The Reclamation Initiative | The Coaching Career of Nico Augustine

Saturday, November 15, 2030 | Stanford Stadium (Stanford, CA)
Week 12 Preview: at Stanford (5-4, 4-3)
Synopsis
If Vanderbilt proved not to be a trap game, it seems as though SMU has clear airways to navigate until their final game of the season against a stout Oklahoma Sooners team trying to measure up. Until then, the Mustangs will be taking on mid-level Stanford Cardinal team in Palo Alto that has a little bit of punch to their offense, but not much else.
The Cardinal are particularly impressive in any facet of the game, with quarterback Markelle Samia producing mediocre numbers at best in the pass game. On the ground, running back Dell Shabazz is averaging 5.9 yards every touch and has proven to be somewhat adequate catching balls from out of the backfield. Against one of the best defensive units in the country against the run, however, Shabazz should be bottled up, forcing Stanford to win through the air.
The Mustangs took a shot against Vanderbilt in the form of losing star tight end Bobby Goodspeed for the remainder of the season with a torn pectoral and running back Dwayne Sowells for the second time this season with a dislocated knee. Sowells is expected to be back by the end of the regular season. Goodspeed hasn't really taken off as the team's top tight end after the graduation of Dwayne Kasay last year even after a red-hot start. Lionel Davenport is more than expected to make up the difference in the pass game.
Meanwhile for Sowells, the team has certainly veered in the direction of freshman Shaq Thomas being the breadwinner in the backfield. A mix of Brian Volson and Cal McCalebb should more than make up the relief effort backing him up against a Stanford team fighting for bowl eligibility.
