like a Thanksgiving turkey today, I thought the writing was on the wall. Then, the defense flipped the switch and it was night-night for the Huskers.

Even better for the Sooners' defense, it wasn't the pass-rush that sparked the defense to life—it was Richard Trainer and the secondary. Typically we see a few big sacks light a fire under Leon's defenses, so it was definitely refreshing, in my opinion, to see the defense come to life without the pass-rush getting home consistently. We only tallied one sack in the contest, although we were a tick late on a multitude of occasions, and typically in the past, that would mean we struggle for the majority of the contest.

At least for me, it's an encouraging sign for a defense that usually lives and dies by the blitz. We've become more than a one-trick pony, on both sides of the ball, and that should terrify the SEC as we prepare to open conference play next week.

2030 Week Four Preview - #1 Oklahoma (3-0) @ Mississippi State (1-2)
Boone Tillman // Sooner BornPublished: September 20th, 2030

The Sooners will remain on the road for the third straight game this week as they head to Starkville, Mississippi to open conference play against Oklahoma alum Jeff Lebby and the Mississippi State Bulldogs.

This may be an SEC tilt, but this is not a matchup that I foresee giving Leon and Co. any problems. Mississippi State has generated a strong offense to start the year, beating up on Southern Miss and Washington State, but due to their extremely underwhelming defense they sit at 1-2 on the season after allowing little brother Southern Mississippi to earn their first win against them last week.

After the quick graphic, we'll jump right into the "Schooner Scoop" with Coach Leon as we address Markelle Nickey's fast start, where the pass-rush has been, and his expectations for the upcoming gauntlet of SEC showdowns.

Schooner Scoop

BT: "First thing I want to talk about, Coach, is Markelle Nickey. I don't think anyone had "Oklahoma QB leading the nation in passing touchdowns" on their bingo card to start the year. With the SEC schedule now upon us, do you foresee that trend continuing, or are we going to see a more reserved Sooner offense against the SEC's elite defenses?"

AL: "We always play it by ear, Boone. Each game, each drive, hell even each play. The easiest way to get beat is to go into a contest and refuse to change your game plan, even if it's not working. We ran into some early fatigue issues with our stable of backs which led to some inconsistency, so having Nick step up and sling that thing so well has been a blessing. We're confident knowing that if we need him to continue to do so, he'll get it done."

BT: "Let's talk some defense, Coach. Your team currently ranks middle of the pack in terms of yardage metrics this season and while they've clamped down at times, overall it's not the same ferocious defense we saw last year. Y'all have tallied twelve sacks on the season, but it just doesn't feel like the overwhelming force that last year's unit was. Are we going to see some more personnel moves to try and unlock the next level, or is this simply what the defense will be this year?"

AL: "We've also gone up against some explosive offenses and limited them overall, so I don't think it's entirely "sky is falling" type of stuff, Boone. We'd like the defensive line as a unit to be more disruptive, but let's remember: Leon Britt is the only returning starter on that line. Once they get going, I believe we'll be fine. Until then, Kirk, Pat, and myself will keep cooking up some exotic blitz packages to keep the other teams on their toes."

BT: "Last one, Coach. This may be the SEC opener, but the real test will come over the next few weeks. A&M, Alabama, Texas, Ole Miss, and Georgia before your bye week, then two more ranked contests with Notre Dame and Auburn following. Do you think more than one loss in that gauntlet will keep you out of the playoffs?"

AL: "It'll be a tough stretch for sure, but that's why the SEC is the best conference in college football. No skips, no days off. You never want to plan for losses, but I think even if we drop two in that stretch, we'll be ok. It will be early enough that we'll have time to claw back, but if we come out of our bye week with one loss, and then lose in the final three games? Throw some BBQ sauce on us, 'cause we'll be cooked."

•••

I fully expect the Sooners to carry the momentum from Lincoln into Starkville and dismantle former Sooner Jeff Lebby, one alum that I refuse to celebrate, and the Mississippi State Bulldogs.

What I'll really be watching for is how the defensive line performs as the intensity ramps up. Because we can't be sending seven-man blitzes against the Bulldogs or Crimson Tide, we'll be asking for a world of hurt. If the defensive line can step up their game, even just a small fraction, I'll feel a lot more confident going into the murder's row of our schedule.

45 Oklahoma, 10 Mississippi State.

defense is still iffy, we're getting stops but they're less earned and more the CPU making mistakes
