MAN CITY REDUCES RETURN TO A FORMALITY

Amsterdam | March 9th 2027, many had hoped Ajax would pull another stunt after couragously desposing of Liverpool in the preliminary round of 16 in this season's UEFA Champions League. However, Pep Guardiola's Manchester City gave the Amsterdam side football class in the opening half of the game, which created a gap Ajax were never going to be able to close. The 1:5 end score has made the return little more than a formality.

After a brilliant first half of the season, in 2027 the Ajax football machine is starting to stutter and falter. Even though still undefeated, loss of points against Telstar, AZ Alkmaar and Feyenoord has given rivals PSV a fair shot to successfully defend their title. From that perspective, the European fixtures felt as a relief. Often the underdog, Ajax fought themselves to surprise wins against Liverpool, Napoli and hard-fought ties against Arsenal and AC Milan. This lead to a second confrontation against Liverpool which after a 2:2 draw away, was sealed with a well desrved 2:1 at home. Ajax seemed to fare well against English teams, which is why the fixture with Man City was met with a degree of expectation.

None of that came true on the night itself. Ajax was under a false impression it could be equal to the visitors for about ten minutes. Then Pep Guardiola's team stepped on the accelerator and left Ajax biting the dust, though the opening goal still had the impression of bad luck. Ajax-goalie Predrag Rajković bounced a long distance shot from Erling Haaland and Rayan Cherki timed better his way to the air ball than direct opponent Mats Rots. But the 0:2 was not down to luck anymore: it was sheer class. Left winger Jérémy Doku dribbled Ajax-back Anton Gaaei crazy, cut inside and drew centre back Takehiro Tomiyasu towards him, which opened the gap for Rodri who chose the nearest corner for his 20-yard distant shot. But for Ajax the poison chalice wasn't empty just yet: the 0:3 went down the middle, like a knife through soft butter. This time Rodrid launched Tijjani Reinders who went deep. Youri Baas had his focus on Haaland which is why the accurate pass by Rodri put Reijnders 1-v-1 with Rajković - just before half time, the score reache 3:0 for the visitors.

Ajax-head coach Daniel Marzec clearly had an inspirational talk with his boys, because Ajax refused to bend over backwards and came out of half time reborn it seemed. After five minutes, an Ajax attack how Marzec had intended it, ended with a brilliant goal. Ringo Meerveld, serving as a false centre attacker, received the ball from 20 yards out. Where Rodri had chosen in the first half to shoot directly in the short corner, Meerveld curled it nicely passed Gianluigi Donnarumma from similar distance: 1:3.

Unfortunately mere minutes later, a corner restored the ditance of three goals. Erling Haaland received the ball after a scrimage and even though the striker couldn't hit the ball fully, Rajković couldn't save it either. Via a deflection of the goalkeeper, the score went 1:4. Ajax then desperately seeked for a consilation goal, but was hit on the counter attack in the end phase, courtesy of Omar Mamoush who scored 1:5.

"Our European adventure ends here, I'm afraid", Marec acknowledged early defeat, "a 1:5 home defeat isn't something we will able to brush away in Manchester next week. We gave it our all and we came utterly short." The coach immediately was looking for positives: "It does free us up to focus solely on winning the league now. We'll try to get another UEFA coefficient point or two and after that the focus will be fully on the handful of remaining domestic league games." Guardiola in true Pep-fashion had compliments for the team that his own just swept off the pitch: "They are truly a difficult team to play. This season we were better, but if their growth continues like this, I see in Ajax an outsider for the Champions League trophy next season."

AJAX REFOCUS FOR FINAL STRETCH TITLE HUNT
  • Ajax were down but not out after Manchester City. Heracles scored but that unleashed something within Ajax, who scored five times within 30 minutes of pure playing time.
  • However, PSV remain unshaken in the now very exciting title race, beating visitors Heerenveen at home by 3:0.
  • Feyenoord book an important win at AZ, while Twente, Utrecht and NEC drop points.

At least I don't have to listen to people speaking English, butchering foreign surnames...
THIS!

I've watched some cycling highlights with English commentary, and some of the speakers are actually quite good and make an effort pronouncing for instance Jonas Vingegaard as Vinge-gore in stead of Vinge-guard. Fast forward to football with Harland, Damsguard and Odeguard. Absolutely awful. Mind, I don't expect anyone to pronounce every name correctly. But for commentators to present themselves like that, showing that they've not even tried, that's what bothers me. It's literally their job to say these names.

On topic, two 5-1 games in succession. A perfect example of Ajax' situation. Superior in relation to the majority of the teams in the Eredivisie. Lacking in relation to the very best in Europe.

AJAX BOW OUT WITH CREDIBLE SECOND HALF

Manchester | March 17th 2027 - The return between Manchester City and Ajax (1:0) was nothing more than a formality, after last week's 5:1 demonstration by Pep Guardiola's visitors to Amsterdam.

Still, Ajax might take something hopeful away from Manchester: the team played a very good second half. The original and surprising tactics by Ajax-head coach Daniel Marzec, made the visitors the better team throughout the second playing half and gives perspective on how to play a team which on paper has the better players and qualities. After half time, Ajax shifted to a system with two defensive midfielders, two attacking midfielders, two wingers but no central striker: "essentially, we played with a square on the midfield supported by an agile winger on either side and that worked quite nicely", Marzec admitted. "If we were a bit more clinical in front of goal, we could've left with a draw from here."

Another positive was the return of versatile midfielder Sean Steur. After an almost four month absence, Marzec threw him back immediately into the starting eleven: "In Holland we say: what's good comes fast. He's one of those kids that secure a good future for Ajax, so I play him. And a little extra experience at this level at age 18 never hurts."

Pep Guardiola hailed the opponent's original take on the game: "You need to consistently evolve tactics: stick too long to one and the same and others will catch you, overtake you, outsmart you and beat you. That's why I said last week that if Ajax continue in this way, they'll be a top team in UEFA Champions League by next season: the tactical approach by their coach is so original. I think it also has to do with Jordi basically ordering him at the beginning of this calendar year to stop with wing play and to try something else. Yes, you'll struggle for a while because you're searching and puzzling. But Daniel Marzec again succeeds in surprising a bigger opponent and one day, that'll bear fruit for Ajax Amsterdam and Cruijffian Football."

82 / 28
  • The 82nd minute of the 28th round... is when both Ajax scored against Utrecht and NAC Breda against PSV; it could well be the decisive moment in this season's Eredivisie
  • PSV only lost to Ajax up until that moment. Now a sudden gap of six points. Round 30 (Ajax v PSV) could well become the decider
  • Volendam keeps dreams alive with a win at Heracles Almelo, only their second this entire season

Undefeated season? You're getting there. No slips allowed in the last six.

I'm surprised you swapped Mokio there. You must rate Leroux highly... or don't rate Mokio :pgdead: I've been thinking about going after him with Sheffield United.

He didn't want to extend, so better swap him than watching him leave for nothing
