2030 Week Eleven Preview - #1 Oklahoma (10-0) @ #2 Auburn (9-0)
Boone Tillman // Sooner BornPublished: November 15th, 2030

After barely surviving the upset bid by the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, the Oklahoma Sooners take the show on the road in another historic No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup as they prepare to face off with the Auburn Tigers under the bright lights of Jordan-Hare Stadium.

We'll take a brief peek at how we stack up against the suffocating Auburn Tigers' defense before we get right into the "Schooner Scoop" with Coach Leon to talk about last week's near miss, the expectations of yet another top-ranked clash, and how he expects Markelle Nickey to bounce back after the worst game of his young career.

Schooner Scoop

BT: "The boys cut it a little close for comfort last week, Coach Leon. What is the talk like inside the locker room to make sure that was the worst performance you'll put on tape this season, especially as you go into a hostile environment at Jordan-Hare Stadium against the #1-ranked defense in the country?"

AL: "We watched a lot of tape this week, Boone, and really highlighted our own miscues. I don't want to sound cute, or dismissive, but we really beat ourselves. Too many misreads, dropped passes, and blown assignments that allowed the Irish to keep punching right back into the game. And I'll be the first one to raise his hand and take ownership, I got too gung-ho with the fourth-down attempts. I saw your criticism after the game, and you're absolutely right. Even one field goal eases the pressure on the whole unit. Now, I'm not saying we aren't going to keep being aggressive, that's my bread and butter, but we are going to be more tactical about it going forward."

BT: "It had been over ten years since we last saw a regular season clash between the first and second ranked teams in the nation, but suddenly this season we're being given a second helping. You guys dominated the first matchup against Georgia, what's the pressure like externally to do it again, especially after last week's narrow win?"

AL: "Every W is the same whether you get it by 50 points or 1 point, Boone. We don't care what the bottom line is, except getting another notch in the win column. And it's more than just a win. We're both undefeated and that means whoever emerges victorious has the edge in the conference standings. That matters more to us than winning another 1 vs. 2 matchup, I can tell you that."

BT: "We expected it to happen at some point, he is still a freshman after all, but Markelle Nickey looked like a shadow of the confident young man who was briefly in the Heisman conversation earlier this year. Is there any concern on your part about an encore performance against the #1 defense in the nation?"

AL: "Now, take this comment with a grain of salt, 'cause I ain't saying Nick is the next coming. But Manning, Brady, Favre, Montana; they all had bad games. It happens, no matter who you are. Our confidence level in Nick is the same it's been all season. And I just want to point out, Boone, he may have had a rough game. But when the chips were on the table, he made the plays to get us to overtime, then took care of business once we got there. That's the kind of leader he is."

I understand that Auburn can't control the quality of opponent they've played this year, but they scream paper tiger to me. Take Miami out of the equation—and who doesn't beat Miami in a prime-time matchup, let's be honest—and they haven't played a team that was more than one game over .500. That doesn't instill fear, that shows a team getting by without facing a real challenge.

Yes, Auburn has the #1 defense in the nation. But, is that a result of their talent, or the lack of talent they've faced this season? I'm betting on the latter.

We spanked a much better Georgia team less than three weeks ago; I expect us to make light work of these lil' Tigers.

45 Oklahoma, 10 Auburn.

Oklahoma Survives Another Test As They Secure An SEC Championship Berth
Boone Tillman // Sooner BornPublished: November 16th, 2030

For the second straight game, the Oklahoma Sooners were put to the test. And for the second time, they passed with flying colors. This time, they dispatched the second-ranked Auburn Tigers, who were previously undefeated, with a 31-21 victory that was defined by defensive stands with the game on the line.

But, before we get to the impressive final pair of defensive stands, the Auburn Tigers briefly held the lead. After two straight three-and-outs, where Markelle Nickey looked like a newborn deer, the Auburn Tigers were able to push their second possession into the end zone, with Auburn QB Glen Ramsour taking a play directly out of the Sooners' playbook with an RPO to the TE for the 5-yard score.

Oklahoma would roar back with their own touchdown drive, with Nickey finding Darren Lyles on an in-route despite the pass rush bearing down on him, showing the poise that continues to leave the coaching staff adamant he's their guy despite what was another up-and-down performance. Nickey would toss a second touchdown pass late in the half, giving Oklahoma the lead for good, even though the game was far from finished.

Poised to tie the game going into the half, Glen Ramsour called his own number on the next Tigers possession, but instead of finding room to run, he found the stiff shoulder of Tyler Jacques, who rattled the QB to force a fumble. That fumble would turn into a 2-yard Brad Thorne touchdown as Oklahoma took a 21-7 lead into the half.

Typically, this would be the spot where the Sooners begin pulling away, but there would be no runaway freight train in Auburn. Back-to-back interceptions by Nickey finally sparked the Tigers, as Alton Stokke finally found some room to gallop, turning a routine pitch play into an electric 58-yard run. Just like that, Auburn was suddenly roaring to life, only trailing 21-14 as the third quarter neared its conclusion.

For all the criticism Armando Leon took last week for his aggressiveness on fourth down, he deserves just as much praise for how he handled the first drive of the fourth quarter. The Sooners offense took the field with just over a minute left in the third quarter and by the time Brian Rowe's 35-yard field goal split the uprights, the Sooners had drained the fourth quarter clock down to just over six minutes.

Glen Ramsour wasn't ready to go calmly into the night, however, connecting on a 22-yard completion to tight end Alani Ramsay before unleashing an absolute rocket on fourth-and-eight to Chad Bull, who hauled in the 61-yard bomb right in the face of Ja'Darius Pleasants. Two plays later and Cornell North bruised his way in for a one-yard touchdown, and suddenly the only difference was the field goal Leon elected to kick.

Auburn's defense stiffened, limiting the Sooners offense to a meager three-and-out that only drained one minute from the game clock, and Auburn had the opportunity to be the first team to hand the Sooners a loss in over a calendar year.

Tyler Jacques would have none of that. With 2:35 remaining and an opportunity to win the game, Ramsour dropped back hoping to unleash another missile. Instead, Jacques grounded him with a nine-yard sack that derailed the entire drive for Auburn. Two completions that totaled six yards left Auburn hoping for a prayer on fourth-and-13. Miraculously, Ramsour found Miguel Sensabaugh open on a crossing route and it appeared the Tigers had new life, then Alan Breckner laid the lumber and the ball fell harmlessly to the turf.

In a move that Leon was less critical of than many thought he should be, Isaac Adcock slashed in from 15 yards out after the turnover on downs, widening the lead to 10, but allowing Auburn another opportunity to make some magic.

Jacques would tally another sack and a half on the final Auburn drive, before nearly getting another sack on the 4th-and-13 attempt. Instead of a sack, Jacques put enough of a hit on Ramsour where the pass fluttered hopelessly to the turf, and this time, Oklahoma took a knee to end their second straight test with a victory.

Question One - Meg Semental (SEC Network): "Coach Leon, what a dominant finish by your defense that gave up its fair share of yards in the contest, but battened down the hatches when the game was on the line. What I want to ask, however, is how many suicides is Isaac Adcock going to be running after taking that touchdown late in the fourth quarter, instead of getting down to kill time with Auburn out of timeouts?"

Armando Leon: "No more than normal, Meg. Listen, the knee-jerk reaction is to lambast the kid for not making the smart play, which would be to get down, kill the clock, and ensure no funny business happens in the final 90 seconds. But, he's also a human. A young athlete, in a big game, with a ton of adrenaline running through him. Would he be getting all kinds of praise had he put that aside and realized the heads-up play? Definitely. He recognized it by the time he got back to the sideline, we had a conversation. That's the end of it. At the end of the day, I can't say I wouldn't do the same thing in his shoes. We won the game, and that's what is important."

Question Two: Chuck Moogle (The Auburn Plainsman): "The main talk of the game will be the pair of stands your defense put together with the game on the line. But, what about your offense? After building a 21-7 lead going into the half, it looked like they were a shell of themselves after the half. Nickey threw a pair of interceptions and the running game didn't have the same burst as it did in the first half. Is that a cause for concern as you prepare for the conference championship in a few weeks, with the playoffs most likely after?"

Armando Leon: "Credit to Auburn, they have a top-notch defense and made some key adjustments coming out of the halftime. They stacked the box, but did a great job disguising where guys were going. It caught Nick off guard a few times, with a guy he thought was coming hot, dropping into coverage instead. They are all fixable things, that will be addressed in the coming week. What matters is, when the game was on the line, we came through. Whether that's offensively or defensively, is irrelevant. We win as a team and lose as a team, period."

Question Three - James McDavid (OU Daily): "Tyler Jacques was disciplined a few weeks ago and you said afterwards you hoped he "came back as the leader we all know he is." Today, he was the man who made every game-changing play for your defense. Is that the type of leadership you wanted to see out of him?"

Armando Leon: "Yes and no, James. Leading on the field is an important part of his job, and he's always done that in spades. What we needed was the secondary stuff; picking guys up, holding himself and others accountable, and making sure that everyone stays locked in. You saw that today, he wasn't just beating his own drum, they were doing it as a team. That was the difference, and we talked about it a lot after the incident. You just love when a guy takes the criticism and instead of folding in on himself, takes it and uses it to get better."

I'll be honest, I didn't see this game as nearly the challenge it presented. Which leads me to wonder, did we already peak?

Back-to-back teams that when the year began, we would have put well below the likes of Georgia, Alabama, or Oregon. Yet, here we are. Needing overtime and fourth-quarter heroics to topple Notre Dame and Auburn.

Now listen, I'm not trying to take anything away from either program. They played a heckuva game each time, it just feels like we're out here almost beating ourselves. It's a long season, maybe the boys have just gotten bored of the competition and are ready for the playoffs.

Which is scary as all hell. Because, that's when good teams play down, and suddenly you're getting your bell rocked.

Like an LSU program that is a far cry from their glory days.

We won, but how long we can keep winning ugly games remains to be seen.

I meant to address that in the post-game and forgot. But no. Georgia is #2 and beat Tennessee already this year. Auburn is #3 and plays Tennessee. Georgia is in with a win, or an Auburn loss. If Georgia loses, but Auburn wins then they in. No way for Tennessee to sneak in since even if they beat Auburn, Georgia will have the tiebreaker. The outlier is Alabama. if they beat Georgia, then beat Auburn in the Iron Bowl, they would overtake Georgia.

the two interceptions hurt. One was a misread on my part, the other Nickey got hit on the throw and the DL snagged the duck.

2030 Week Thirteen Preview - LSU (7-4) @ #1 Oklahoma (11-0)
Boone Tillman // Sooner BornPublished: November 29th, 2030

The talk all season has been about how the Oklahoma Sooners have gone a full calendar year since their last loss, but Oklahoma is trending toward even more history. With each win, the Sooners grow ever closer to becoming the first undefeated Sooners team since the 2000 Sooners that won the National Championship. All that stands between us and an undefeated regular season is a Senior Night clash with the LSU Tigers.

Now, I know we won the National Championship last year. But, something about going undefeated on the way makes it that much sweeter. But, before we can start drinking that sweet tea, we have to take care of business against the Tigahs.

If you don't know the drill by now, you must be new 'round these parts. After the graphic, we'll dive right into the "Schooner Scoop" as we discuss the various scenarios for our counterpart in the SEC Championship Game, as well as a Heisman-sized hole in the lineup.

Schooner Scoop

BT: "I know everyone wants to get your take on who you guys want to see in the SEC Championship Game matchup, but before we get to that, we have urgent matters to discuss. What's the word on Heisman front-runner Brad Thorne after he left practice early yesterday, Coach?"

AL: "Not good I'm afraid. Brad suffered an AC Joint Sprain when he took an awkward fall during 7-on-7 drills. The docs are pretty confident he'll be a full go come playoff time, but he's for sure out tomorrow against LSU and more than likely, on the sideline for the SEC Championship Game."

BT: "With Dillon already on the shelf, though I hear he is nearing a return, and now Brad alongside him, how much pressure does that put on Terrance Butcher, who has been up and down with his own health this season?"

AL: "We don't change the game plan, Boone. Butch can tote the rock and should he get a little dinged up again? Deon Bull is more than ready to put a hurting on a few defenders. We should have Dillon back for the conference championship game, so we just have to survive one game with a diminished backfield. But, like I said, we've got all the faith in the guys who are healthy right now, we'll be fine."

BT: "Moving on to the SEC Championship Game. Two weeks ago, many thought it would be a rematch with either Georgia or Auburn in the Championship Game, with Georgia owning a tiebreaker over the Vols. But now, suddenly Alabama is right in the mix as well. If they defeat Auburn, they'd leapfrog the Bulldogs thanks to the tiebreaker and end up in Atlanta, instead of Georgia. If you had a pick, which one would you rather face and why?"

AL: "I don't give a flip, Boone. We'll be ready for whoever lines up against us. And that's the honest truth. I've got enough to worry about making sure the seniors go out on top tomorrow, I haven't even thought about Atlanta in two weeks. Whoever it is, I hope they're ready to bite the belt again, 'cause we're bringing it."

I'm not going to doubt Coach Leon at this point, but I do have concerns with Brad Thorne out. Brad is more than a running back, he's our leading receiver. That shows you the level of comfort Markelle Nickey has in him—that's the first place he looks when things get hairy.

We aren't going to sit here and pretend Nickey hasn't struggled the last few weeks and now, you're taking away the guy he depends on most? It smells rotten to me and if we're going to lose a game this season, this has all the makings of an upset.

But like I said, I ain't going against Coach till he gives me a reason to, but I do expect another close one.
