Tigers Draft Auburn QB McWilliams in 15th Round Despite Pending College Enrollment
Jacob Trautwig -- Bless You Boys Staff Writer
Detroit’s final selection was their most surprising. Draft junkies quietly assumed that Brandon McWilliams Jr., a two way star for his Georgia high school, was going to wind up on campus when he name wasn’t called within the first few rounds.
In fact, McWilliams himself had said that he would be enrolling at Auburn University with plans to play for both their football and baseball team. Prior to signing his Letter of Intent, McWilliams was widely considered the top prep pitcher in the country.
The Tigers were evidently the only team who were willing to meet his asking price, but with that money, they’re adding a high-upside arm talent to their organization. With the ongoing global pandemic and potentially no minor league baseball this season, McWilliams' plans to be at Auburn this fall should go uninterrupted. Going forward, however, it'll be interesting to see if he's able to juggle both akin to Deion Sanders and Bo Jackson who were position players and not pitchers.

McWilliams already adding 'good weight', expects to redshirt in 2020
Mark Brooks -- College and Magnolia Staff Writer
With Bo Nix at the helm, Storm McWilliams knew when he signed with the Auburn Tigers that it'd likely be a while before he can expect to see the field and that's exactly how he wanted it.
"I only started 11, 12 games at quarterback," says McWilliams of his experience, "I don't expect to come in and just be given the spot right away. I'm really looking at this season like a redshirt year, just take everything in and focus on the process and visualize how I would prepare if I was going to play. I wanted the chance to learn the position some more, learn the offense and this is a good situation for me. I'm just eager to start getting to work and really see some progress."
The two-sport star had to wait longer than usual to start working out with the team due to NCAA restrictions during the COVID-19 outbreak and didn't step football on campus until August, having missed the summer workouts that typically help break the freshman in.
McWilliams still used those few months to change his body and according to him, he's already started to see results.
"I've been doing the workouts that the coaches have been having over Zoom. In high school, I never really got the chance to just focus on weight training and I've been able to add some good weight in just a few weeks and can feel my body changing already. It's definitely exciting," says McWilliams, who signed with the Detroit Tigers in July. NCAA rules permit McWilliams to be a pro in one sport, baseball, while still being a member of the football team. He will not be eligible to compete for the Auburn baseball team.
McWilliams says he's up over 190 pounds and feels stronger. He hasn't had the chance to throw with one of the receivers but now that he's on campus and fall camp is on the horizon, he's looking forward to it.

Malzahn to return at Auburn as HC despite seven win season
Auburn couldn't have gotten off to a worse start, dropping games to Southern Miss, Mississippi State, LSU and South Carolina to begin their season.
Bo Nix wasn't playing well, the offense was struggling and Guz Malzahn appeared to be on the way out. Auburn was able to rally, however, and finished the season with a bowl win over UCF. From a high level, the season was a failure but the fact that the team didn't quit and managed to be bowl eligible likely saved Malzahn's job.
Malzahn will return in 2021 as head coach of the Auburn Tigers as will offensive coordinator Chad Morris who received a three-year extension. With Nick Saban retiring, if there ever was a time to make a play for the throne, it's now.
Morris appeared to have fix Nix's woes towards the end of the season and running back Tank Bigsby was a 1,000 yard rusher in the season as a true freshman. The future of Auburn football isn't as bleak as it appeared to be back in October.

Former Auburn quarterback Cord Sandberg transferring to FCS school
Tom Green -- AL.com Writer
Former Auburn quarterback Cord Sandberg will finish his college career at the FCS level.
Sandberg, who last month entered the transfer portal, announced Thursday he will be transferring to Eastern Kentucky.
“Excited and grateful for the opportunity,” Sandberg tweeted.
The 26-year-old former minor league baseball player spent the last three seasons as a reserve quarterback for Auburn, joining the program in 2018 after a five-year career in the Philadelphia Phillies’ farm system. At Auburn, Sandberg appeared in just four games over the last three seasons and completed 7-of-9 pass attempts for 114 yards and a pair of touchdowns -- both of them coming in 2019 against Samford -- while adding another 70 rushing yards on 10 carries.
Sandberg's exodus is a notable one with quarterback Storm McWilliams Jr. expected to spend the summer with the Detroit Tigers minor league affiliate in Erie. With the Tigers not being able to land a QB in the 2021 recruiting class, they are left with just two scholarship quarterbacks on the roster for spring practices and summer workouts.
McWilliams is expected to rejoin the team for fall camp.

Successful AAA stint could lead to future call-up for McWilliams
With the first overall pick in the 15th round of the 2020 MLB Draft, the Detroit Tigers selected a player that many thought might never sign with the team.
Brandon 'Storm' McWilliams Jr. was one of the highlights of the Toledo Hens first half of the MiLB season with a 2.92 ERA through ten games. Like any prospect, McWilliams had his up and downs but he bursted onto the scene with a fourteen strikeout performance in his debut. The even more impressive part was the fact that McWilliams hadn't been with the team until the start of spring training and did not play any competitive baseball at all since his high school junior season.
McWilliams will be returning to Auburn University in June for summer workouts with the football team where he is a backup quarterback. McWilliams' performance in just ten games warrants the team to potentially having a serious conversation about his future. He's no longer just a novelty or an intriguing prospect but could be a key cog in their farm system and beyond.
