Bulldogs hit the grass for first day of spring practice
MSU begins 5-week session of spring workouts at Leo Seal Complex

STARKVILLE — A cold front rolled through the Golden Triangle overnight, and the sunshine that greeted Mississippi State's 2027 football team Tuesday morning didn't do much to cut through it. Players and coaches made their way out to the Leo Seal Complex at around 9 a.m. with temperatures still hovering in the upper 30s, but nobody seemed to mind much. It was the first day back on the grass, and there was plenty to get to.

Carlisle back at quarterback

The most notable sight of the morning was Austin Carlisle taking first-team reps at quarterback for the first time since arriving in Starkville. The transfer, who broke UL Monroe's single-season passing records two seasons ago before spending last year as a do-everything weapon at Texas State, is making the full-time move back behind center.

That shift pushes Brodie McWhorter, last year's starter, into a backup role heading into his sophomore season. McWhorter threw for 3,104 yards with 16 touchdowns and 11 interceptions on 53% completion a season ago.

McWhorter said the coaching staff was upfront with him about the plan before Carlisle ever arrived on campus.

"They didn't hide anything from me," McWhorter said. "I knew what the plan was going into this. I think sitting behind a guy like that for a year, learning from him, that's only going to help me in the long run. I've got a lot of football left to play."

New faces up front

The offensive line is in the middle of a significant overhaul, with the Bulldogs having to replace four of the five starters from last season.

Tyler Miller, a fourth-year junior, is stepping into the starting left tackle spot. The former LSU lineman is a big-bodied, physical presence at 6-foot-5, with rare length for the position and a barrel-chested frame that's made him a load to move off the ball since his high school days in Laurel.

TJ Lockhart, a redshirt senior, is currently working as the presumed starter at left guard, while Mario Nash, a redshirt junior, returns as the starter at center after arriving from Florida State. Nash, a former four-star prospect, is a high-football-IQ lineman with the kind of interior versatility that made him a coveted name in the portal a season ago.

There's real competition behind Nash as well, with redshirt sophomore Kalvin Upshaw and Tony Polumbus both pushing for reps at center and along the interior.

At guard, redshirt junior LJ Prudhomme and redshirt sophomore Leon Noil Jr. are both drawing early attention. Prudhomme, a strong, thick-trunked lineman out of Shreveport, Louisiana, plays with an edge and has shown the ability to overwhelm defenders at the point of attack even when his technique isn't perfect. Both he and Noil remain relatively inexperienced, but neither lacks for physical tools.

Right tackle is an open competition between redshirt sophomore Dalton Toothman and redshirt senior Colin Alexander.

Receiver room taking shape

At receiver, the Bulldogs return a proven starter in Marshaun Evans, who caught 46 passes for 787 yards and three touchdowns a season ago, and add two transfers who look like natural fits alongside him.

At 6-foot-6, Evans profiles as the X receiver in this offense, with newcomer Traylon Ray sliding in at Z and Jamaal Jordan working in the slot. Jordan arrives with a built-in advantage, he played in this same offensive system a season ago at Texas State, giving him a head start most transfers don't have.

Head coach GJ Kinne said the group's early chemistry has been noticeable.

"Those three complement each other really well," Kinne said. "Marshaun's a big, physical target on the outside, Traylon's got some juice to him, and Jamaal already knows the offense inside and out. That's not something you get very often with a new group this early in the spring."

Spring practice continues over the next five weeks as the Bulldogs build toward their season opener.

Mississippi State closed out its spring session with the annual spring game at Davis Wade Stadium on Saturday, and while the results won't be etched anywhere permanent, they gave the coaching staff plenty to chew on heading into the summer.

The headline storyline all spring was Austin Carlisle's move back to quarterback, and Saturday's showcase didn't do much to settle any nerves. Carlisle struggled to find a rhythm in the live setting, appearing indecisive at times and lacking the same zip on the ball that the other three quarterbacks in the room, Brodie McWhorter, Jelanie Strange and even true freshman David Ficken, all showed with more consistency.

It's worth noting the setting worked against him in some ways. Carlisle's game has always translated best in structured situations where his legs are part of the equation, and a spring game built around a straightforward drop-back passing script didn't give him much room to operate the way he did at his previous stop. Whether that's a real concern or just a product of a limited script remains to be seen once fall camp opens things back up.

One of the more interesting developments of the spring came at running back, where redshirt freshman George Wick, a receiver a season ago before making the position switch at the start of spring practice, broke off a touchdown that bore a striking resemblance to plays Texas State ran a season ago with Carlisle in the backfield: motion out of the backfield, a quick catch, then a burst upfield.

Cooper Crosby has been the clear bellcow throughout the spring and remains the presumptive starter, but Wick's flash suggests the staff may have found a real complementary piece out of the position change.

Receiver Jamison Hamm saw considerably more time with the first-team offense than most expected entering the spring. At 6-foot-5 with legitimate top-end speed, Hamm hauled in a deep shot from McWhorter on Saturday and rotated between both the first and second units throughout the spring session.

The tight end room also drew praise, with Zayion Cotton and Kyle Rushing both standing out as legitimate weapons in that spot.

Up front, Colin Alexander has moved to center, splitting reps there with Mario Nash whenever Carlisle was under center. At guard, Leon Noil Jr. and LJ Prudhomme appear to have emerged as the top options, giving the staff at least a partial answer at a group that lost four of its five starters from last season's four-win squad.
