Scandinavian Superligaen Officially Launched to Unite Nordic Football


Scandinavian nations Norway, Sweden and Denmark have joined forces to form a new league with their top 4 teams.

In one of the most ambitious projects in European football history, the football associations of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden have announced the creation of the Scandinavian Superligaen, a new 12-club competition designed to elevate Nordic football onto the continent's biggest stage.

Beginning this season, the league will replace the traditional domestic top flights of the three nations, bringing together four of the strongest clubs from each country:

Norway: Bodø/Glimt, Molde, Rosenborg, Viking
Sweden: Malmö FF, IFK Göteborg, AIK, Djurgården
Denmark: FC Copenhagen, Brøndby, FC Midtjylland, AGF

To preserve a familiar competitive structure while maximizing high-profile fixtures, the Superligaen will adopt the successful Danish league format. Clubs will play a 22-match regular season before splitting into Championship and Relegation groups, ensuring a 32-match campaign filled with meaningful competition from start to finish.

The league is backed by an unprecedented Nordic investment partnership. Financing comes through a joint venture between Denmark's EIFO (Export and Investment Fund of Denmark), Norway's Government Pension Fund Global—the world's largest sovereign wealth fund—and Sweden's First, Second, Third, Fourth, and Seventh AP Funds. Together, the consortium has committed billions toward stadium development, youth academies, sports science, digital infrastructure, and attracting world-class talent to Scandinavia.

League officials believe the unified competition will dramatically increase television revenues, sponsorship opportunities, and UEFA competitiveness, allowing Nordic clubs to retain their best players while attracting elite talent from around the world. The long-term objective is clear: establish the Scandinavian Superligaen as one of Europe's premier football competitions and regularly challenge the continent's traditional "Big Five" leagues.

Adding further excitement to the inaugural season is the return of Ole Gunnar Solskjær to Molde FK. Molde Announce Squad for Inaugural Superligaen Season

The return of Ole Gunnar Solskjær marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Molde FK as the club prepares for the inaugural Scandinavian Superligaen. Tasked with competing against the biggest clubs from Norway, Sweden, and Denmark, Solskjær inherits an experienced squad led by captain Magnus Wolff Eikrem, with Mats Møller Dæhli providing composure in midfield and Martin Linnes bringing valuable leadership in defense. Up front, Fredrik Gulbrandsen and Veton Berisha offer proven attacking options, while younger talents such as Valdemar Lund, Emil Brevik, Frederik Ihler, and Mads Enggård will be expected to play increasingly important roles.

This is a very interesting idea. Centuries ago the three countries were actually joined in one kingdom, the Kalmar Union, which existed from 1397 to 1523.

In more recent (football related) history the three nations did have an annual cup tournament involving the four best clubs from each nation, named the Royal League.
It only lasted for three seasons though (2004 to 2007), all of them with a Danish winner in the final.
I'm looking forward to this. Good start with a home win vs Rosenborg.

Yeah I think the Danish league aligns better with the timing and I like the fact that it's a small league. The format is cool. 22 games in a double round robin, then split into two groups of 6. Play one more against each to determine the champ, european qualifiers and relegation (which won't be in game).

You're updated I see. However, it's not 100% correct. There'll be two matches against the other five in the end group, home and away. So a total of 32 league matches over the season. 22+10.

And then there's the twist. The winner of the "relegation round" gets a playoff match to qualify for the Conference League.
Sometimes it's against number 3 in the "championship round", sometimes against number 4. I suppose it depends on who the cup winner is.

The argument for this is that the teams in the bottom six should still have something to play for other than avoiding relegation.
But it has ultimately created a scenario, where a 7th place (best of the bottom six) is preferable to finishing 5th or 6th (bottom of the top six).

In the 25/26 season, FC København finished 7th and beat 4th place Brøndby IF in this playoff for Europe.
