Dallas, TX. - Throughout a high-scoring first quarter, the Utah Jazz and Dallas Mavericks exchanged exhilarating highlights and knockdown shooting. Zach LaVine led the charge with 12 first-quarter points, while Cam Thomas and Ace Bailey each added 10 of their own.

Then the second quarter arrived, and the competitive balance evaporated.

The Jazz kept firing away at an elite clip while the Mavericks' offensive rhythm completely disappeared. LaVine and Kyrie Irving combined for just 5 points on 2-for-15 shooting in the pivotal second quarter. Cooper Flagg managed 10 of Dallas's meager 14 second-quarter points, but it proved insufficient as Utah continued its offensive onslaught.

By halftime, the Jazz had built a commanding 21-point lead that the Mavericks never seriously threatened. Whenever Dallas mounted a mini-run—trimming the deficit to 12—the Jazz had an answer. Bailey would knock down a dagger three. Anthony Black would take Irving into the paint for an easy bucket. Bam Adebayo would finish an and-one in the paint. Each time, Utah's lead stabilized and Dallas's momentum evaporated.

Jason Kidd acknowledged the fundamental problem facing his Mavericks.

"We have to be better across all four quarters," Kidd said matter-of-factly. "Right now, we're letting them dictate the pace and rhythm. If we can't adjust, this series is over."

When asked about Bailey's continued scorching performance, Joe Mazzulla deflected the individual praise in favor of systems explanation.

"Everyone's talking about "Cheese Bailey" on social media, but look at what's actually happening out there," Mazzulla said. "He's within the offense, taking quality shots, moving the ball. You don't shoot 10 for 14 from three by playing hero ball. That's execution and spacing. That's our system working the way it's supposed to."

Game 6 is scheduled for the Delta Center in two days.

If the Dallas Mavericks can't find a way to slow down Bailey and the Jazz's offensive efficiency, Kidd's prediction will come true: There won't be a Game 7.

Salt Lake City, UT. - For the first time in over two decades, the Utah Jazz are advancing to the Western Conference Finals.

The Jazz dismantled the Dallas Mavericks 132-111 on Thursday night behind an explosive shooting performance from Cam Thomas and steady contributions from Ace Bailey. For Dallas, the loss marks a disappointing second consecutive season failing to return to the conference finals after winning the 2025 NBA Championship.

For Utah, the victory represents the culmination of years of strategic planning, intentional roster construction, and decisive front-office moves.

"This wasn't easy, and it didn't happen overnight," said Austin Ainge after the game. "We drafted well, built the roster with purpose, and found a coach who believed in the vision. That's how you get here."

The Mavericks came out swinging, exploding for 43 points in the first quarter and building an 11-point lead before the quarter break. Daniel Gafford was particularly dominant on the pick-and-roll, collecting all 12 of his points on nearly perfect shooting.

Then disaster struck. On a rebound attempt, Gafford collapsed to the floor and lay writhing in pain, clutching his side. The diagnosis came at halftime: collapsed lungs.

The injury knocked the fight out of Dallas. The Mavericks never recovered.

Without Gafford's rim-running threat, the Mavericks' offense became predictable and stagnant. Anthony Davis attempted to fill the scoring void but went 0-for-8 from three-point range—more detrimental than helpful. Zach LaVine, moved to the bench in favor of Brandin Podziemski, struggled to find rhythm as a reserve. Kyrie Irving faced suffocating defense from Anthony Black and couldn't generate consistent offense.

Cooper Flagg came to play with 26 points on efficient shooting, but it wasn't enough.

The Jazz's three-headed monster—Bailey (38 points), Thomas (32 points), and Black (24 points)—proved insurmountable.

Joe Mazzulla emphasized the disciplined approach that closed out the series.

"We won the last three games playing team basketball with discipline," Mazzulla said. "Good shot selection, making shots, and staying locked in mentally. That's the standard we need to carry into the next round."

The Jazz will face the New Orleans Pelicans in the Western Conference Finals—the Pelicans' deepest postseason run in franchise history.

For Utah, the road to the NBA Finals is finally within reach.

Cameron Boozer Cleared For Western Conference Finals

Image

Salt Lake City, UT. - The Utah Jazz received a significant boost Wednesday when Cameron Boozer was officially cleared to return for the Western Conference Finals against the New Orleans Pelicans.

Boozer, the Jazz's promising second-year forward, has been sidelined since early December after suffering a broken leg. He missed the remainder of the regular season and the entire playoff run—a timeline that had many questioning whether he'd be available for these Conference Finals at all.

But after six months of rehabilitation under the watchful eye of Jazz medical staff and orthopedic specialists, Boozer has been given the green light to compete.

"Cameron's worked incredibly hard in his recovery," team physician Dr. Michael Chinn said in a statement. "He's passed all medical clearances and is physically ready to contribute."

Before the injury, Boozer was playing at an elevated level compared to his rookie campaign. In 24 games, he averaged 15.4 points and 7.0 rebounds while shooting an impressive 49/34/81 from the field, three-point line, and free-throw line—a significant improvement from his rookie season where he struggled with efficiency.

His addition to the Jazz's frontcourt alongside Bam Adebayo and Robert Williams III gives Utah additional depth and scoring punch heading into the Conference Finals. More importantly, it provides insurance against foul trouble or injury to Adebayo—the team's defensive anchor and rim protector.

"Having Cam back is huge," said head coach Joe Mazzulla. "He's another ball-handler in the frontcourt, he can space the floor, and he's shown he can defend multiple positions. The more weapons we have, the better we can execute our system."

Whether Boozer can immediately impact Conference Finals-level basketball after six months away is the central question facing the Jazz.

Playoff basketball is the most physically and mentally demanding basketball on the planet. Boozer hasn't played since December and has missed every playoff game—including Utah's first-round series against San Antonio and their second-round battle with Dallas.

"It's one thing to be medically cleared, it's another thing to be playoff-ready," noted ESPN analyst Jalen Rose. "Boozer has the talent and the work ethic, but there's a rhythm and intensity to playoff basketball that you can't replicate in practice. The Jazz will have to carefully manage his minutes early on."

Mazzulla indicated the team will take a measured approach with Boozer, easing him into the Finals rather than expecting immediate major contributions.

"Cam won't be on a minutes restriction, but we'll be smart about his workload," Mazzulla said. "He's been training all this time, so he's in shape. But there's a difference between training shape and game shape. We'll let the game dictate his minutes."

Utah's coaching staff plans to use Boozer situationally in the early games, particularly in matchups where the Jazz need additional frontcourt spacing or when Adebayo is in foul trouble.

The Pelicans, who are enjoying their deepest postseason run in franchise history, are well aware of Boozer's addition to Utah's arsenal.

"It changes some things for them offensively," Pelicans head coach Willie Green said when asked about Boozer's clearance. "He's another guy who can put the ball on the floor, another shooter. We'll have to adjust our coverage accordingly. But we're not intimidated. We earned our way here."

"This is what we built for," said Jazz CEO Danny Ainge. "We constructed a roster with depth, with multiple scoring options, with guys who can fill different roles. Having Cameron back just adds another dimension to what we're trying to accomplish."

Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals is scheduled for Sunday night in New Orleans. It remains unclear whether Boozer will be in the starting lineup or available off the bench, but his mere availability changes Utah's strategic options heading into the series.

The Jazz, after a grueling run through the Western Conference, now have the luxury of depth—something that will prove crucial in a Finals series against a Pelicans team hungry to prove they belong on basketball's biggest stage.

"We're ready for this," Mazzulla said. "With our full roster available, we believe we have what it takes to get past New Orleans and advance to the NBA Finals."

For Boozer, after months of rehabilitation and rehabilitation, the question is no longer whether he'll play—it's how much impact he can have when he does.
