Chargers Invite 12 to Training Camp
The Los Angeles Chargers have signed 12 additional players in preparation for training camp.

The Chargers did not fill the roster up to their traditional 75-man preseason roster due to a lack of cap space. The team only had around $4 million in cap space, using a chunk of it to sign QB Russell Wilson on a one-year, $1 million deal to presumably be the backup QB.

2028 Los Angeles Chargers Preview: Castonzo looking to take next step as QB
Will Castonzo spent last season simply trying to stay afloat as he was sacked seventy times, had to deal with injuries of his own as well as those of key players all while adjusting to life as a starting quarterback all in his rookie season. With a year under his belt, Castonzo is looking to go from a game manager to a superstar.

The transition is one that his backup QB, Russell Wilson, had to go through as well on his way to an Hall of Fame career.

"I try my best to pick up brain," says Castonzo of his relationship with Wilson, "The big thing has been just understanding what you're seeing pre-snap and knowing the plays to make and more importantly, not make."

Expected starter: Castonzo with Wilson as his backup.

Preseason storyline: Calloway will get plenty of opportunities to earn a roster spot as Castonzo figures to have a light load during the preseason and Wilson might get a few veteran days. He has a long way to go to crack that two-deep but can he make enough of a case to force the team to carry three quarterbacks?

2028 Los Angeles Chargers Preview: Will injury bug finally elude Whittaker?
When he's been on the field the last two seasons, Felix Whittaker has averaged nearly eighty yards per game with a scary 5.5 yards per carry and seven touchdowns. He fixed his fumbling issues of 2026 with zero fumbles in 2027. The only problem? Whittaker has missed 23 games in three seasons, a clip that is simply too high for a second round pick that is looking to cash in on his first re-up.

The team gave Clinton McDonald a size-able extension and Tyron Floyd has been good when given carries, averaging nearly five yards per carry himself as a fifth round pick. The front office and coaching staff has shown that they can find value and talent at the position both in the later rounds of the draft and in free agency. Can Whittaker separate himself from the value bin additions by simply staying healthy?

Expected starter: Whittaker with a dose of Henry and McDonald in certain situations, passing downs for McDonald and short yardage for Henry.

Preseason storyline: The team went out of their way to keep McDonald in L.A., a career journeyman. He's 27 so it's not a ton of untapped talent there but they saw enough to bring him back. Will he still just be a special teams ace or something more with that new contract?

2028 Los Angeles Chargers Preview: Brown and Metcalf provide scary 1-2 for the Chargers
When D.K. Metcalf was either injured or simply blanketed by the defense, the Chargers offense looked putrid. Amon-Ra St. Brown and Justin Jefferson took a few step backs last season and the need for a legitimate #2 receiver was clear.

The Chargers went out and paid the price for get A.J. Brown, giving up two first round picks and a second for the 31-year old receiver. While many will debate about the price tag, it's clear through the team's initial practices that he's a big upgrade from St. Brown and Jefferson.

There's also the Odell Beckham Jr. addition which isn't a guaranteed fit with guys like Deion Daniel and Jaron Medlock who are ten years younger and have shown flashes.

Expected starters: We know outside it will be Metcalf and Brown. Daniel took a huge stepback in his third season, catching just ten passes last season after averaging 50.1 yards per game a year ago. He's a big play guy that can sometimes disappear while Medlock isn't a natural fit in the slot leaving Beckham Jr. as the team's most reliable option in the slot heading into the season.

2028 Los Angeles Chargers Preview: Will gamble on Willson, Burke pay off at tight end?
Chargers' GM Stephon White's eye for talent is reputed to be one of the best across the league, if not the best. With a 33-year old tight end in Hunter Henry playing on a franchise tag, he went out and made additions that left some scratching their heads.

He gave 25-year old tight end Stephen Burke, who's never caught more 23 passes in a season, over $7 million on a two-year deal. He then drafted a player in Don Willson who many thought was just too slow to even play the position at the next level. Does he know something we don't?

Expected starter: Last season, the team rotated at tight end with Eli Malecki being used as a blocking tight end while Harrison Bryant was used in the vertical passing game. Expect a similar balance this season with Henry leading the charge, Willson replacing Malecki and Burke replacing Bryant.

Preseason storyline: Can Willson be effective enough as a receiver to crack it in the league as a tight end? They already have a dynamic fullback in Harper and then drafted another one with the last pick. How do they all fit on this roster?

2028 Los Angeles Chargers Preview: Zeigler hopes to be the final piece for the offensive line
After replacing their entire starting offensive line last season outside of one player, the Chargers seemed poise to actually bring back the entire starting five this season for the first time in a while.

Instead, they traded one of their first round picks for arguably the best guard in football in Carolina's Stephen Zeigler. Where does that leave Jerron Bowman and Colton McKivitz?

McKivitz played at a very high level as a left tackle in 2026 before the switch to right tackle saw his demise and eventual benching. Bowman wasn't much better, albeit he was a rookie and adjusting as well as he went from playing left tackle in college to playing right guard in the pros. He started at right tackle in the playoffs and was okay at best. He'll now need to fend off McKivitz for that starting right tackle spot.

hopefully this group is better against press coverage, that was the main issue with Jefferson and St. Brown. If it was off coverage, they had a shot but against press man they were useless.
