MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — New West Virginia head football coach Randy Moss has made the first major additions to his coaching staff, hiring Bobby Petrino as offensive coordinator and Charlie Strong as defensive coordinator, the university announced Thursday.

The appointments surround Moss, a first-time college coach, with two of the most experienced assistants in the country. Petrino and Strong have each served as a Power Four head coach and previously led Louisville’s football program.

“When I accepted this job, I said I wanted experienced coaches who could develop players and help us compete immediately,” Moss said. “Bobby Petrino is one of the best offensive minds in football, and Charlie Strong has built elite defenses everywhere he has been. These are two coaches who know what winning football looks like.”

Petrino will assume complete control of West Virginia’s offense and serve as its primary play caller. Known for aggressive passing attacks and quarterback development, he is expected to construct an offense designed around Moss’ vision of speed, spacing and explosive plays.

The combination immediately becomes one of the most intriguing offensive partnerships in college football. Moss brings the perspective of one of the greatest receivers in NFL history, while Petrino provides decades of experience designing and calling offenses at the college and professional levels.

“This offense is going to attack,” Petrino said. “Coach Moss has a clear vision for what he wants West Virginia football to become. We want to play fast, stretch the entire field and put our players in positions to make explosive plays.”

Petrino’s decision is particularly significant following widespread speculation that he could join Bill Belichick’s staff at North Carolina. The veteran offensive coach had reportedly emerged as a potential candidate to work alongside Belichick in Chapel Hill, creating the possibility of pairing one of college football’s most accomplished offensive minds with the eight-time Super Bowl champion.

Instead, Petrino ultimately chose Moss and the opportunity to take full control of West Virginia’s offense.

Strong will oversee the Mountaineers’ defense and is expected to emphasize physicality, speed and aggressive pressure. A former head coach at Louisville, Texas and South Florida, Strong built his reputation as a defensive strategist and recruiter with deep connections throughout Florida and the Southeast.

“Our defense will be disciplined, physical and relentless,” Strong said. “West Virginia has always taken pride in toughness. We’re going to build a unit that reflects that identity every time it takes the field.”

The hirings address the largest concern surrounding WVU’s decision to appoint Moss: his lack of previous coaching experience. Petrino and Strong have coached hundreds of college games and managed major programs, giving Moss two veteran advisers capable of helping him navigate recruiting, roster management and game-day preparation.

Their recruiting connections could also expand West Virginia’s reach. Petrino has extensive ties throughout the South, while Strong has spent decades recruiting Florida—an area expected to become central to Moss’ strategy for rebuilding the Mountaineers’ roster.

“Randy doesn’t have to pretend he knows everything on Day 1,” Vice President and Director of Athletics Wren Baker said. “What impressed us was his willingness to hire accomplished people, give them genuine responsibility and build a staff whose strengths complement his own.”

Moss is expected to remain closely involved with the receivers and the overall construction of the offense, but Petrino will call plays. Strong will have similar autonomy over the defense.

West Virginia is still working to complete the remainder of its staff as it navigates the transfer portal and prepares for the early signing period. Additional assistant-coaching announcements are expected in the coming days.

Only a few days after making one of the boldest head-coaching hires in college football history, the Mountaineers have doubled down by assembling a leadership group filled with recognizable names.

Moss may be learning how to become a college head coach—but with Petrino running his offense and Strong commanding his defense, he will be under great tutelage.
