Nickey Nearly Perfect As Sooners Trounce Longhorns
Boone Tillman // Sooner BornPublished: October 11th, 2031

The Oklahoma Sooners entered the Red River Shootout undefeated against our most hated rival under head coach Armando Leon, a fact Leon will proudly be able to boast for another year after his Sooners throttled the Longhorns 49-24 at the Cotton Bowl under the blazing Texas' sun.

Both offenses were in peak form during the electric first half, with a pair of sacks on the Longhorns' second drive the only thing that kept the boys in burnt orange from keeping up with our crimson and cream heroes. In fact, the Sooners were a perfect four-for-four in the first half, needing a 3-yard completion to Maurice Lucky on fourth down to extend their lead to 21-7.

However, while the Sooners were a slow, yet steady, engine churning down the field, the Texas Longhorns were a Ferrari. Each of Oklahoma's four scoring drives exceeded at least ten plays each, while Texas' own drives were five plays or less. After an electric kickoff return following Lucky's third touchdown catch of the afternoon, that pushed the Sooners' lead to 28-10, Spiegel and the Texas offense only needed two plays, spanning 32 yards, before Spiegel found Tony Vallejo in the endzone to cut into the Sooners lead going into the half trailing 28-17.

After the first half explosion, many thought the second half would bring more of the same. The Oklahoma Sooners got the memo, but the Longhorns appeared to be used up after the break. Oklahoma scored 21 straight points, two more Maurice Lucky touchdowns before Nickey earned a rare rushing touchdown for himself, before Spiegel could muster a final drive to buoy the Longhorns' shattered confidence.

While Maurice Lucky set the Sooners' new single-game receiving touchdown record, all of the talk after the game was about Markelle Nickey's dazzling performance. Nickey was nearly perfect on the afternoon, going a crisp 41 of 44 for 398 yards and five touchdowns, marking his second straight game with five or more touchdowns after the rough outing against the Oregon Ducks.

Post-game, Armando Leon praised the work of his sophomore quarterback following the humbling loss.

•••

Question One - James McDavid (OU Daily): "Coach Leon. Two games ago, Markelle Nickey threw three interceptions and barely completed over 50% of his passes in the narrow loss to Oregon. Since then, he's nearly had as many touchdowns (10), as incompletions (12). How can you explain his sudden streak of pin-point accuracy?"

Armando Leon: "There's no secret to it, James. He simply put in the work. Some guys would pull their horns in after that humbling loss, get conservative, and play timid. Not Nick. He got back in the lab, fine-tuned his mechanics, and made sure that when he was on that field, he knew exactly where he was going with the ball. That's not luck, that's commitment to excellence. There is a reason he's the captain; he exemplifies what Sooner Football is all about."

Question Two - Meg Semental (SEC Network): "Speaking of Luck, let's talk about Maurice Lucky's record-breaking outing. Was it part of the game plan to target him early and often in the red zone, or was it more of Markelle taking what the defense gave him, to the tune of five touchdowns?"

Armando Leon: "They were playing one of their linebackers on Mo most of the night, and to be frank, we loved that matchup. Watching film from last year, there were more than a few plays that Mo had his man beat and Nick just didn't see him. We went into the preparation this week knowing that and looking to exploit it. Markelle knew the call; if Mo had one of the slower Texas linebackers on him, that was his first read, regardless of what the play call was. Game planning only gets you so far though, so hats off to both Nick and Mo, they made the plays that won the game and ultimately, got them in the record books."

Question Three - Mick Moorestead (The Daily Texan): "All of the talk about this game is going to center on Markelle Nickey's performance, but what about Ethan Spiegel? If it wasn't for Nickey's outstanding game, he'd be the talk of the town with only three incompletions and over 300 yards. When he had time, he shredded your defense. What did you see from him and the Longhorns offense that makes them scary in a potential SEC Championship rematch?"

Armando Leon: "Texas always has an explosive offense, Mick, no debates there. The difference is, we put them in as many long yardage situations as possible and live with the results. They got some chunk plays on us. But I think the most important stat to consider is this: Texas had fewer offensive yards as a team than Spiegel did passing yards. Because of sacks and tackles for loss. Those plays matter, and we made them count tonight. Should we match up again this season, I have no doubt they'll get some more chunk plays. We'll get ours, too."

•••

I gotta tell ya, folks, how Markelle Nickey responded after that Oregon loss is GROWN MAN football. He didn't pout, didn't point the finger. He went right back to work and proved why he's a champion.

Texas thought they were finally going to catch us slipping. Thought they saw some chinks in the ol' armor. Instead, they got handed back-to-back losses and are firmly on the outside looking in for the SEC Championship Game, and potentially even the postseason.

Take that explosive offense and shove it, Mick, because when push came to shove, your boys got pushed out of the game.

Holy smokes your passing game obliterated them :fml:

“Grown man football” is actually an understatement to how good of a bounce back that was.

Honestly, even I was surprised at a few of the throws he made. I didn't get a screen of it, but Nickey hit Booker on a comeback with a perfect back shoulder along the sideline *chefkiss*

2031 Week Seven Preview - #2 Oklahoma (5-1) @ Vanderbilt (2-3)
Boone Tillman // Sooner BornPublished: October 16th, 2031

After three-consecutive ranked matchups the Oklahoma Sooners get a relative reprieve this week with a short road trip to face the Vanderbilt Commodores. Just don't tell Armando Leon that.

We'll see how the hapless Commodores match up against the defending two-time National Champions before we jump right into the latest "Schooner Scoop" where Leon stresses the importance of staying in the moment as the season hits its midway point.

Schooner Scoop

BT: "Some would say the Oklahoma Sooners have a veritable FCS squad on the schedule this week with the lowly Commodores playing host. But something tells me you'll be pushing back on that notion, Coach?"

AL: "Absolutely. I was once that team on the other side. The team that everyone would call a cupcake. Sometimes we lost, sometimes we won. But I made damn sure that those teams were prepared like they were going to win. I expect no less of Vanderbilt this weekend. The nation may have written them off already, but we haven't. We know that if we come in here lackadaisical that we're going to get our bell rung. It's business as usual this week, same as every week."

BT: "Markelle Nickey has been in the headlines since last week's awe-inspiring performance, but I want to pivot to someone else. What kind of impact has Tyler Ryder had in the starting lineup since he made the transition, and how has that helped stabilize the offense?"

AL: "Nickey gets all of the attention, and don't get me wrong he deserves that. But the impact Ty has had is substantial. Prior to him hitting the starting lineup, our running game was sporadic and didn't take any pressure off the passing game, it actually added pressure. With Ty back there chewing up yardage when his number is called, Nick doesn't feel like he has to make a first-down throw every time. He can play within the offense, take what the defense gives him, and count on being able to get some help on early downs. That's been the biggest key to our recent surge."

BT: "Your secondary struggled a bit with big plays against Texas. I know that's always been the cost of doing business for your aggressive defense, but how much does facing a young, inexperienced QB like Forrest Fina help a unit regain its confidence after a game like Spiegel had?"

AL: "Everybody always wants to point to an inexperienced QB and say the defense has the advantage, but everyone forgets: we don't have tape on him, either. So we're kind of going in blind, learning on the fly. It'll depend on which side, our defense or their offense, gets the first momentum-swinging type of play. If it's us? I feel bad for Forrest."

Ain't no reason to sugar-coat this one, ladies and gentlemen. Barring an upset of colossal proportions, this is a runaway Sooner victory.

Hatchett Plays Hero As Questions Swirl About Markelle Nickey After Sooners' Victory
Boone Tillman // Sooner BornPublished: October 17th, 2031

For the first drive, Markelle Nickey still looked like he was riding the heater of his last outing, completing 6 of his 8 passes for 71 yards and a touchdown on the Oklahoma Sooners' opening drive.

Then, the wheels fell off. Nickey suddenly regressed, throwing three consecutive interceptions as his mistakes snowballed. His first interception was a tipped pass at the line that the linebacker snagged. His second, a poorly timed curl route that Eric Boss easily stepped in front of and deposited into the Vanderbilt end zone. The third? Another off-balance pass as Nickey attempted to muscle out the throw before being sacked.

I couldn't tell you what was worse, folks, the pick, or seeing Nickey crumpled on the ground after the hit. He would eventually return to the sideline under his own power, but was quickly ushered into the locker room and would not return.

In retrospect, that may have been the best thing for the Oklahoma Sooners. Facing a 10-7 deficit, thanks to a robust defensive effort that held the Commodores to a single field goal after the defensive touchdown, AJ Hatchett took over.

By halftime, the Sooners were ahead 21-7 after a pair of pinpoint drives by the former four-star prospect.

By the third quarter, it was 35-7. Vanderbilt would tack on a late touchdown, an explosive 62-yard catch and run by Connor Winfree, then the pressure got to Forrest Fina, who ended his day with three consecutive interceptions.

After the game, Armando Leon praised the readiness of AJ Hatchett while being vague, at best, about the status of Markelle Nickey.

•••

Question One - James McDavid (OU Daily): "Before I get into the more critical question I have, first I must ask, how is Markelle Nickey? And what exactly sidelined him during the second quarter?"

Armando Leon: "Nick is in good spirits, I'm told. He suffered an injury to his midsection and that's all I can comment on at this time. He still has to see the doctor, probably get some x-rays. It would be in poor taste to speculate now, without all the facts."

Question Two - Jay Hickson (The Vanderbilt Hustle): "Coach, to follow up on James' question. Nickey seemed to once again get bit by the interception bug prior to his injury. Was there any thought between yourself and offensive coordinator Garrett Riley about benching Markelle prior to the injury, or was it a blessing in disguise?"

Armando Leon: "That is an extremely unfair and, to be frank, lowbrow question, Jay. Markelle Nickey is the captain of the offense. To think that we would not only celebrate his injury, but consider it a blessing, is baseless and reckless. We are pleased that AJ was as prepared as he was, and that speaks to his character and commitment to our football team, regardless of what happened to Nick. But to think we are celebrating an injury to the leader of our team is ludicrous."

Question Three - Meg Semental (SEC Network): "Coach, moving to the defense. Aside from a few big runs by Tyler Stoneburner, your defense kept the Commodores at bay all evening until that late touchdown. Your defense responded to giving up their first touchdown by sealing the game with three consecutive interceptions. What was it about that final touchdown that sparked a rejuvenation in your defense?"

Armando Leon: "That's just their competitive spirit, Meg. We were content to sit back and let them dink and dunk, drain the clock, and escape with the win. Then, Fina brought out the long gun and the boys got on their horse. You caught us slipping once, that's on us. But there damn sure won't be a second time, so long as we have a say in it. He tried to push it deep again and paid the price."

•••

This is a touchy subject, folks, and not one I'm going to dissect today. At the end of the day, we got the win because we prepare like a champion. AJ was ready, should he ever be needed, to step into the limelight and he delivered. Lest we forget, this is the first live action AJ has gotten since playing in mop-up duty as a true freshman.

I'm going to hold the celebration off until we hear about Nickey. Because if he is seriously hurt, you have to wonder if this is a "won the battle, not the war," type of situation.
