Saturday November 24, 2029 | 3:15 PM | DATCU Stadium | Denton, Texas

Denton, Texas -
For the second consecutive season, South Florida is headed to the American Conference Championship Game.

Behind a dominant rushing attack, efficient quarterback play, and another strong defensive performance, the Bulls closed out the regular season with a convincing 45-19 victory over North Texas. The win secures USF's place atop the conference standings and gives the program another opportunity to bring home a conference title.

North Texas struck first midway through the opening quarter when James Toledo connected on a 39-yard field goal, but the lead would be short-lived. Locklan Hewlett answered with a methodical drive that culminated in a five-yard touchdown pass to Josh Barr with 2:12 remaining in the quarter, giving the Bulls a 7-3 lead.

The second quarter turned the game into a showcase for the USF ground game.

Connor Suggs capped a pair of scoring drives with touchdown runs of six and fifteen yards just 27 seconds apart, stretching the Bulls' lead to 21-3. After Dom Bragg added a 33-yard field goal, North Texas managed a late field goal from Toledo before halftime, but USF still carried a comfortable 24-6 advantage into the locker room.

Suggs continued his standout afternoon in the third quarter, powering into the end zone from one yard out for his third touchdown of the game. North Texas found no answers offensively and relied on the leg of Toledo, who drilled field goals from 57 and 32 yards to keep the Mean Green within striking distance at 31-12 entering the final period.

Any hopes of a comeback disappeared early in the fourth quarter.

Steven Snead capped a scoring drive with an eight-yard touchdown run to push the lead back to 26 points. North Texas answered with a short Rico Poe touchdown run, but the Bulls delivered the final blow late in the contest when backup quarterback Joshua Brantley entered the game and found Dominick Moncrief for a one-yard touchdown pass with just over a minute remaining.

The final score hardly reflected how thoroughly South Florida controlled the afternoon.

The Bulls piled up 473 yards of offense while averaging 7.4 yards per play. They recorded 30 first downs compared to just 15 for North Texas and converted an impressive 72 percent of their third-down opportunities. USF's offense consistently sustained drives, reaching the red zone seven times and scoring on six of those trips.

Suggs once again led the charge on the ground, rushing 15 times for 122 yards and three touchdowns. The junior averaged over eight yards per carry and repeatedly broke through the North Texas front for chunk gains. Snead added 34 rushing yards and a touchdown while Nicholas Daniel and George Shembo combined for another 28 yards as the Bulls finished with 184 rushing yards and four touchdowns.

Hewlett continued his steady season, completing 25 of 37 passes for 271 yards and a touchdown. While he did not produce the explosive touchdown totals seen earlier in the year, the veteran quarterback efficiently directed an offense that never punted and controlled the game from start to finish.

His favorite target was Lyle Dragos, who hauled in eight receptions for 123 yards. Moncrief added five catches and a touchdown, while Barr finished with five receptions and the game's opening touchdown. Gerald Camarda also contributed five catches for 44 yards.

Defensively, the Bulls were equally impressive.

North Texas managed only 58 rushing yards on 14 attempts and converted just four of thirteen third-down opportunities. Armon Chambers led the defense with 12 tackles, while Nick Jones added seven stops and Gavin Jenkins chipped in six. The game's lone interception came courtesy of Ja'Quan Bean, who picked off Ryan Byrne to halt a North Texas drive.

The Mean Green found some success through the air as Byrne completed 24 of 40 passes for 246 yards, with Shandon King leading all North Texas receivers with eight catches for 98 yards. However, repeated stalled drives forced the visitors to settle for four field goals from Toledo, preventing them from ever mounting a serious threat.

USF's overall dominance in yardage, possession, and situational football proved overwhelming. The Bulls finished with 548 total yards, nearly 130 more than North Texas, and never allowed the Mean Green to score an offensive touchdown until the fourth quarter.

Now the focus shifts to championship week.

After earning another trip to the AAC Championship Game, South Florida will have an opportunity to finish the conference season the same way it ended last year: playing for a title. With Hewlett operating the offense at a high level, Suggs running as well as any back in the nation, and a defense that continues to force opponents into mistakes, the Bulls enter championship week playing their best football of the season.
