With its playoff hopes hanging in the balance, Cal delivered two completely different performances Saturday afternoon.

For one half, the Golden Bears looked every bit like a team capable of making a postseason run. They attacked Virginia through the air, controlled the line of scrimmage and built a commanding 24-6 halftime lead on the road against the No. 13 Cavaliers.

Then everything changed.

Virginia stormed back in the second half, completely shutting down the Cal offense and turning what looked like a comfortable Golden Bear victory into a tense finish. But despite being held scoreless over the final 30 minutes, Cal's dominant first half proved to be enough as the Bears escaped Charlottesville with a 24-16 victory.

More importantly, Cal kept its playoff hopes alive.

Quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele came out firing, connecting with running back Adam Mohammed for an 85-yard touchdown just 3:48 into the game. The explosive play immediately put Virginia on its heels and gave the Bears an early 7-0 advantage.

Sagapolutele struck again later in the quarter, finding Mason Mini for a 5-yard touchdown to push the lead to 14.

Virginia finally got on the board with a 33-yard field goal from Will Bettridge, but Cal answered with a 35-yard field goal of their own.

The Cavaliers added another Bettridge field goal late in the half, but Cal responded one more time. With 1:57 remaining before halftime, Sagapolutele found Dorian Thomas for a 2-yard touchdown, sending the Golden Bears into the locker room with a commanding 24-6 lead.

The second half was a completely different football game.

Virginia's defense tightened up, and Cal suddenly couldn't find the same rhythm that had produced 24 points before halftime.

The Cavaliers opened the third quarter with a 2-yard touchdown pass from Eli Holstein to Jacquon Gibson, cutting the deficit to 24-13.

From there, Virginia's defense continued to frustrate Cal. The Bears struggled to sustain drives and Sagapolutele threw two interceptions. Bettridge added a 42-yard field goal with 10:19 remaining in the fourth quarter, making it a one-score game at 24-16.

While trying to chew the clock in enemy territory, Sagapolutele took a sack on a questionable play-action pass call. He would fumble and although his team recovered, it put them out of field goal range and they were forced to punt.

With one last shot to tie the game, Holstein took a shot and it was intercepted by safety Kingston Lopa. The Golden Bears then converted a couple of first downs to seal the dramatic win.
