NDSU WR Cody Cannon declares for NFL Draft

FARGO, N.D. – After three seasons, two championships and a collection of school records Cody Cannon is moving on.

"These three years have been incredible." Cannon said. "I've gotten so much out of my time here. The coaches, all my teammates, the community, my classmates and professors. It's been amazing."

Cannon has contributed since day one, appearing in eight games as a freshman and scoring five touchdowns combined on offense and special teams. As a sophomore in 2017 he caught 43 passes for 679 yards and seven touchdowns.

This past season, with his older brother Cade at QB, Cody set a number of school records, catching 83 passes for 1,600 yards and 24 touchdowns.

"This past season was unbelievable, getting to play with Cade again, having so much success, winning the championship. We've been playing out that scenario since we were kids."

Cade is expected to be drafted as well after putting up incredible numbers in his lone season at NDSU.

Things have been great for Cannon off the field as well. He earned his degree in health and physical education, finishing with a 4.0 GPA and twice earning recognition as an Academic All-American.

Cannon and his longtime girlfriend also announced their engagement in December.

Cannon thanked his parents, Cade, his fiance, the coaching staff, teammates, fans, professors and the community in an Instagram post.

Cannon, who was part of a championship team at Bismarck High and two while at NDSU, hopes to have the chance to win "at least one" in the NFL.

Cannon hopes to participate in the NFL combine at the end of next month and will also take part in NDSU's pro day in late March. The 2019 NFL Draft takes place in late April.

"Who knows," Cannon added. "Maybe Cade and I get that Lombardi together."

The Curious Case of Cade Cannon

It was in late October of 2015 when Cade Cannon suffered an ulnar injury to his right arm in a loss against Northwestern. The injury affected Cannon's ability to feel, grip and throw a football. Around the same time then head coach Jerry Kill retired from coaching the Gophers mid season due to health concerns after repeated epileptic seizures. Defensive coordinator Tracy Claeys took over for the remainder of the 2015 season and was named head coach before the 2016 season.

Cannon, a Heisman candidate before the injury, never threw another pass for Minnesota.

Less than a year later, after trying to transition to receiver for three games, Cannon left the football program and joined the Tampa Bay Rays, who had drafted him a few years earlier. Ability wasn't the issue for Cannon, who piled up 486 all purpose yards with four touchdowns in the three games. Cannon's draft stock as a receiver was already climbing.

“At that time, in that situation I just wasn't into it.” Cannon told me. “It just wasn't where I wanted to be in that moment. There were a number of changes happening all at once with teammates and coaching staff and some controversies that I felt like I needed to get some distance from. I've always loved baseball and football equally and I had a great opportunity to pursue baseball at that time and kind of clear my head and reset or whatever you want to call it. I really felt like that was more in line with what I wanted to do at that particular moment.”

Cannon had a strong showing with the Scottsdale Scorpions in the Arizona Fall League, stealing 13 bases in 17 games and showing strong fielding ability and a live arm. The showing was enough to earn Cannon an invite to spring training with the Rays in early 2017.

Ultimately, Cannon struggled at the plate and landed with the team's high A club in Bowling Green where he progressed at the plate and was moved up to AA Montgomery in June where he stole 32 bases in 44 games.

Once the baseball season was over Cannon was spotted at several North Dakota State football games where his younger brother Cody had signed on to play receiver. In early January of 2018 he was on hand to see NDSU win their sixth FCS championship in seven years.

A couple months later Cannon announced he would be joining the NDSU football team to play out his final year of eligibility with the Bison.

“I just couldn't pass it up.” Cannon explained, clearly excited. “The atmosphere around the program, the talent, the coaching, getting the chance to play with Cody. All that together got me more fired up about football than I could remember being in a while. Tampa Bay gave me their blessing and I talked to a ton of people.”

Cannon said he talked with Cody as well as former NDSU QB Easton Stick and Chris Streveler who had played QB at South Dakota after having battled with Cannon for QB reps at Minnesota. He also spoke with former NFL QB turned baseball player Tim Tebow, who he played baseball with during the 2016 Arizona Fall League.

“All of those guys I was fortunate enough to have conversations with were an incredible resource.”

Cannon's season at NDSU was the stuff of a cheesy Hollywood sports movie, an undefeated championship season, a pile of school records, winning the Walter Payton award (essentially the FCS Heisman), tossing a school-record 24 TDs to Cody and becoming a top 5 QB on most draft pundits boards (including mine).

Cody declared for the draft and is expected to be a 2nd to 4th round pick.

Just as the hype around Cade being a first round pick was reaching a fever pitch he doused the flames. First withdrawing from the Senior Bowl then announcing he would be reporting to spring training with the Pirates, who traded for him in July of 2018.

So, what makes a championship winning, record breaking, sure first round QB pass that all up for a baseball career that may never develop into anything more than a solid minor leaguer?

“A lot of it is personal.” Cannon explained. “Stuff I want to keep to myself. So much of who we are is public now and I just want to keep some of that stuff for me. But part of it is injuries. Part of it is just what feels right to me right now. I like the opportunity that the Pirates have for me and I just love baseball.”

I asked Cannon if he was completely closing the door on his football career.

“No. No. I wouldn't say that. Not now.”

Spring training starts in a few weeks. The Pirates home for the spring is LECOM Park in Bradenton, Florida.

The NFL Combine kicks off on February 26th and the Draft begins on April 25th.
