Predicting the 2029 SEC Football Season: Mississippi State
Preview & Game-By-Game Picks

OXFORD, MS - NOVEMBER 23: Mississippi State quarterback Austin Carlisle (10) celebrates an Egg Bowl Victory against Ole Miss

Number eight in our series of wild blind dart-throwing predictions is our ol' friends down the road in StarkVegas.
Coach: G.J. Kinne (13-12 at Mississippi State, 45-33 overall, 4-5 vs. rivals, 4-1 bowl record, 2-9 vs. top 25)
2028 MSU record: 9–4 (4–4 in SEC)
Looking back: G.J. Kinne was certainly under the hot season after a four-win season in his first year. The Bulldogs went out and got one of the top players in college football in Austin Carlisle via the portal which turned their fortunes, winning nine games last year along with a bowl game. They won the games they were supposed to, won a few they weren't, beat Ole Miss and finished .500 in the SEC for a massive improvement year-over-year.
Key losses: QB Austin Carlisle (draft), WR Traylon Ray (draft), LB Tyler Lockhart (graduation), DT Talan Carter (graduation), DT Dealyn Evans (graduation), WR Mashaun Evans (transfer portal), T Dalton Toothman (transfer portal), CB Kaylib Singleton (transfer portal), CB Terrell Johnson Jr (transfer portal), HB George Wick (transfer portal)
Top returnees: TE Zayion Cotton, OL Tyler Miller, OL Mario Nash, RB Cooper Crosby, S Bralan Womack, WR Jamison Hamm
Top newcomers: WR Carterroius Brown (SMU), HB Sean Cuono (Indiana), OL Kai Pritchard (Memphis), WR Owen Cabell (Vanderbilt), CB Prince Cottonham (Liberty)
Strengths: A strong and experienced secondary along with a proven group at receiver and one of the best tight ends in the SEC.
Weaknesses: Quarterback was a question mark before Brodie McWhorter's departure from the team. An offensive line that has yet to find an identity nor continuity combined with key losses on the other side of the football along the trenches, particularly at defensive tackle where they were deep last season.
Outlook: The offense was electric last season with Carlisle at the helm. With Carlisle gone, it will surely look different as he was the best athlete on the field at all times. The Bulldogs passing game looked explosive in the bowl game without him but it was a bowl game against UTSA. How does it far, week and in and week out, in the SEC with a first-time starter behind a relatively poor offensive line?
Odds
Estimated Wins Total: 5.5
2028 MSU SCHEDULE:
vs. Memphis (5-7, 3-5) - W
vs. Georgia Southern (3-9, 1-7) - W
at #11 TCU (13-1, 9-0) - L
vs. #7 Tennessee (10-3, 5-3) - L
at Florida (4-8, 2-6) - W
vs. UConn (10-3) - W
at #16 Missouri (9-4, 4-4) - W
vs. #6 Georgia (11-3, 6-2) - L
at Arkansas (4-8, 1-7) - W
at #1 Texas A&M (11-3, 7-1) - L
vs. #17 Texas (9-4, 5-3) - L
vs. Ole Miss (8-5, 3-5) - L
Predicted record: 6-6
They take a step back after last season's nine win campaign. The back end of the schedule is brutal, especially after early challenges against TCU and Tennessee which would leave them with two losses before October. There's just not a lot of winnable games in this schedule once you get past Missouri besides the Arkansas game and Ole Miss will be looking to avenge last year's rivalry loss.

What We Learned: Bulldogs turn to game preparation as they wrap up fall camp
Trumaine Lasike -- 247Sports Mississippi State Football Insider
Mississippi State held its final scrimmage of the preseason on Saturday as they get into game-week preparation for their week zero matchup against the Memphis Tigers in six days.
Bulldogs head coach G.J. Kinne told the media on Sunday that what he wished for was for his team to walk out of Davis Wade Stadium healthy. The next goal was to see balanced competition on each side of the football. When the sun started to disappear beyond the horizon of best small town in the south, the Bulldogs had accomplished both.
“There was a ton of back and forth,” Kinne said. “Defensively, we started the scrimmage really, really well and found a way to get a couple of three-and-outs. I liked how the offense was able to bounce back and continue to play. They took what was there and tried to go execute the call.
“That's what I said to the guys right after: great competition and a ton of back and forth. We've got a ton of work to do. No. 1, we're healthy coming off the field, which is huge. No. 2, the energy, physicality and competitiveness were really good.”
Kinne hasn't named a starter, calling it a live battle, but throughout camp, it's been true freshman Brett Mixon that primarily been featured with the rest of the first team offense ever since Brodie McWhorter's sudden departure from the team three weeks ago.
Up next after Mixon has been fellow Texas native Jelanie Strange followed by David Ficken.
“I thought [Mixon] made some really good decisions,” Kinne said. “He took really good care of the football. He's had a really good camp and he's trying to get better every day.”
Another standout has been safety Tony Middleton who had an interception in the scrimmage that was posted on the team's social media page. The transfer from Auburn has emerged as a leader since his arrival in spring, forming quite the partnership with returning senior Bralan Mock.
Middleton has had quite the battle in camp with tight end Zayian Cotton, who is back in his usual No. 4 jersey. Cotton spent some time in the portal before returning to Starkville where he spent some time in the doghouse in the spring, wearing a No. 89 jersey and playing with the second team.
Since the start of camp, Cotton has been featured with the first team offense in the media portions of camp and has his old number back.
Other number changes include transfer Carterrious Brown who wore No. 3 in the spring but is now in No. 14, McWhorter's old number.

quite a few toss up games so could go either way. first prediction, going sole off overalls, had us going 4-8. i factored in last year's record more and ended up with 5.5
