NFL Suspends Richardson Indefinitely, Steelers Move To Avoid Contract As NFLPA Protests

Image

Pittsburgh, PA. - The final chapter of Anthony Richardson's tenure with the Pittsburgh Steelers opened and closed on New Year's Day.

In a rapid succession of announcements that landed within hours of each other Wednesday morning, the NFL issued an indefinite suspension of Richardson under the league's Personal Conduct Policy, the Pittsburgh Steelers formally moved to void the remaining four years of his five-year, $360 million contract, and the NFL Players Association filed an immediate grievance on Richardson's behalf, setting the stage for what promises to be one of the most significant contract disputes in recent league history.

The three developments, arriving in the final week of the 2028 regular season, draw a definitive line under a saga that has consumed the Pittsburgh franchise since Richardson's arrest on July 14th and effectively ended one of the most electrifying careers the NFL has seen in recent memory — at least for now.

The NFL's suspension announcement, released under Commissioner Roger Goodell's name at 9:14 AM ET, was unambiguous in both its scope and its reasoning.

The full league statement reads:
*"Following Anthony Richardson's guilty plea to Reckless Homicide in Marion County Criminal Court on December 29th, 2028, the National Football League has completed its review under the Personal Conduct Policy and has determined that an indefinite suspension without pay is warranted, effective immediately.*

*Mr. Richardson's guilty plea represents a conviction on a felony charge directly involving the death of another individual. The NFL's Personal Conduct Policy exists to uphold the standards of conduct we hold ourselves and everyone associated with this league to — as employers, as a public institution, and as members of the communities we serve.*

*Mr. Richardson will be eligible to apply for reinstatement no earlier than February 2031. Any application for reinstatement will be subject to a full review by the Commissioner's office at that time. We extend our continued condolences to the family and loved ones of Christiano Gonzalez.*

*We will have no further comment on this matter at this time."*
The reinstatement timeline—no earlier than February 2031—is consistent with Richardson's expected parole eligibility following his February 14th sentencing, at which point legal observers expect Judge Harold Watkins to impose a sentence of three to four years with parole eligibility after approximately eighteen months. The league's timeline effectively mirrors the legal one, leaving open the possibility of Richardson returning to the NFL if and when he is released and applies for reinstatement.

The Pittsburgh Steelers released their own statement at 10:31 AM ET, formally announcing the organization's decision to void Richardson's contract. The statement, attributed to General Manager Omar Khan, was precise and deliberate in its language — the words of an organization that has clearly spent weeks preparing for this moment.

The full Steelers statement reads:
*"The Pittsburgh Steelers have formally notified Anthony Richardson and his representatives that the organization is exercising its right to void the remaining term of his contract, effective January 1st, 2029, citing material breaches of the personal conduct provisions contained within the agreement signed during the 2027 season.*

*This decision was not made lightly. Anthony Richardson is one of the most gifted players this franchise has ever had the privilege of building around, and his contributions to this organization — two MVP awards, a Super Bowl championship, and an era of football that this city will not soon forget — are permanent parts of Pittsburgh Steelers history.*

*At the same time, our responsibility to this organization, to our fans, and to the standards we hold ourselves to as a franchise demanded that we act. We have done so.*

*We wish Anthony well in the difficult road ahead of him. We will have no further comment on the contractual specifics of this matter as it moves through the appropriate channels."*
The NFLPA did not wait long to respond.

Within ninety minutes of the Steelers' announcement, the union filed a formal grievance on Richardson's behalf, challenging the voiding of his contract and signaling its intention to pursue every avenue available to recover a portion of the guaranteed money remaining on his deal. NFLPA Executive Director JC Tretter held a brief press conference at noon ET, making clear the union's position and the strength of its resolve.
"The Pittsburgh Steelers have chosen to void Anthony Richardson's contract today," Tretter said. "The NFLPA believes that decision is inconsistent with the terms of that contract and inconsistent with the circumstances that led to Anthony's guilty plea. We have filed a grievance and we will pursue arbitration if necessary. Anthony Richardson was not a criminal who happened to play football. He was a man who found himself in an impossible situation on a terrible night and made decisions he cannot take back. The guaranteed money in his contract was earned. It was promised. And we intend to make sure it is honored."
Tretter declined to specify the exact dollar figure the union would seek to recover, but sources with knowledge of the grievance told ESPN the NFLPA's initial position is that Richardson is owed a substantial portion of the guaranteed money remaining on his extension, a figure that sources indicate is north of $100 million.

The Steelers, through a spokesperson, declined to respond to the NFLPA's filing directly, reiterating that the organization would not comment on the contractual specifics while the matter is in dispute.

The financial stakes of the grievance extend well beyond Richardson himself. For the Steelers, the timing of a resolution is critical. The new league year opens in mid-March, free agency begins the moment it does, and Pittsburgh enters the offseason carrying one of the most complicated cap situations in the NFL—a roster full of unsigned players seeking extensions, approximately $8 million in available space, and now the uncertainty of an unresolved NFLPA grievance that could complicate every financial decision the organization tries to make between now and then.

Sources with knowledge of both sides told ESPN that preliminary back-channel conversations between the Steelers and the NFLPA have already begun, with both parties acutely aware of the calendar and the mutual benefit of reaching a negotiated settlement before the new league year forces difficult decisions on both sides. The Steelers need cap clarity. The NFLPA needs a tangible and public win for their member. The framework for a deal, sources suggest, already exists.

"Nobody wants this to drag into March," one source familiar with the negotiations told ESPN. "Both sides know what a resolution looks like. It's just a matter of getting there."

For Richardson, Wednesday's developments represent the formal close of the football chapter of the worst year of his life, at least for now. His sentencing remains scheduled for February 14th before Judge Watkins in Indianapolis, where he will learn exactly how much time he will serve for the death of Christiano Gonzalez. His attorney Marcus Holloway released a brief statement Wednesday afternoon acknowledging the NFL's suspension and the Steelers' contract decision without directly challenging either.

"Anthony is aware of today's announcements," Holloway said. "His focus right now is on his family, on his son, and on the February 14th sentencing hearing. Everything else will be addressed in its appropriate time and forum."

Richardson himself remained silent, as he has since the night of his arrest nearly six months ago. Those close to him describe a man who has made his peace with the consequences bearing down on him and who is, above all else, focused on the future, however distant and uncertain it may currently appear.

He is 26 years old. He was, not long ago, the best quarterback in the National Football League.

Whether he ever will be again remains, for now, an open question.

Bills Clinch #1 Seed With Fourth-Quarter Comeback

Chase McLaughlin not only gave the Bills the #1 overall seed in the AFC, but also ended the Steelers outside playoff hopes, with this kick.

Buffalo, NY. - The Pittsburgh Steelers closed out the 2028 season Sunday afternoon at Highmark Stadium with an 18-17 loss to the Buffalo Bills that clinched the AFC's top seed for Buffalo and officially ended any remaining playoff hopes for Pittsburgh. It was a fitting if painful conclusion to the most turbulent season in recent franchise memory — a year defined not by what happened on the field, but by what happened in an Indianapolis parking lot on a July night that changed everything.

The cruelest part? The Steelers had it won.

Pittsburgh entered the fourth quarter leading 17-6, controlling the game behind another steady performance from Alonza Barnett III and a defense that had largely neutralized Josh Allen for three quarters. The Bills had managed nothing but two Tyler McLaughlin field goals and very little else. The season, improbably, was still alive.

Then it unraveled in the span of four minutes.

Allen finally found his rhythm midway through the fourth, but a Jalen Ramsey sack derailed the would-be touchdown drive and forced Buffalo into their third field goal of the afternoon. The Steelers, needing only to run out the clock, had multiple opportunities to put the game away. Instead Barnett, in an otherwise nearly flawless afternoon, tried to thread a bullet pass to Ryan Williams in traffic and found Christian Benford's hands instead.

The momentum shift was immediate and irreversible. Buffalo's offense, dormant for most of the afternoon, suddenly had the spark it needed. Allen needed just enough time to find the end zone with 2:38 remaining, and although the Bills were stuffed on a James Cook two-point conversion attempt, leaving Pittsburgh clinging to a 17-15 lead, the writing was on the wall.

With Quinshon Judkins already sidelined by a first half injury, Scheelhaase turned to Keaton Mitchell on three consecutive carries in an attempt to drain the clock and force Buffalo to burn their timeouts. Mitchell was stuffed on all three. The Bills got the ball back at the two minute warning with no timeouts, but excellent field position following Ian Strong's 24-yard return.

Allen converted a first down with a precise strike to James Cook, and McLaughlin did the rest, drilling his fourth field goal of the afternoon from a comfortable distance to put Buffalo ahead 18-17 with the clock winding toward zero.

Barnett had one final chance, driving Pittsburgh to midfield before a fourth-and-four completion to Deebo Samuel was ruled inches short of the line to gain. The officials confirmed the spot. The season was over.

Scheelhaase addressed a quiet visiting locker room with the measured perspective of a first-year head coach who has been through more in one season than most experience in a career.

"This has been the toughest year I've ever experienced in football," he acknowledged. "And yet we survived and came out with seven wins. I don't think there was an analyst in the country who could have predicted that. Our season may be over, but this team can hold their head high knowing they put their best foot forward each and every week."
