BREAKING NEWS: Nico Augustine out as Head Coach at SMU, eyeing LSU position
By Veronica Downs | SMU Daily

DALLAS -- The most shocking yet still expected news has officially landed. After five seasons as the head coach for SMU, Nico Augustine and the Mustangs have mutually agreed to part ways. The team is preparing to promote offensive coordinator Jeff Traylor to take over for Augustine as their new head coach.

Augustine was hired by SMU in the summer before the 2027 season, taking over for predecessor Rhett Lashlee after he took the job at Arkansas fresh after leading the Mustangs to the College Football Playoffs. With high expectations, Augustine ushered in an era of college football that featured the Mustangs at the forefront, winning a National Championship in 2029 and reaching the Finals the following year before the Mustangs made the shocking move of moving conferences, shifting from a dominant run of three consecutive ACC championships to the SEC.

Once in the SEC, SMU finished the season with an undefeated record in conference play before defeating the Georgia Bulldogs in the SEC championship game. The Bulldogs would get their revenge on the way to their own National Championship, ousting Augustine and the Mustangs in the second round of the College Football Playoffs after scoring 22 points in the fourth quarter to defeat SMU 42-35.

The Mustangs are already feeling the reaction of this mountainous move, as freshman quarterback Steven Bequette announced immediately after news broke of his coach’s firing that he will be entering into the transfer portal. Junior cornerback Cole Crews also announced that he will be foregoing his senior season and entering the NFL draft. The Mustangs, under new leadership, will need to replace their starting quarterback and number one corner heading into a season of uncertainty.

This also doesn’t bode well for an impressive recruiting class Augustine and co. were building, including five-star quarterback Zach Mixon and five-star running back Earl Worthy.

Augustine leaves SMU with a record of 67-7, giving him an eye-popping 90% winning record. He hits the coaching carousel as one of the biggest names in recent history to be looking for a new home. The odds of him shifting from one SEC team to another seems to be the leading theory.

The lowly LSU Tigers have fallen on hard times, finishing near the bottom of the SEC standings after a disappointing tenure under former head coach Josh Heupel which ended in his firing. LSU has been desperate to return them to their glory days in the upper echelon of the SEC, battling the likes of Alabama and Georgia. Who better to usher in a new dawn than one of the winningest coaches in recent history?

However, this is not a full-blown conclusion as of just yet, as rumors are also swirling that Augustine may take a break from coaching altogether. Analysts have cited the exhaustion that the NCAA investigating SMU for conduct during his tenure, as well as his reported deteriorating relationship with the athletics department at SMU has left him looking for a reprieve.

Though news out of the Nico Augustine camp has been quiet upon this revealing, it is expected that the former Coordinator of the Year trophy recipient will announce his plans going forward within the coming days.

That’s a tough one. You had them and couldn’t hold on.

Interesting development with the firing and possible new job :ooo:
