Austin Carlisle Welcoming High Expectations

STARKVILLE – Did you catch the number floating around this offseason? If you follow Mississippi State recruiting or college football in general, you couldn't miss it.

Carlisle doesn't shy away from any of it.

"I signed up for this," Carlisle said. "I think when it comes to NIL, you have to be prepared for the expectations that come with it. People expect things from you. I mean, some of the numbers out there are ridiculous but that's part of it. You have to take the good with the bad and a lot of what comes with it is more pressure. I don't run from that. I want that pressure."

Carlisle arrives in Starkville after a career that's already taken him through four different programs and two different positions. He broke UL Monroe's single-season passing records two years ago, then spent last season as a do-everything weapon at Texas State, running back, receiver, whatever offensive coordinator Jaleel Mosley needed him to be, on the way to sweeping four major national awards and finishing as a Heisman finalist.

This year, he's back at quarterback full-time, and back working for Mosley, this time in the SEC and, fittingly, back with the program where his college career actually began.

"It's a little funny how it worked out," Carlisle said. "I still remember coming in against [Mississippi State] as a redshirt freshman and taking that first snap and hearing those cowbells."

That first game came two years ago, when Carlisle, then a true freshman at UL Monroe, was thrust into action after starter Aidan Armenta went down with an injury. Carlisle finished 11-of-13 passing for 121 yards and a touchdown, adding five carries for 29 yards, in a 41-24 loss to the Bulldogs. He started every game the rest of that season.

"I didn't have much time to think out there that day," Carlisle said. "I just went out and played. Looking back now, I had no idea what I was doing."

The transition hasn't been seamless.

Carlisle's game has thrived in structured chaos, quick throws, designed runs, plays built around getting the ball in his hands in space. Asking him to be a full-time, drop-back quarterback again, inside a new install that blends old concepts he already knows from Mosley with brand new wrinkles, was always going to take time.

It showed this spring. Carlisle was the first to admit it.

"I wasn't sharp," Carlisle said. "I knew coming in that going back to full-time quarterback after not really throwing the ball much for an entire year wasn't going to just click overnight. There were reps in the spring game where I didn't trust what I was seeing, and it showed."

What's changed since then, he says, is simple: reps.

"Fall camp's been different," Carlisle said. "I feel like I'm catching my rhythm. The install makes more sense to me now, the parts that are new to me are starting to feel like the parts I already know. I'm not thinking as much out there anymore. I'm just playing."

Carlisle says the standard he's chasing isn't really about the NIL number, or the hype, or even the Heisman buzz that followed him from San Marcos.

"All that stuff is nice, but it's not why I'm doing this," Carlisle said. "I've got people who believed in me before any of this, my family, Coach Mosley, this whole staff that brought me in. I want to go out and prove all of them right. That's what actually matters to me."

Mosley, for his part, has been adamant that the growing pains are part of the process, not a red flag.

Carlisle says he's not worried about how the outside world reads any of it.

"I've been counted out before and I've answered it before," Carlisle said. "I'm not worried about proving doubters wrong. I'm worried about being the best version of myself for this team. Everything else takes care of itself if I do that."

Whether that translates into results remains to be seen. But if there's one thing Carlisle's career has shown so far, it's that betting against him tends not to work out.
