In a battle between AFC West bottom dwellers, the Chargers will look to add to the Broncos winless resume. The Broncos feature a good defense and a versatile quarterback in D'Eriq King who could pose some problems if he's able to get out on the edge and extend plays.

The Chargers defense played better last week but there are still plenty of questions in the secondary especially with Derwin James out. This should be a favorable matchup for the Chargers as outside of Courtland Sutton and veteran Brandin Cooks, the Broncos offense doesn't have much firepower. Starting tight end Mike Selvie is out, giving second-year Kyle Blakley the start and he has two career receptions.

The Broncos are also without their top running back in Derrius Guice and their starting left tackle. If Los Angeles can limit the running game early and force the Broncos into drop back situations, the Chargers defensive line should be primed to pin their ears back and get after it.

Sams Benched as King, Broncos Earn First Win of the Season
After a half of football where Hal Sams threw two interceptions and for the sixth straight quarter failed to get into the endzone, Brian Flores decided to make a switch at quarterback.

The replacement, rookie Rashaud Wheaton, would end the two of his first three drives with fumbles as the Denver Broncos erased the zero from their record, earning their first win on Sunday with a 31-16 victory over the Chargers.

Wheaton eventually got things going, throwing a touchdown while rushing for 83 yards to give the Chargers offense some life. With Sams, they struggled as he only threw for 90 yards while D'Eriq King on the other hand was as efficient as he could be.

He finished the game with 235 yards passing on 70 percent completion with three touchdowns and a lone interception to Malik Truman on an in-route to Courtland Sutton. He did all that while getting sacked seven times and was without his top two running backs following an injury to Julius Stimson after entering the game with Derrius Guice already out.

Behind the Numbers: Breakdown of Chargers Week Five Loss vs. Denver Broncos
The Chargers offense was able to move the ball a bit better in the second half when Hal Sams was replaced by rookie quarterback Rashaud Wheaton.

With the team heading into a bye week, the stage appears to be set for a passing of the guard with Wheaton having an extra week to review the tape from this week's loss to Denver as they get ready for Indianapolis.

Despite this, Chargers head coach Brian Flores declined to comment on who the starting quarterback will be coming out of the bye.

Chargers Make Most of Vikings Injuries at QB, Trade Sams to Minnesota For 2nd Round Pic
The Los Angeles Chargers have traded quarterback Hal Sams and a third round pick to the Minnesota Vikings for their second round pick.

Sams was effectively benched at halftime of last Sunday's loss to the Denver Broncos after having back to back two-interception games where the offense failed to read the endzone. In the first five games of the season, Sams had thrown more interceptions, 11, than he did all of his last two seasons combined.

For Minnesota, it's a worthwhile gamble to try to save their season after losing both Mitchell Trubisky and Shea Patterson out with injuries as the Vikings sit at 2-2 with a chance to compete for yet another divisional crown. Sams has two more seasons left on his very favorable contract as his cap hit never goes about $2.85 million. Sams posted similar numbers last season -- 26 TD, 9 INT, 213.6 yards per game, 94.9 rating -- as Trubisky who had 25 touchdowns, 6 interceptions, 217.4 yards per game and a 100.5 rating.

The Chargers have signed quarterback Kris Buchanan to be Rashaud Wheaton's backup, a former undrafted free agent in 2022 with one career pass attempt.

Rashaud Wheaton will make his first career start and outside of being in the friendly confines of a home stadium and having an extra week to prepare, the cards are not stacked in his favor.

The Indianapolis Colts are a good football team, led by an experienced quarterback in Sam Ehlinger would could get the Colts out to an early lead and force the Chargers to rely on their rookie quarterback.

On the other side waiting for Wheaton is Arik Armstead off the edge with Darius Leonard and Darron Lee being willing and efficient pass rushers from the linebacker position. A hobbled secondary with two of it's top three corners out, however, do present some windows of opportunities for Wheaton and the Chargers offense.
