Sooners Send Seniors Out In Style Behind Adcock's Four Touchdown Effort
Boone Tillman // Sooner BornPublished: November 8th, 2031

It was yet another inauspiciously slow start for the Oklahoma Sooners, but in the end they buckled down and pulled away in a 38-17 victory over the Kentucky Wildcats to send the seniors out in style.

Both offenses struggled in the first half as the Sooners went into the locker room with a paltry 10-3 lead, but the defense kick-started the second half as the Sooners put the pedal down to pull away.

Kentucky opened the second half with possession, looking to march the field and tie the game. Instead, Alex Kumar overthrew his target and the errant pass found the waiting hands of Isaac Heeney, who trotted 30 yards into the end zone. A quick three-and-out followed for the Wildcats before Isaac Adcock scored his second of his four touchdowns, pushing the lead to 24-3.

Kentucky scored their first touchdown late in the third quarter, then a second one to cut the deficit to 31-17 with just over three minutes in the game. Kentucky felt they were within striking distance and opted for the on-side kick. Instead, Oklahoma recovered the ball, then Isaac Adcock exploded for 45 yards on the next play for his fourth touchdown to officially put away the Wildcats.

Question One - James McDavid (OU Daily): "A bit of a sluggish start for the offense again, Coach Leon, before the defense once again sparked the momentum. Are there any concerns that at some point, the defense is going to falter and your offense won't have the ability to fight back?"

Armando Leon: "None at all, James. I think it's safe to say we have the best defense in the country. Even if we give up a few early touchdowns, I think in the long run we've got the talent to keep even the most talented offenses at bay. We'll be fine."

Question Two - Dre Al (The Kentucky Kernel): "Kumar once again found some big plays in your secondary, but your defense continued their stellar job of limiting the scoring on those big plays. How does having an opportunistic defense help atone for those lapses?"

Armando Leon: "Our guys are instructed to jump routes if they've got a read. Sometimes, they do it prematurely and it burns us. But that's the risk you live with to make big plays. Today, even though we gave up a few bombs, we avoided getting put in the toaster. Having guys who don't look at giving up a big play as a failure, but rather an opportunity to improve, helps us all to keep focused on the next play."

Question Three - Meg Semental (SEC Network): "I've got to ask, Coach. With Markelle Nickey scheduled to return in two weeks—and Oklahoma on a bye next week—who is the early favorite to take the field at Neyland Stadium under center?"

Armando Leon: "A quarterback would be the preferred option, Meg."

Listen, I like AJ Hatchett. He's a good kid. He stuck around for the right reasons, even with Nick in front of him.

But there's a reason he got beat out by Nickey. Because, he just doesn't have it.

I hope we realize that now and are appreciative a little more with Nick when he returns, which I have no doubts he will.

2031 #3 Oklahoma (9-1) @ #5 Tennessee (9-1)
Boone Tillman // Sooner BornPublished: November 21st, 2031

There may be two games left in the regular season, but the magic number for the Oklahoma Sooners to clinch a spot in their third straight SEC Championship Game is down to one. Fittingly, former Sooner Josh Heupel and his Tennessee Volunteers stand in the way.

With such a high-stakes matchup, including some controversy surrounding the return of Markelle Nickey, we've got plenty to talk about in the latest "Schooner Scoop."

Schooner Scoop

BT: "Before we get to the matchup, we've got to talk quarterback. Markelle Nickey was cleared as a full participant for practice over the bye week. To the surprise of many. Nickey was proclaimed as the starter before ever setting foot on the practice field, where many were quick to note that AJ Hatchett scarcely left the bench. What went into that decision?"

AL: "It's simple, Boone. He's our National Championship quarterback. We ride with him until the wheels fall off. I may have been noncommittal about the future in an effort to keep the opposition at bay, but there was never a doubt in our building who was going to be under center once Nick was healthy."

BT: "With Florida's loss a few weeks ago, the Sooners stand alone as the only undefeated team in SEC conference play. With a win against Tennessee, the third straight SEC Championship appearance is locked. What kind of pressure does that put on the squad to perform knowing that one of your goals before the season is in reach?"

AL: "It was certainly one of our goals, but most definitely not the best one. We can't lose sight of the ultimate prize. Trophies are nice, rivalry wins are nice, but in the end we're all playing to win the National Championship."

BT: "Tennessee enters the game with their own Heisman finalist at quarterback in Benji Lemmons, a true dual-threat quarterback. He's only thrown two interceptions and has shown great awareness in the pocket with 10 sacks on the season. What do you have to do defensively to ensure this doesn't become his Heisman moment?"

AL: "Simple, Boone. Hit him. Hard. Often. And without mercy. Obviously, fully within the confines of the NCAA rule book. Even if we ultimately don't get the sacks—which is a real possibility, he's a slippery fish—as long as he knows what's coming every down, he'll eventually falter. That's the plan. Rough 'em up early and often."

•••

Benji Lemmons is going to put real pressure on Markelle Nickey to show he doesn't have any substantial rust to knock off, because he's going to get his. We have one of the best defenses in the country, but even that may not be enough to escape Neyland with a win if Nickey is off his game.

One thing he has to avoid, above all else, is interceptions. Tennessee's offense is too good to hand over extra possessions, period.

Not a bold take, but whoever wins the turnover battle ultimately wins this game.

But if you think I'm picking anything but the boys in crimson and cream, you're crazy.

31 Oklahoma, 24 Tennessee.

it would have taken a generational run by AJ Hatchett to justify sitting our National Champion QB #nocaesar

Early Turnovers Allow Oklahoma To Build Enough Cushion To Fend Off Vols' Furious Rally
Boone Tillman // Sooner BornPublished: November 22nd, 2031

When Benji Lemmons was finding his own teammates, the Tennessee Volunteers looked like an offensive juggernaut capable of winning a National Championship. Thankfully for the two-time defending champion Sooners, he also found plenty of crimson and cream jerseys during his electric outing. In fact, the Volunteers committed five total turnovers—three interceptions and two fumbles—leading to 35 points for the Oklahoma Sooners, who would need every bit of them in the narrow 52-48 victory.

An early fumble by the Volunteers allowed the Sooners to take an early 17-3 lead, but Benji Lemmons struck right back with a 67-yard strike to Duange Ogden—who was one of three Volunteer receivers with 100+ receiving yards and at least two touchdowns in the contest—to bring the Volunteers right back in it. From there, the Sooners scored 21 straight points, aided by two Lemmons interceptions, before the quarterbacks traded interceptions in the middle of the frame. Lemmons was able to rally past the interceptions, throwing two more touchdown passes to make it 38-24 with just 25 seconds remaining in the first half.

Determined to atone for the last interception that turned into a Tennessee touchdown, Nickey could be seen pleading his case with offensive coordinator Garrett Riley on the sideline before the Sooners took the field with under 30 seconds remaining. Whatever appeal he made, Nickey backed it up with two quick completions before finding Isaac Adcock on a wheel route for a 55-yard touchdown as the clock struck zero.

Lemmons' third interception came to start the third quarter and quickly turned into another Isaac Adcock touchdown and a seemingly insurmountable 52-24 lead for the Sooners.

Then Lemmons went to work. With the Sooners trying to kill clock every possession rather than run up the score, Tennessee continued to push the tempo. The Volunteers would finish the game with 24 straight points, bringing themselves within four points of overtaking the lead and mounting one of the largest comebacks in school history.

Instead, after Lemmons found Craig Barnes for the touchdown with 7:14 remaining in the fourth quarter, the Volunteers never saw the ball again. Markelle Nickey orchestrated a brilliant drive that ended with three consecutive kneel-downs on the Volunteers' two yard line, with the Sooners notably refusing to go for a final touchdown.

Question One - James McDavid (OU Daily): "Coach, last time the Sooners and Volunteers faced off, there was a bit of a flare-up between yourself and former Sooner player/coach, now Tennessee head coach, Josh Heupel. It looked like your team took their foot off the pedal after getting the big lead to start the second half. Was the controversy from two years ago with Heupel a factor in that, or was it simply a strategy to reduce the amount of time Tennessee had to claw their way back?"

Armando Leon: "Listen, whatever happened two years ago is buried and over with. We simply wanted to take the air out of the ball to limit the possession they had. They still have a potent offense, turnovers or not, and you saw that throughout the game. I swear, they've got an entire track team at wide receiver, chasing those guys around was quite frankly gassing my boys. So we tried to give them more rest and reduce the amount of time they'd be on the field getting stretched thin. When we needed to execute a long drive, we took care of it to put the game away. That was the plan."

Question Two - Butch Chevalair (The Daily Becon): "Coach, Benji Lemmons is in the Heisman race and delivered a Heisman-like performance, despite the loss. How difficult is he to gameplan against and what was working so well in the first half to get the early interceptions that were ultimately the difference?"

Armando Leon: "As I said before, my guys were gassed. No-huddle offense and they were chasing around track stars all day? The difference is once the secondary slowed down a step, they weren't in the right position. They were late on coverage, rotating over, and reacting to the ball. That's why we saw so many big plays after the break, we weren't tackling sound and allowing them to churn out extra yardage. First half, we were reading the ball and reacting, beating them to the spot. Once we lost our energy, they feasted. Thankfully we were able to build a big enough cushion before the fatigue set in."

Question Three - Meg Semental (SEC Network): "On that final game-clinching drive, Markelle Nickey converted three straight third-down conversions with timely passes. What does having him back in the lineup do for this offense?"

Armando Leon: "This isn't a slight against AJ, but Nick just operates differently back there. He's never rushed, never off-balance, just ready to keep firing away. He knew how badly we needed that drive to be the last one. The team was gassed, so he made sure the defense didn't see the field again. That's why he's a National Champion and a captain of this football team."

Listen, folks, I know firsthand that Leon got reprimanded severely for his comments about Heupel a few years ago and for running up the score on him. Leon may not admit it, but I guarantee that was in the back of his mind going into this game. Thankfully, we clamped down when the chips were on the table, but that deceleration after taking a big lead nearly cost us the game.

I sincerely hope that Leon is right and the absolutely disgusting defensive performance we put on film today is an outlier, brought on by the Volunteers' blistering speed, than a unit that's starting to crack at the seams. We may be firmly entrenched in the SEC Championship Game now, but the work is far from over.

2031 #2 Oklahoma (10-1) @ LSU (6-5)
Boone Tillman // Sooner BornPublished: November 28th, 2031

The Oklahoma Sooners are playing for nothing but pride this week in Baton Rouge, having already clinched a spot in the SEC CCG with their win over Tennessee last weekend. But if I know anything about head coach Armando Leon, he isn't going to want to back his way into the SEC Championship Game.

We'll talk about how long his starters intend to play, if the Sooners will be scoreboard watching, and a last-minute injury in the final regular season edition of the "Schooner Scoop."

Schooner Scoop

BT: "Last game of the season with nothing but pride on the line. I'm not even going to dishonor you by asking if the starters are going to sit, I know that answer, but how long do you intend to leave them in the game?"

AL: "Obviously, we're going to play our starters. We've got a few guys who are more banged up than others who will probably get some early rest, but so long as the game is still undecided, we're going to be playing to win, period. You don't prepare to make a historic run at winning a third-straight National Championship by mailing in the final game of the season."

BT: "The Florida Gators finished conference play at 7-1, with their only loss to Auburn who still has the Iron Bowl to finish off their conference slate. Any chance the Sooners are going to be scoreboard watching to see who they'll be preparing for in the SEC Championship Game?"

AL: "Not if I can help it. That's along the same lines as looking ahead, and we don't do that in Norman."

BT: "LSU senior QB Grant Yates is playing his final game at Tiger Stadium and is widely projected to be the #1 overall pick in next year's draft. He's already said he wants to put on a show for the fans who have cheered him on this season. Are you expecting another offensive onslaught similar to what you faced against Benji Lemmons last week?"

AL: "You have to plan for that. Tiger Stadium is going to be rocking for senior night and you know a player of Yates caliber wants to prove something not only to himself, but to the guys watching in NFL offices around the country. Grant is a good kid, but I'm going to feel bad if the hurting we put on him tomorrow night ends up tanking his draft stock."

BT: "Bonus question. Tyler Ryder left practice on Thursday banged up. What's his status for the season finale?"

AL: "Unfortunately, Ty dislocated his shoulder in practice. He's definitely out for the LSU game and more than likely, won't be back before the playoffs. It's an unfortunate blow for Ty, but we know he'll be back better than ever once the playoffs get underway."

Losing Ty hurts, because as great as Adcock and Slye are in space, they can't run worth a lick between the tackles. Adcock has his moments, but if push comes to shove and we need to grind some clock, with the defense knowing the run is coming—that's when Ty shines.

With how talented of a quarterback Grant Yates is, I fully expect the Sooners to try and keep from getting bombed worse than France in World War II for a second time by taking the air out of the ball and controlling the clock.

With an SEC Championship Game clinched and Yates looking to make one final statement to the NFL GMs around the country, I'm not going to lie, this game worries me.

I'm not going against our boys, but if we lose a close game, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised.
