DALLAS, TX • No. 10 Cal and No. 13 SMU spent the second half trading punches, leads and late-game answers. In the end, it was the Golden Bears who survived a wild road test against the Mustangs, winning 40-37 in overtime after a fourth-quarter shootout that saw SMU tie the game with just 27 seconds remaining.

Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele threw four touchdown passes, including the game-winning 19-yard strike to Dajuan McKinley in overtime, but Cal needed much more than its quarterback to escape Dallas.

The Golden Bears' defense forced three SMU turnovers, including two interceptions and a fumble, while Cal committed two turnovers of its own. Those takeaways were timely, giving the Bears opportunities to respond during a second half in which neither team could maintain control for long.

Cal entered halftime ahead 20-14 after a first half that featured two Sagapolutele touchdown passes and a pair of field goals from Towns McGough.

With 2:39 remaining in the third quarter, Sagapolutele found McKinley for a 1-yard touchdown, giving Cal a 26-14 advantage.

With only 27 seconds left in the third quarter, SMU running back Kendrick Raphael broke loose for a 12-yard touchdown run. The extra point cut Cal's lead to 26-21 heading into the fourth quarter.

SMU completed its comeback early in the fourth.

At 7:27, quarterback Kevin Jennings scored on a 3-yard touchdown run, putting the Mustangs in front 27-26 for the first time on the day.

Adam Mohammed and the Cal offense answered, as he powered into the end zone from three yards out. Cal then successfully converted the two-point attempt and reclaimed the lead, 34-27.

The Golden Bears were just minutes away from escaping Dallas with a hard-fought victory, but SMU wasn't done.

The Mustangs drove down the field and with just 27 seconds remaining Raphael scored his second rushing touchdown of the night, this time from two yards out, and tied the game with the successful PAT to send it to overtime.

Cal won the coin toss and elected to play defense first, a decision that would ultimately decide the game. The Golden Bears defense came up with a big stop on 3rd and inches. With a big decision on their hands, SMU decided to stay conservative and take the points. Kicker Nick Reed stepped onto the field and drilled a 32-yard field goal, giving the Mustangs a 37-34 lead.

For the first time all night, Cal was one possession away from elimination.

But Sagapolutele had one more answer.

Facing the pressure of a ranked road game in overtime, he delivered his biggest throw of the night, finding McKinley wide open on a slant for the game winner.

I honestly thought that was going to be our first loss. We couldn't do anything to stop their offense in the second half.
