Huskies off-load Sherman, Guice, Sims and Taylor as they make push for future

The Toronto Huskies have traded running back Derrius Guice and wide receiver Steven Sims to the Baltimore Ravens for a 2022 first-round pick. Within minutes, they also traded safety Richard Sherman and wide receiver Trent Taylor to the New York Giants for another 2022 first-round pick.

According to a source, Sherman met with Huskies owner Anthony Porter back in October after the team's win less start and asked to be traded. When GM Louis Riddick was able to secure a deal in principle with the Giants, a team which Sherman approved, the team hurried up and got the deal before the influx of trades during next week's trading deadline.

The Huskies were prepared to move on from Guice this offseason after his rookie contract ran through but with the Ravens losing running back Mark Ingram II, the market for a running back expanded as the Kansas City Chiefs and the Ravens became interested in his services.

The Huskies are high on safety Troy Apke, who they have deployed as a fifth defensive back in their nickel sets when Chidobe Awuzie was out and have since kept him in the rotation at nickel. The team initially signed Sherman with the purpose of competing for a playoff spot but after a slow start, they will likely need to finish the season on a 7-2 run in order to make the playoffs. They also weren't keen on re-signing Sherman past this season.

The team also traded a fifth round pick in the 2022 NFL draft for San Francisco's Jalen Hurd. The team also signed linebackers Malik Jefferson and Khalil Brooks and receiver Kendrick Rogers to bring their roster total back to 53.

Sherman is expected to play this week as the Giants play the Huskies.

Payne receives four-year extension during Huskies bye week

The Toronto Huskies have re-signed defensive tackle Da'Ron Payne to a four year, $32 million extension to keep their highly touted defensive line intact.

Payne, 24, was in the last year of his rookie deal and has been productive since being drafted in the first round back in 2018. The deal jumps his cap hit from $4.59 in 2021 to $7.35 in 2022 and continues to escalate until it peaks at $8.72 million in 2025.

The Huskies now have defensive Jonathan Allen signed through 2023, defensive tackle Ioannidis and defensive end Montez Sweat signed through 2022 and Payne signed through 2025.
