Got My Mojo Working - The Journey of Morgan Sauce (2K20 MyCareer)

Time to Reload
I was brought out of my sleep by the sound of my phone vibrating on the coffee table. It had been almost two months since we had gotten swept by the Lakers in the second round of the playoffs and about two weeks since the NBA Finals had ended. I flew back home after the Finals once I saw the Lakers had been swept by the Sixers. Figured it was easier to be in Los Angeles that way. I was staying with my cousin Jerome at his apartment in Leimert Park.
I had fallen asleep watching season 2 of Ozark. I looked over at the device and saw that it was our General Manager, Trajan Langdon, calling. I thought it was odd that he was calling, especially this early and considering we’ve only spoken a handful of times this season. I usually just talk to coach or Swin.
“Hello?”
“Morgan, how you doing? It’s Trajan.”
“I’m doing fine, sir. Good morning. How are you?”
“Doing well. Have you made it back to the city yet?”
“No, sir. I’m still in LA. What can I do for you?”
“I’ll be in Los Angeles next week. Can you meet me at the Beverly Hilton on Monday at ten? I’d like to speak with you face to face.”
“Um, yeah, I’ll see you next week.”
I looked at the calendar and noticed free agency was right around the corner. I smiled to myself, hoping this meeting was going to be a good one.
At 9:45 on Monday morning, Jerome drops me off in front of the hotel. I have on a pair of black Nike shorts, an I Can’t Breathe sleeveless hoodie, and a pair of Gucci aviator sunglasses. I make my way to the front desk and I tell them who I’m looking for. The concierge leads me to a conference room.
I see Trajan sitting at a table with some folders and there’s another table in the corner with juice, coffee, fruit, and pastries.
“Right on time. Good to see you, Morgan. You hungry?”
I nod and grab two cinnamon rolls and some milk before taking a seat across from him.
“So, what’s this all about?”
“We’re waiting for one more person.”
At 9:58 on the dot, my agent walks through the door.
“Mo to the Jo! What’s up, my guy?”
I stand up and give him a one armed hug. “I’m good, Ty. I didn’t know you were in town.”
“Fresh off the plane, brother. Cabo was great, but this was big. I had to be here in the flesh for this one.”
Trajan pulled some papers from a folder on his desk. “I know we can’t officially talk about this until tomorrow, but I just want you to know that we were impressed with you. You came in and gave this organization everything you had. Your numbers were great, you made the All-Rookie first team and the All-Defensive second team.”
“Thanks, man. Ball is my life. The Pelicans took a chance on me when a lot of other teams were afraid to, so I had to give y’all everything.”
“That’s why we want to offer you this.” He slid over the papers. It was a contract.
“Are you serious?”
Tyler nudged me. “Of course, they’re serious. You’re a serious baller. You deserve a serious contract. This is very serious.”
The Pelicans were offering me a 4-year deal worth over $100M dollars. I couldn’t believe it.
“This is serious. And we’re serious about you. You are part of the future of New Orleans. You’re a leader and these younger guys look up to you. So, what do you say?”
“I say, somebody hand me a pen!”
After everything was signed and Tyler used his phone to scan a copy of the documents to himself, there was a knock on the door.
“He sign it?” Brandon Ingram said sticking his head in.
“The ink is still wet,” Trajan said smiling. “Come on in, Brandon.”
“I didn’t know you were in town, B.I.”
“Special trip. We got a lot to talk about.” He walked over to the table and grabbed a banana and some orange juice.
Tyler stood up from his seat. “That is my cue. I will leave you gentlemen to chat. Congratulations, kid. Don’t forget we got that meeting with Nike on Wednesday and Beats Thursday.”
After Tyler left, Brandon took his seat at the table.
“Let’s get down to business. Free agency starts in two days. You guys, along with Zion know this squad better than anybody. I want your opinion on who we should target. I know y’all have been reaching out to people since the season ended. Who are some of your favorites? I have Zion’s list. But tell me who you’re top three are and we’ll go from there.”
He slid paper and a pen to both of us. We looked at each other and shrugged before we started writing. Once we handed it back, Trajan looked over everything and typed some notes into his phone. “There’s one name on all three of these lists. And I just wanna say I like where y’all heads are at. It may take some convincing, but I promise I will try to make this happen. Enjoy your summer. Try to stay out of trouble. I will see you both in September.”
We watched as he walked out of the room.
“So, who did you put on the list?”
“Boogie, Denzel Valentine, and Willie Cauley-Stein.”
“Why’d you pick a forward, man?”
“I’m trying to get you some help off the bench. Who’d you pick?”
“Rondo, Boogie and Dragic.”
“You picked two point guards though.”
“I’m just trying to help. And you mostly play the two anyway. Figured, you’d need another Jrue out there. Veteran leader to feed you the ball.”
“Wonder who Zion went with?”
“Gotta be Boogie for sure.”
“Yeah, we definitely gotta get some guys to bang in the post.”
“Facts. What are your plans for the rest of summer, MoJo?”
“I’m gonna enjoy this Cali weather and see what kind of signings we get.”
After Brandon and I parted ways, I had a phone call that I needed to make.
“So, I think I can afford my own private chef now.”
“Oh, yeah,” my dad laughed into the phone. “So, the meeting was good?”
“Meeting was great. You and Mama need to pick out a place to live so we can iron out the details.”
