interesting choice :iranmaybe:
lil inside baseball.

Schumann in real life has had the same concerns I highlighted in the article. No experience outside Georgia and isn't a strong motivator. I mean, he even looks dry lmao

I liked Danielson. But then I asked myself. Why would Danielson leave Boise State? ASU wouldn't give him a significant raise from Boise. Sure, ASU is in a P4 conference, which Boise sought to join before ending up in essentially the upper tier of the MWC with the new look Pac-12, but ASU would just be another stepping stone job if he was that ambitious. Why would't he wait for someone like Oregon, or Washington, or Texas A&M if he wanted to leave. Not go to another stepping stone - which Dillingham just proved we were - but find a solid place.

If Samples was in the game, he may have been my pick. But unfortunately, neither him or Banks is, because those were the first two guys I highlighted as someone I think ASU would look at.

Then, finally Weis Jr. fits the bill. The Sun Devils already did this same thing with Dillingham himself. Young coordinator with offensive success, goes from a two different high end P4 schools as OC, to ASU to figure it out.

The biggest question is, are we going to be able to get good enough in the next three years (my house rule) to be high enough prestige to avoid doing this whole song and dance again? :kghah:

2026 Liberty Bowl Preview
Arizona State (7-5) vs Texas A&M (7-5)
The Devil's Due Mailbag — Liberty Bowl Preview Image By: Emilio Suarez
Published: December 24th, 2026
It felt like a century ago that the Arizona State Sun Devils had a clear path to the Big XII Championship Game, before they fell flat on their faces with back-to-back losses to end the season with a 7-5 record.

Since then, Kenny Dillingham left for USC and Charlie Weis Jr. was hired as his replacement. But with Weis Jr. in the midst of guiding the LSU Tigers offense and Heisman winner Sam Leavitt into the College Football Playoff, the Sun Devils turn to Marcus Arroyo to lead them into battle one final time. Arroyo will be leaving the Sun Devils program after the game to join Dillingham in Los Angeles.

Despite all the turmoil internally for the Sun Devils, they aren't getting a break on the field as they prepare for a rematch against the Texas A&M Aggies in the Liberty Bowl, who beat Arizona State 41-35 in Week Two this year.

Pitchfork Points

Image How is the team's mindset?

We're going to get the answer to this question very quickly once the Liberty Bowl kicks off. Are the remaining Sun Devils determined to prove that they are a contender, despite Dillingham's departure? Or are they content to roll over to finish the end of what was a grueling final stretch? Whatever happens will say a lot about the current roster that Charlie Weis Jr. is going to inherit.

Image How will the defense fare without Owen Long?

The junior MLB has opted to sit out the Liberty Bowl as he eyes the transfer portal for his final year of eligibility. Long was instinctive and sound in both the run and passing game and his presence will be sorely missed. All-American second-teamer Martell Hughes is going to slide in from his will linebacker spot to man the middle, but if anything, that creates a two-fold problem for ASU. Hughes was at his best rushing the passer. He has the athletic ability to man the inside, but lacks Long's instinct and experience. If Hughes can't keep the ASU defense coordinated, Marcel Reed may have a field day.

Image Without Rueben Owens II, the Sun Devils have to stop the pass. Can they?
Rueben Owens II is out with a tricep tear suffered midway through the regular season. He exploded for 109 yards and a touchdown in the team's first meeting. His absence could likely turn the Aggies one-dimensional. Usually, that would benefit the defense. But with ASU's suspect passing defense, it may play directly into the Aggies hands. If they want to slow down Reed and Co. they'll have to get after him early and often, force him into mistakes, and avoid the big plays that have plagued them all season.

Sun Devils' Defense Ignites Comeback Effort For Liberty Bowl Victory
34 Arizona State (8-5) vs Texas A&M (7-6) 27 | Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium | Memphis, TN.
By Emilio Suarez Image December 26th, 2027
For the entire first half of Arizona State's Liberty Bowl clash against the Texas A&M Aggies, the Sun Devils looked like a team ready for the season to be over. Outside of an electric 75-yard run by Cardae Mack, the Sun Devils offense was stagnant and at times, downright ugly.

Jake Fette only completed five of his 19 first half passes, tossing back-to-back interceptions that led to both of the Aggies second-quarter touchdowns as Texas A&M took a commanding 27-10 lead into the break.

ASU had possession to open the second half and when a quick three-and-out followed, even the local broadcast team started preparing for the inevitable finish.

Martell Hughes was having none of that. Midway through the third quarter the second team All-American jumped a hitch route intended for Bethel-Roman and sprinted 66 yards to paydirt. The pick-six sapped the momentum from the Aggies and placed it firmly in the hands of the Sun Devils.

The Aggies offense wouldn't cross midfield for the remainder of the contest. Jake Fette found his groove, hitting Raiden Vines-Bright on the next ASU possession for a 57-yard post route, pulling the Sun Devils within three.

Reed was strip-sacked by the veteran CJ Fite on the next Aggies possession and Fette wasted no time capitalizing on the opportunity. On the first play after the turnover, interim head coach Marcus Arroyo called for a shot play and Omarion Miller climbed the ladder to haul in the go-ahead 36-yard touchdown.

Leading by four with just over five minutes remaining, Fette led one final drive that chewed up nearly three minutes of clock, and most importantly, ended with a 37-yard field goal to ensure that even a touchdown couldn't win the game for the Aggies.

It wouldn't matter. On the second play of the final drive of the 2026 season for A&M, Reed dropped back to pass. He intended to hit Bethel-Roman in stride. Instead, he found Lyrick Rawls.

Fittingly the senior safety, who led the nation in tackles, corralled the game-winning interception to finish 2026 on a bright note for the Sun Devils.

LB Martell Hughes
10 Tkl, 3 TFL, Sack, INT, TD
