‣ 'Canes fail to make Rashaad Jackson's top three

The number one ranked safety in high school football Rashaad Jackson announced his top three on Instagram yesterday and Miami did not make it.

Jackson had USF, Georgia and Florida in his top three after a recent visit to the Bulls on Saturday. Miami was on Jackson's top five list which was released two months ago and at some point this summer, Miami was considered the favorite to land Jackson.

Miami may have lost out on Jackson but they're closing in on the top ranked strong safety in Kevin Whitlock out of Delaware. Whitlock will be in Miami when the Hurricanes play the Hokies in two weeks in what promises to be a star-studded event.

Five-star receiver Ryan Barr will be there as well as four-star defensive lineman Corey Grant.

Miami at Georgia Tech Preview
Adriana Edwards - Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

Miami (No. 2 BCS, 8-0, 4-0 ACC) entered the season with hopes of another double-digit win season and competing for the ACC championship. They then lose their starting quarterback, leading rusher and a contributor at receiver. The hope at that point was to just make it through the season and find out what they have in their true freshman quarterback.

They're now four wins away from an undefeated regular season.

The Hurricanes are fresh off a bye week, ready to face off against a Georgia Tech (5-3, 4-2) team that is fighting for their Coastal lives. Virginia Tech's latest struggles have kept the Yellow Jackets afloat after losing three straight games following a 4-0 start that included a 45-38 win over Clemson.

‣ Four-star DT Corey Grant cancels visit to Miami

Four-star defensive tackle Corey Grant has cancelled his visit to Miami and will not be attending the Virginia Tech game according to a source close to the situation.

Grant, the nation's number two ranked defensive tackle, visited Florida last week and UCF two weeks ago. Grant joins top ranked safety and fellow four-star safety Rashaad Jackson as recruits to cancel their visits after visiting Florida.

Even with Grant and Jackson out, it is expected to be a star-studded event with the nation's top ranked recruit Ryan Barr, a five-star receiver, visiting along with four-star DE Tyler Beard, four-star safety Kevin Whitlock, two-star JUCO quarterback John Harrison, three-star offensive tackle Christian Perry, three-star offensive guard Marcus May and three-star JUCO cornerback Kellen Daniel.

Miami will try to land commitments from John Harrison as QB target Phillip Davis out of Washington is now leaning towards USC. Miami is worried that if USC can land Davis, it might help their chances with Barr as they are both expected to visit USC at the same time. It is fair criticism of the staff that Miami could have pushed harder for Davis and by extension, helped them in their pursuit of Barr who is leaning towards USC at this point.

Miami did add some fresh faces to their board as they offered three-star offensive tackle Melvin Reyes, three-star tight end Thomas McLaughlin, four-star athlete Derek Thompson and three-star JUCO athlete Jason Dunn.

These scholarships come likely because Miami is worried that Florida State has jumped in the Christian Perry conversation and Notre Dame is now considered the leader for four-star tight end Kevin Sanders, once a Miami lock.

Virginia Tech at Miami Preview
Adriana Edwards - Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

In an alternate universe where Bubba Baxa makes just some of his kicks, Miami is the top ranked team in the country and getting ready to host their biggest home game of the season when Virginia Tech (6-3, 4-2) comes into town. While that universe isn't reality, Miami (No. 9 AP, 8-1, 4-1) finds itself in a reality that isn't all doom and gloom either. Manny Diaz's job his week was the remind his team of that.

"We still have the Coastal, we still have Charlotte, all of our goals from the beginning of spring football is still in front of us," said Diaz.

Miami can clinch the Coastal with a win and Georgia Tech loss. But should the Hurricanes falter and Georgia Tech also wins, Miami will be out of the running from the Coastal. It was all good just a week ago.

Virginia Tech is tough and proven with road games at Notre Dame, Ohio State and Boston College, all ranked opponents. Virginia Tech's lone loss to an unraked team is at UNC where they came out flat.
