]With Lawrence and Young as cornerstones, Huskies ready to build a dynasty
Sebastian Barnes -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer
The Cleveland Browns spent most of last decade and the decade before that losing. The Cincinnati Bengals were the face of mediocrity in the NFL. They are the last two Super Bowl champions and provided a clear blueprint. They found their quarterbacks in Baker Mayfield and Joe Burrow and promptly won championships.
The Toronto Huskies found their quarterback in Trevor Lawrence. Now, it's time to start winning the championships.
The Huskies begin the off-season with $53 million in cap space and three first-round picks. They also have only one starter on an expiring deal in linebacker Shaun Dion Hamilton, who they wasted no time in finding a potential replacement in third-round pick Nolan Garrison and his five sacks. Even if Hamilton was still signed through 2021, there's a good chance that Garrison would replace and form a very formidable linebacker corps of Cole Holcomb, who led the league in tackles two seasons ago, and Reuben Foster, who finished second in DPOY voting this season.
The defense took a step back this season and Toronto will look to keep their front seven in tact while bolstering the back four. Chidobe Awuzie looks like a good signing but better suited as a CB2 while Sidney Jones IV is a nickel corner that was forced to play CB1 at times last season. Toronto needs another corner so they can push Jones to nickel and Lavert Hill to dime corner while also giving Keanu Neal a legit partner at the safety level. Troy Apke is a nice project and a good player but was suspect in defense last year.
Toronto simply cannot return the same defense that ranked 32nd in total defense, 32nd in pass defense, 26th in rushing defense and 32nd in scoring defense. They need an elite corner if one is available but that doesn't seem to be case. An aging Chris Harris Jr. might be the best option available and he's 33. At safety, it's similar slim pickings among aging veterans such as Devin McCourty (35) and Kareem Jackson (34).
On offense, the offensive line is the major position of need despite the team drafting three offensive linemen in the last two drafts that started this season. Josh Myers desperately needs to be kicked inside, Calvin Throckmorton looks like a C-minus player with guard Netane Muti looking like the potential only solid starter out of the three.
A lack of a running game hurt the offense and Lawrence as the weather worsened and so did the offense. The business model in Toronto seems to be to go cheap at running back and that could work next season, if the offensive line is fixed.
The receivers were a bright spot although there seems to be a need for a fourth guy, preferably a taller option. Jalen Hurd was a wash with his questionable hands and Kendrick Rogers lacks the ability to get open. The team does like Hurd's measurables and it would not surprise me one bit if the former star running backs make a return to the position. He wow'd executives and scouts throughout practices when he did get the ball.
