With Lincoln Riley's seat sweltering, all indications are they will at least try

Before the death threats roll in, I am NOT doom posting assuming that Kenny Dillingham is going to jump at the next coaching opportunity. For all intents and purposes, he loves being in Tempe.
Kenny Dillingham wrote:“I was never leaving, I never said I was leaving — this is home,” Dillingham said. “You have to continue to push and my job running the program is to push and push and push until you can’t push anymore. And if I didn’t do that, I’d be cheating my players. I’d be cheating my staff. I’d be cheating the fan base. I’d be cheating everybody in the city. I’d be cheating the local businesses that feed off of us winning, and then they sell more beer. I’d be cheating everybody.”
That's what Dillingham said after his shiny new five-year extension that cut the Michigan rumors down where they stood. That doesn't mean teams aren't going to continue to pry one of the best offensive minds in the game away from his home, in search of prestige and fame.

Lane Kiffin said that. So did Jimbo Fisher. And Lincoln Riley. Brian Kelly, too.

Dillingham can say no until he is blue in the face, it won't stop the elite teams in college football from thinking they have the perfect pitch to pull the hometown hero away. Michigan was the first.

The next on the list is likely to be the USC Trojans.

And I hate to admit it, but they look at helluva lot more tempting for Dilly than Michigan did.

Same conference, sure. But USC is closer to home and has shown a willingness to stick by their guy as they build a scheme. Riley's been there almost five years chipping away at it. Jim Harbaugh won a championship and couldn't get out the door fast enough at Michigan.

USC fell to 5-4 on the season after the Ohio State Buckeyes went into LA Memorial Stadium and put their muddy boots on the couch. The USC Trojans leadership isn't going to stand for that kind of showing, in their own house no less, for much longer.

Dillingham has proved that he can win without the resources that a blue blood program could offer. He took a terrible Arizona State team and led them to the College Football Playoff two years ago. 8-5 last season felt like a step-back by expectations, but it is still one of the better seasons in recent memory for the Sun Devils.

ASU may be 5-3 this season, but the offense is still putting up points despite a shaky QB situation.

It wouldn't take the Trojans leadership long to talk themselves into Dillingham as the logical replacement for Lincoln Riley.

The bigger question is: is Dillingham going to listen?

Two weeks ago the Arizona State Sun Devils were 3-3 and the idea of them potentially making the Big XII conference championship game seemed like a pipe dream. Then, ASU knocked off previously undefeated K-State, then held on for dear life in a win over one-time Big XII favorite BYU.

They still have some work to do, but suddenly there is a realistic path to a potential conference championship. It will require Arizona State to take care of business in their remaining conference games, which includes this week's home game against Colorado and a home tilt against OK State later in the season, then hope for a little luck. Of the four teams ahead of them in the conference standings, Utah is the only one without Texas Tech on their remaining schedule. It's still early and a lot of moving pieces need to come together, but most importantly: Arizona State needs to win. And that quest starts with this weekend's contest at Mountain America Stadium against the Colorado Buffaloes.


Pitchfork Points

Image The defense finally snagged some interceptions. Can they keep the momentum going?
When the ASU secondary finally popped their interception cherry in 2026, it felt like a monkey off the team's back. As the streak mounted, we saw several players drop wide open interceptions, the pressure seemingly bearing down on them. Once Lyrick Rawls strutted into the end zone, that monkey was gone. Two more interceptions followed and instantly buoyed the unit's confidence. Now, they have to keep it going against Julian Lewis.

Image Can Fette stay consistent?
Jake Fette is currently exhibiting early Cutter Boley-ism. Boley was notoriously hot and cold over the first six weeks of the season. Fette was supposed to be a stabilizer, as much as a true freshman can be, but the struggle was real in Provo last week. He's a freshman facing his first true road game, so we'll give him a pass. But he has to at least challenge the Buffs defense to keep the run game churning.

Image From dynamic, to predictable? What happened to the rushing attack?
Speaking of the running game; what happened? A unit that was one of the most explosive in football with four different players capable of clawing their way through a defense, suddenly looks pedestrian. Kyson Brown struggled to reach the second level, Demarcius Robinson struggled to hit the hole consistently, Jason Brown Jr and Cardae Mack contribute when called upon, but it's not enough to keep the defense from keying on the deep ball. When the running game is rolling, everything flows better. Hopefully, Dilly finds the right formula this week.

ASU Flips the Switch With Second Half Blowout

It was a tale of two halves for the Sun Devils in Tempe on Saturday, but thankfully for the home team, they owned the second half. At one point, Jake Fette was 10/23 with 92 yards and two interceptions after his late second-half pick turned into a Colorado field goal and a 17-3 lead.

Colorado was on the verge of taking that commanding lead to the locker room, then boneheadedly threw it all away. Content to just run out the clock, Dillingham called a run play. It gained 12 yards. He called another, gained 16 yards. Sitting at the 43-yard line, Dilly figured what's the worst that could happen and called the HB Screen.

Kyson Brown takes the pass and rumbles 15 more yards downfield, but with zeros on the clock. This is where it gets crazy. Colorado was called for a face mask on the tackle, giving ASU a free play. The ensuing 43-yard field goal sailed right, no harm, no foul, right?

Wrong. Baker Tucker was bowled over on the attempt, prompting another flag and yet another free play. ASU was suddenly 13 yards from the end zone. Dillingham took it as a sign.

"When things work out like that, you just got to accept it," laughed the head coach. Fette found Raiden Vines-Bright for the 13-yard touchdown, and suddenly ASU had momentum going into the half down only 17-10.

First play of the second half? Interception. Omarion Miller and Raiden Vines-Bright got their signals crossed, literally, on the play and picked themselves, leaving no one where the ball was thrown with anticipation and ending in an easy interception.

ASU's defense stood tall however, forcing the field goal. It would be the final points Colorado would score. Despite the 13/28 start with one touchdown and three interceptions, Fette finally found his groove.

Fette would go a dazzling 9/9 for 174 yards and four touchdowns as the Sun Devils rained Hellfire on the helpless Buffaloes.

"It was like a switch flipped," acknowledged Kenny Dillingham on the sudden surge of offense that followed the third interception early in the second half, "I wish we could just flip a switch every week."

Arizona would score 42 consecutive points to bury the Buffaloes and move themselves to 6-3. Up next the Sun Devils travel to the sunshine state to face the 6-3 UCF Knights.
